Just a heads up, Just installed the new patch and it deleted all of my game saves. Pretty much done with the game now, lost all that time I put into it.

You can find a lot more people having problems with this patch at the official forums. http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/4611096804

Oh well Batman: AC till BF3 is out.

This is pretty common for games, surely not the first game to have this issue. Not a fan of the game but this seems like a rather minor thing. If they recoded aspects of items or ai it would make sense that the old save games aren't going to work properly.

I downloaded the patch this afternoon and haven't had a single issue accessing my saves. they're all there and they're all working fine. Perhaps there's something other than the patch going on that's preventing you from seeing your saves.

This is pretty common for games...

I disagree completely.

I would say this is pretty common for *poorly designed* games.

I haven't had this problem (I would consider it a bug) for quite awhile... since Eufloria I think.

Here's a few games off the top of my head:
Deus Ex - No problem.
Dawn of War 2 games - No problem.
Civilization V - No problem.
Warhammer Space Marine - No problem.
Borderlands, Defense Grid, Fallout 3, Witcher 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Torchlight.... no problems with deleting my progress.

I love your statement about poorly designed because that's all I have to say about Dead Island...and nearly every patch for that game makes all your previous saves incompatible...I stopped bothering with it after I had to restart the 3rd time...

Can anyone please help/advise?

Yesterday when i started steam wanting to play Heroes VI, it started downloading a whooping patch of almost 6gb. I read that a patch had been released and didn't think too much of it.

Today i just started up steam, and it seems to be downloading the exact same patch! Do i have to DL 6 gigs everyday to play? Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks!

edit: my steam folder is not on C:, could this be the cause?

All saved games are gone, but progress was saved.

Not common in games. Good progammers even if they change the save format will make a function to read the old save, convert the data to the new format, and save it properly. All this transparently to you the end user, you just load your saves and it does all the necessary magic in the background silently.

All the games that lose compatibility with old saves are proof of incompetent developers, or cheap companies who cut corners and don't give developers enough time to do their job properly.

As a programmer myself I have to agree with this. Being told you have a week to do something that should rightly take a month is becoming the norm and if you're not 'on time' you're fired.

As much as I love Heroes 6 every time I report a bug on their official forums I have to cringe thinking about how something like that could have slipped by them....then I realize it probably didn't. They were probably told the release date couldn't be changed and were forced to do everything they could just to make the game as playable as possible and save small fixes for later. Stuff like the Imperial Griffins dealing no damage with their special ability or Ghosts/Liches not being able to attack Dark Elementals are things are should be quick and easy fixes, but were probably ignored so they could squeeze out fixes for crash to desktop type issues.

I didn't have a problem with the patch but I always backup my saved games if possible just in case. Especially after a long session of playing.

Just sayin'.

I experienced update problems in 4 of 5 of those games, and Deus Ex while didn't have *that* problem for me is far from being well coded. Hell the ESBseries was employed about 3 weeks after release that fixed the terrible stutter problems that many had, and that Eidos was unable to fix themselves. Due to poorly programmed shaders.

Every Bethesda game since Arena has had save game issues, bar none. Ever played Daggerfall? Really played it? There was a 3rd party tool to fix corrupted save games that occurred to 100% of the players. 100%. Daggerfall and Oblivion and using a bunch of mods? Good luck. Great games though, just have issues. Like most games.

It's a fact of computer gaming life since the Commodore 64. Anyone saying otherwise is living in denial or frankly not old enough to know the history. The games are still fun though.

I wonder when there going to give us a patch that changes the town view screen so you can actually feel like you accomplished something when you build buildings.

Seeing the amount of bugs in this game, I would say that is far from being their priority. At least it should not be.

Remember Fallout 1 and Fallout 2?

I recall issues like that with those two games.

It happens. Oh the wailing.

I've yet to decide if I want to risk money on this one.
So I'm watching from the sidelines drinking rum and Coke.

Uzi, even with all the bugs I'm loving the game. If you're a fan of the series it really is worth the investment. If you're not sure you have the cash to spare then give it a couple weeks. I'm sure they'll have most of this sorted out before the end of Oct.

It does seem pretty awesome, but waiting a month or 2 will probably give you a better experience.

Yeah, pretty common, except that it's actually rare.

Regarding your posts:
Deus Ex -> Single person, looks like an isolated case. Nobody else chimed in to say that this was a problem.

Civ V -> You definitely have a point, and are spot on here. I personally had not run into this, but when I start a game, I usually play through it in a few days.

Borderlands -> Also looks like an isolated case. Might have been due to the user modding. He says he didn't Willowtree in one post, then that he did in another post.

Fallout 3 -> Good point. Affected 360 users, however... please note that it was listed as a *BUG*.

Torchlight -> The game was incorrectly set into demo mode by Steam. When it went back to full mode, it sounds like the saves worked properly again.

I guess the point is this. A developer should not knowingly write a patch that breaks a save file. Maybe the Homm6 patch breaking saves was an isolated case to this player. I don't even own the game due to all the problems, and the DRM. However, of all the games you listed, only one of those (Civ V) seems to knowingly make a save game incompatible.

Granted, if the Homm6 patch doesn't destroy your entire progress, it is probably more forgivable. Losing 10s of hours is far worse than losing progress on a single map.
