spoilers
I just started Chapter 4 (hiding in the luggage area and crashing out).
So far, I think I'm following along with the story - but seriously. What's with the shadow stuff? Was it explained somewhere that I missed, or is it supposed to be unknown until some point....

What's with the shadow stuff?you mean hiding? i have one big surprise for ya - the indicator you see when pressing T has nothing to do about your stealth or visibility or whatever. it just shows if it's dark or not. if you want to pass thru discreetly, u must have a stealth suit (that includes NV) back from market station, or at least pickup some NV-goggles behind your starting point. there's also sneaky achievement if u manage to not kill anybody (i got it, but that was hard even with stealth suit, silenced gun equipped and even lights put out)

I played the whole game without paying attention to that indicator, it's pointless.
What story, by the way? Did I miss anything? This game has no story...

Obvious troll, do not listen. Green on the indicator means you won't be seen period, yellow means they won't see you until somewhat close, and red means they'll see you from a long ways away.

++++1. "The game has NO STORY ???? Being that Metro 2033 is somewhat like STALKER , you MUST follow the storyline , and listen carefully to what is said to you by your comrade (whoever that may be) - especially when you go to some sort of "market". As this is exactly where you will be requiring specific weapons / tools / equipment etc. And you must collect them , or buy them only , because you will be needing them in the coming level / chapter.
I will admit , that these THQ games go a bit overboard with how they construct the levels , but most games MUST be followed to a certain extent.
One of the things (I am yet to see , as I have only begun playing) , is some sort of sniper rifle (from the very beginning) , which would shoot darts / arrows etc. at the onslaught of nasty monsters from above , beside , from cover etc. When you are attacked by numerous monsters , you can only find cover to fight them all. And I remember thinking when I realized this : that it would be soooo good , if parts of these monsters were to break off (as damage) , while they still proceed to attack. No body parts come off of them , which would be exciting to see , while a arrow or dart is in the arm / leg / head etc. and yet the thing hobbles towards your position [bleeding]. That would add an entirely new dimension to any game. IE : a monster attacking you with only 1 claw , or 1 eyeball (with the dart stuck in the other eye). In other words , the monsters or enemy should have health characteristics , and an opportunity for the player to form a strategy of how to best defend him/herself.

If by shadow stuff, you mean the dark ones then yes it was explained...in the very beginning. there basically a super enemy that attacked your home station and they can cause you to have visions that effect you in real life.

But if it's dark or not determines whether you're seen or not for most of the humans. Even if it's not strictly a visibility meter, it's basically telling you how visible the area you are in is by how light or dark it is. Notice I described it as how likely you are to be seen under the different ratings.
It doesn't make any difference to new players whether it's a light meter or visibility meter since this game treats them roughly the same and the stealth armor only changes how quiet you are and not how visible you are.

It's moot because I wasn't asking about the stealth mechanics.
