The Commandos series came out back when I was a [broke] kid, so I'm not too familiar with it.

1) Do these games play nicely on modern systems (how's widescreen, high res, or W7 support?)

2) What's the actual gameplay like? Are they comparable to games like Jagged Alliance, CoH: Tales of Valor campaign mode, DoW2, etc? Is gameplay realtime or turn-based?

1: Seems to work fine. Running all the games without problems on Vista... Can't say anything about w7 but should work when it works on Vista? The first games doesn't have widescreen. The highest setting is 1024x768... But it fills out the whole screen anyway.

2: Commandos is in it's own genre. Nothing like CoH ToV. More like a real time Jagged Alliance... But still not the same xP
The only games out there like Commandos are that Robin Hood game and those cowboy games which is exactly the same gameplay but different setting.

Desperados. I think there were three games in the Desperado series. I have them somewhere. Maybe under my pillow.

It is like a puzzle game. There is a fixed map with fixed enemies, doing fixed patrols. And you have fixed units with fixed skills. You need to come up with a solution to achieve your objective. But I assure you there are more than one way to solve it.

And it is fun. Your men are outnumbered and surely would be killed in combat, you gotta come up with ideas to divide the enemy and hunt them down silently one by one or fool them to look other way while you were achieving your goals.

Desperados is more story-driven, Robin Hood has some resource management, Commondos is raw puzzle.
