Personally,
Beyond the call of duty is the one i liked the most, but it was only 6 missions (if I recall correctly)

Behind enemy lines is the first one (older, less options) but its a long and rewarding game.

Commandos 3 is a game I still regret buying. Short, easy and boring; a shame.

I'd say Commandos 2 is the best of the series. If these game's work properly on steam/modern computers, I don't know.

I have all of the games in the Commandos series, but have only finished Commandos 2: Men of Courage - I had Commandos 2 long before I picked up the collection. I did play a few minutes of the others, but never got around to finishing them. I will vouch for Commandos 2, though; it's one of the best games I've ever played and still one of my all-time favorites. It's hard as nails, but still a lot of fun. I've finished Commandos 2 several times and I'll probably do it again some time in the near future...if I'm still alive.

Behind Enemy Lines (1st Commando) is a blast.
There is not a problem with the options, you will find it a hard and encouraging game, trust me.
You can start from there, because it was an instant classic.

The second is amazing as well.

Commandos 3, I think it went down a bit, but I can't definitely say it because I didn't finish it. You got a lot of hours before you just with the first one (it has 20 missions), and for what it costs, I would get the pack, because Commandos 1 and 2 are a must have

P.D. Ah, and excuse me, but 'Beyond the Call of Duty' was an extra game with missions (8 in total), released between Commandos 1 and 2.

So that makes 3 good games.

Bought Commandos 2 and its great but holy crap is it hard

1. Don't make noise(ie. shoot, explode things before you absolutely have to), punch things rather than killing them.
2. Use Cigarettes/wine a lot. That covers about 90% of the enemies in game excluding some officers.

Am not very good player and never have been but yet I can make 5 star rankings in this game just by playing it "cool". After the first mission with only the thief, it gets easier.

I just got past first mission with only thief and it was damned hard
but game gets a lot more fun when you have other commandos :)
