I was setting up my first Raid 0...and I just could not get it to work
I went on forums, looked all over online, read books, talked to friends...no one could help me
turns out I had both hard drives set to slave
took me two weeks to find it

A long time ago, I had a new Athlon XP 1600. I was getting ready to put in in the slot, and put thermal paste on it. I was so excited that I didnt read the directions, and covered the entire cpu wafer.

Also with older computer
I wanted to change the resolution, set it one step up. My system crashed and monitor said "out the range" (yeah, it was made in china). I spent a month trying to reset the resolution without a monitor.
I finally got the bright idea to get another monitor and another graphics card.

And then "pasted the plate" to the back of my 150 dollar motherboard. But hey now she has character. Do i win!??! I soo could use a new power supply. or perhaps even a new motherboard......

lol, yah, but did u actually turn yours on, lucky for me i turned it on when there was nothing in there, otherwise, that woulda been bad, i just had to replace the mobo, which i got for free, cuz it was "faulty" from the factory, lol
Gentle

No, that wasn't "faulty from the factory" that was user error.
There is a difference.
User error = insurance
Defective from factory = warranty

I installed AOL.
Also, one of the people I work with was testing out a motherboard, and took an AMD processor and managed to cram it into a P4 slot on the board, turned on the computer, and the chip melted to the motherboard. And he didn't even realize he had the wrong processor in the wrong motherboard.

My computer use to shut off and restart randomly and I asked my friend what the problem was, and he told me my computer was over heating and I needed to put a fan in it.
So I went to the store and bought a compact black battery powered fan (one that you would take on a camping trip or something), and placed it inside my case.

when i was a n00b about pc building(back in 1998) i onc tried to hook up my new cd burner(lol it was soooo slow, like 8x speed tops) and the pc wouldnt boot. I called tech support, got a pc tech (now he is a moron, he does this for a living and he couldnt do it lmao), and then my at the time 12 year old son said to me, "Daddy, did u check the jumpers?" now at the time i had no idea what jumpers were so i was taught by a 12 year old.
Another time i broke a 120 gb hdd connecter on the back of it off by trying to connect the floppy ide cable to the back og it. to this day i am still angry about it and STILL only have a 20 gb, oh well at least i have a GeForce 6600 gt agp and a system that runs hl2 great.
I powered on a PC while clearing the CMOS. I literally had the manual, which stated in bold print "do not power on," in my hand. No harm done, otherwise I wouldn't find it so comical.

I had an old pentium 133MHz processor. Had some fun with that. Same with some old hard drives. I always wanted to see what the disk on the inside looked like. Wow, that was the shiniest thing ive ever seen.
The worst was probably when we had a really old crappy monitor. I took a baseball bat and started to smash in the monitor.
After a few swings the screen broke and sorta made this whoosh sound for a second and it sorta collapsed in wards and glass flew everywhere. It was cool. Then i shot it with my potato launcher, and my yard was covered in glass shards. Dumb as crap, i had to clean it all up my parents got pissed.

Then i was soldering a circuit board and accidently touched the metal piece that you do the soldering with. i was also putting in the vantec ram slot covers and when it didnt go in i ramed it in and heard a "crack" luckily it wasnt my mobo (almost crapped my pants lol) it was the 2 clips snapping into place.

I was poking around my comp while powered on to check how hot various things were. I got my finger caught on the CPU heatsink fan. It stopped and my comp beeped. No damage was done, except my finger was bleeding slightly.
I also forget to plug in the data cables to stuff like monitors and drives and wonder why they don't work  Once I forgot to plug in the CPU heatsink fan and turned on the computer. It started beeping but luckily no harm was done. That was on my old PIII.

Lol I have also done this but I actually lost the tip of my index finger.
I had just bought a new Delta Black Label fan (http://www.dragonpc.co.nz/p.aspx?1284) which spins at 5700rpm and it has very sharp fan blades.
Well I was like fu*k this blows a lot of air and then this bright idea hit me and I decided to see if to would hover so I stuck it on the top of my case and was quite dissapointed to see that it didnt hover. Then I went to put it back in the case without turning the power off (after all its only a fan what harm can it do?) well when I picked it up I put my finger into the fan blades and needless to say there was a lot of blood and a lot of pain.

I fried my cd r/rw burner at a LAN party.
how: one of the molex connectors on the power cable was getting uncomfortably close to my side panel fan so i decided to offset all the plugs one connector to get rid of the slack. i did this while it was on. when i was plugging in my cd burner, the plug went in wrong (the prongs on the drive were long enough to make contact) and voltage crossed where it shouldnt go. There was a big arc and my computer shut down. so when i tried using it it wouldnt work!

I bought new computer parts but no case, so i made a case out of old milk carton sides... got kinda stinky
i needed some thermal paste for my cpu, so i took some athletes foot cream and used that. I used a metal spatula, and soldered some nails to it to make a heatsink...
To watercool everything, i feeled up my bathtub, and threw all the puppypuppypuppypuppy in while plugged in, and got in with it.... how i survived is a different story
to make speakers, i took a thousand pairs of earphones and mini 2 way splitters and made a set of cheap weak speakers that sounded like crap.
to make the computer run, u have to fill the gas tank with 3 litres of methyl alcohol, and turn the big red nob 4 quarter turns, and get naked, sacrifice a small goat, and sing Kumbaya!
I managed to overclock the processor from 15 mhz to 9999999999999 gajilian trilahertz while ONLY causing a minor nuclear melt down in my home....
Summary of Specs:
Intel 386xs 15mhz

ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB PCI-Express... (WTF!?!?!)

I took one of my monitors up to the King County Fair Grounds (WA), along with my WSAR-10 Romanian AK-47, a few hundred rounds, and two 20 round mags. My my that was a fun day. i found that one shot with a 7.62x39 to a monitor causes like internal explosions. THICK glass shards shot all over and the case imploded. then we took the Interstate 12 gauage double barrel side by side to it. Now how many of you can say you have seen a monitor dissinegrate? I felt like watching office space after that.

A common mis-conception of turbo was that it sped up the computer.
This mis-conception came about because when you pushed the turbo button the turbo light came on giving you the impression that turbo was used to speed up your computer (essentially overclock it at a push of a button :D)
What it was actually used for was to slow down your proccessor. Go and download an old dos game like Mechwar (oh how I loved that game!!!) and try an play it. The game will run fine on an old 286 but it will run incredibly fast on a 386 so the put the turbo button on so that when games started to run to fast you could hit the button and underclock your cpu causing the games to slow down to a playable level.
NOTE: Other great dos games that I had on my first computer (a 286) were Leisure Suit Larry, Mechwar, Battletech The Cresent Hawks Inception, Battletech The Cresent Hawks Revenge, Sim City (The orignal version for pc) and Test Drive (you could drive off a cliff and all that would happen was that your windscreen would crack lol)

I have taken my pc case front off while my computer was still on.
I have removed pci slot covers and dropped screwes or the actual cover on the motherboard or videocard (luckily no shorts)
I was soldering a blue led in place of the original green led for my speakers. Inside the volume control thinggy I dripped a blob of hot solder onto a black microchip bridging 4 connections and was unable to remove it. (it still works fine)
I opened up my monitor to fix the power switch unaware of the dangers of the power coil. I found out later how close I was to shocking myself to death. (very lucky)
I have voided the warranty on EVERYTHING pc related except my monitor and hard drives
I use ducktape to splice wires together inside my case.

i bought new ram and a new video card, went to install the new ram after checking to make sure the video card worked, and dumped water/chew spit down the top of my case. i actually watched the bottle get closer and didnt even think about it falling. I felt like such a dumbass. Luckily everything worked after a good cleaning and CMOS reset.

My game server/ftp one day was working fine, i wanted to shut it down one night, so i did. The next morning i wokeup and was like oh i should turn it on now, so i did, and for some reason. BLEHM nothing showed up on the screen, i tried for around 5 months to get it working, many forums, tech's, i thought the Gfx card was fried. Well. I recently was fiddiling with it again, and i was using the same monitor as i was on it before. SO i was fiddiling with the monitor. and it comes to find out, I had the Brightness all the way down, and the contrast all the way up... So 6 months wasted because for some reason i turned the monitors settings wierd....
Oh, yeah washing my heatsink out with water because it was VERY dusty, then putting it back on without drying it or putting more artic on it... Luckily nothing fried. I think my computer is like Imune to water. I have spilt liquids in the inside of it at least a dozen times while it was on.
The Cool but stupid thing. I have one of those Turbonator fans (DONT BUY ONE) they are loud as hell, and spin SUPER FAST, but any ways i found a plastic army man, i stuck his head in the fan while it was at full speed, heh it was pretty funny, it didnt decapitate him but he looked like michael jackson almost.
Also, I tried to plug a fan into where a jumper would normally go.
Plugged the one of the powerleads into a 2nd harddrive, while the compputer was on... I was wondering why my 1st hd sounded like it was starting up... no damage done, luckily.

hehe, once when I was rather computer noob I downloaded a Hard Drive killer to nuke someones computer, somone that pissed me off. anyway I downloadd it and ran the .exe .. I closed it quickly thinking I dont think I should have done that. so I read the read me file and it said somthing like "Do Not execute on your own computer" I was like ???? I read a litte more on how it worked and how to use it .. it said it wipes all drives connnected to ur computer but drives in use like ur windows drive are wipped on windows restart,
I checked out my back up drive .. it was empty .. everything gone
and I might have had another drive connected .. cant remember now but my C was ok, I didnt want to restart since since it said it would wipe drives in use on windows restart so I called my m8, he or was rather skilled at computers so I figured he could help it turned out in the end this hardddrive killer had added some lines to my autoexec.bat and config.sys that run ok boot so he gave me directions to remove it. in the end I restarted and my system was fine :D except from the files I lost on my other drives
Nowaday I dont make them stupid mistakes anymore since I'm what people might called a computer Geek .. after all I spent over £1300 upgrading my computer.
I was cleaning the stock thermal paste off a CPU and spilt some of the TIM cleaner on the chip.. not good.

I was removing a hard drive (IDE) and had alot of trouble removing the ribbon cable. After trying pliers, and many other things I just pulled on the ribbon itself.
The insulator was pushed down, but the bare wires were still connected.
After I finally got it removed, I didn't have another cable, so I just taped that one and stuck it on my new drive.
Well, eventually the bare wires found their way to each other...

And this thread lives again.
Why wont it E-DIE?
Ok so another from me:
I was changing the way most of my fans in my case were facind and replacing the cpu fan.
I now have a l33t psu mod which only a pic would do justice to, and airflow that goes basically in reverse to a usual case. The psu fan was so sh*t that air was actually being sucked through the psu, against the fan in the psu, and into the computer, causing 60C idle temps.
Anyway I was inside the psu (Great way to void warrentee, and I kinda bridged the leads of a rather big capacitor with my little finger. Man did that hurt. I then droped the psu, and after recovering I put it all back together and it now works fine.

True story...
The parts to my FIRST cuztom made comp came in the mail and I was ready to get it together. It was a 2.4Ghz P4 and 512Mb RAM (this was about 3 years ago if I remember correctally)
Anyway, my current computer was 200Mhz and 130Mb RAM, so as you may have guessed I was pretty excited to set it up. If you a guy and your like me, you dont read instructions. So I screwed everything in (I took apart comps alot so I pretty much knew what I was doing). Turn out, theres something called spacers you need to put inbetween the mobo and the case. Well how was I supost to know that :p
anyway I fried the motherboard and had to get it replaced. :o

I decided I was going to "upgrade" my wife's perfectly functioning PC with a CPU I had just removed from my system.
This would be a nice cheap upgrade for her, and I wouldnt feel bad for spending a few $100 on upgrading my PC... a win, win situation.. or so I thought.
I checked and made sure her motherboard could support the processor and proceeded to replace her slower CPU with my faster one.
Once I had replaced the CPU, I booted the PC and it proceeded to crash over and over and over. It wouldnt make it to windows 9 out of 10 times.
After hours of screwing around with her PC I decided to replace the faster CPU with her original CPU.
Even with the original CPU installed, the PC would crash over and over.
After yet more hours of banging my head, I removed the motherboard and noticed ALL of the CAPs of a certain kind, were leaking. Some how I had fried the motherboard.
$650 later, after a new motherboard, CPU, ram .. blah blah blah.. my wife's PC was "upgraded".
Hardly the "cheap upgrade" I was planning.

I decided to build a new PC. I decided to build the PC in an old case then once it was fully functional I was going to move all the components to a new case.
Everything was going great. My PC was all assembled and working perfectly, so I decided to move the parts to the new case. I began taking out my brand new GeForce 4 TI 4400, I had a good grip on the card and pulled, the card was difficult so I repositioned my hand for a better grip and pulled harder....
... bang.. across the room goes a capacitor, I watch it bounce off a wall and fall to the floor... about the same time as my jaw.
Not to be undone, I grab my soldering iron and proceed to fix my video card.
I find that one of the legs on the cap is now gone. I end up having to hot gule the cap on the top of the card and run new leads to the board, more difficult than it sounds.
I placed the card into my new case fired it up and it worked great.
My only problem was that if my FPS ever hit 88 FPS, it would trigger my flux capacitor thus propelling it into time.
I was trying to remove my heatsink from my AMD Athlon 64 3400+, with all screws and "holders" off, but it just wouldnt, so i decided to give it afew good tugs.
I GOT IT OUT!
but with my CPU still attached to the bottom... (no the lever to hold the CPU in place was not released...)

i did somewhat the same thing except i had too much paste on my cpu so when i pulled off my heatsink along came the cpu out of the socket hence bending alot of pins! i used a 1 cent 5cm nail to fix a $220 3400+

LOL same here! And my recent incident you can find on the hardware fourm. It's "My Pentium reached 200F etc.."
My monitor got so hot one day, playing the newly-released Doom, I decided to cool it down by pouring water on it. I was 8. All was well for five seconds or so, then the screen went blank, then smoke started pouring out. Then the thing just imploded- Damn, it stank like a dead animal or something. Anyway, about two days later, for some reason, a TV that was on the other side of the room did the same thing- Except that it did it randomly :S

So i put it in with my base hands but i was told to touch ur hands on the power supply to ground urself, well the power supple was still on and it fried the card. My whole comp was messed up so i brought it to a repair shop.

I made a pretty dumb move a week or so ago, I was going to install a zalman vf700cu on my new x800xt, I thought I read the directions thoroughly.
So I proceeded to install the hsf thought everything was done right, went to turn it on and.....nothing.
I thought I had crushed the core from tightening the screws too tight, turns out though after returning the dead card I forgot to put the standoffs on the back of the card so the backplate was touching the back of the vid. card which fried it.
Finally when I did get it to boot it had tons of vertical lines. I guess thats what I get for trying to meddle with the computer when theres a cat and a baby fighting behind you and you're trying to mediate between them.
That core could hit 560 on atitool....the new one so far has maxed out @ 542 :(

Well I am not close to any of these but the only thing I can think of was caused by my drinking problem. I fried 2 mobos and sound cards back in the days when the speaker sockets on the SBlive didn't have plastic insulators around them. The first time I left the computer on and unplugged my speakers to plug in a headset and saw a spark when I hit the brass collar of the jack and the metal case...and was like this can't be good. Well it wasn't I lost sound that night and the mobo 2 days later...now if that wasn't dumb enough about 3 months later I was drunk and wanted to do the same thing...I thought about it and decided if I was careful I could pull it off....well I did the exact same thing....that was the year I went though 3 mobo's in 6 months.

Here goes:
On my newest system:
I built a nice new custom system for my wife and myself. everything was working well but it was a little loud and a little hot.
while fiddling with the fan setup, i unplugged them one at a time to find out which was loudest. i unplugged one of the fans, and dropped the power lead. the lead fell on to the bottom of the case and i saw a spark and my comp shutdown. i freaked out thinking i fried something. i made sure it couldnt happen again and started up. no damage. It did scare me so it thought:
"NOTE TO SELF, DO NOT DO THIS AGAIN"
a few days later, and what happens? i do the same thing abgain. and i think:
"NOTE TO SELF, DO NOT DO THIS AGAIN!"
so a few days later, and what happens? i do nearly the same thing, except no shutdown this time, just an arc. ARGH!!!!! so this time i think:
"STOP PULLING SH#T OUT OF THE PSU WHILE THE COMP HAS POWER!!!!"
also on this system, i have failed to plug in my video card into the molex twice. when you do that, the comp makes a loud beep. no damage, but i managed to do it twice.
and this is on my brand new system. this stuff is harmless, but still dumb. however, i should have learned my lesson on older systems by doing these things b/c they were a little more severe:
-unplugging the primary HD while the comp is ON. (arc at the power connector signified a fried HD).
-plugging in the primary HD while it is sitting on the bottom of the case. resultant frying of HD.
-pluggin in the 3.5" drive thinking "ill just keep it on this cardboard piece while i use it, no need to install." the cardboard piece slips out, 3.5 touches bottom of case, poof, no 3.5" drive.
-my PSU fan was getting loud so i put some bicycle chain oil on it. yeah, like that didn't attract dust, helped the problem for like a day, then it was louder than ever. i just kept oiling it until the comp was replaced. the inside was CAKED with oily dust. it looked seriously like the engine compartment in a car. it ran so hot that all (two) of the fans were always on full speed. good thing i never checked the temps.
and my roommate in college did this: i set up a proxy server to share a connection using a compaq 500mhz windows machine. the monitor would show the internet activity of any user but the monitor was always off. he comes out of his room, turns the monitor on to check the connection, then goes back into his room. me and my guests start seeing the list of porn sites he's visiting scroll down the wingate window.

Years ago I bought my first graphics card (ATI 7000 PCI - SWEET !!!) and after installing everything I couldn't see ANY difference at all in gaming, which was Tribes at the time. I was very dissapointed and almost returned the card. But a freind of mine who was building his own comps at the time came over to make sure I had installed everything properly before I returned it. It took him about 30 seconds to point out that I still had the monitor plugged into the onboard video. DOH!!!

TRush...
At this rate, all YOUR little pixies are going to be incapitorated due to heat buildup and lack of oxygen. This is precisely why one should run the system without the case cover on...to assure the pixies receive life-giving air!

When I had a Pentium II computer and was upgrading to a P3 with a new mobo, I was trying to remove the ATX power connector from the old MB. The case was very cramped and the connector was under the hard disk bays and hard to grab with my fingers. I ended up getting frustrated trying to finesse it out and yanked it out. The whole dongle connector from the mobo came out attached to the psu connector.
I didn't care because I wasn't going to use the mobo nemore but I wanted to sell it on ebay :\.
I think the worse thing I did though was when I had a very small case with very limited drive bays (it was a store bought PC) and when I went to install a harddrive I found out it needed slide rails and the PC company was going to ♥♥♥♥ me on price for them. Well I just set that HD on top of the cdrom drive in the other empty 5.25 bay because there was no empty 3.5 drive bay. But then I bought a third HD and there was no room for me to stack it so it basically hung from the power connector and rested against the bottom of the case vertically.
Oh yea, I also actually bought a tape drive instead of a CD burner. What a waste...

When I was around 9, I decided to take the computer apart while my parents were gone. While it was opened, I was thirsty so I got some fruit punch, and then I accidently spilled it all inside the computer. We had to buy a new one because the warranty was up :(
I wasnt allowed to use a computer for a very long time.

The worst was probably when we had a really old crappy monitor. I took a baseball bat and started to smash in the monitor.
After a few swings the screen broke and sorta made this whoosh sound for a second and it sorta collapsed in wards and glass flew everywhere. It was cool.
To you, and anyone who has experienced an implosion in your monitor, it's because your CRT has a vaccum inside it.
Anyway, I haven't had any major problems with computer building(I don't do it myself). Although I did once try to play the Half Life 2 Demo with my old PIII 450 and the same Riva TNT that I'm still using. I had to reset REALLY fast.

I remember the very first computer i had, an old packard bell it was a 386, didn't even have a math co processor. had only 1 ISA slot for a riser card(i don't think PCI was even close to being out yet, this was before windows 95) and the 14.4k modem was KINDA built in, it was a separate board, but had a ribbon. anyways, i tried to do something with it, while it was turned on, i took the screw off and it slipped form my hand and landed right on the on board VGA and fried it.
Another thing i tried doing an upgrade for a cpu.. and i tried taking the fan clip off with a phillips head screwdriver from the top part (yanno trying to push down so it would unhook easily?) its for Socket A CPUs.. so yeah,.. anyways, i at one point pushed the screwdriver too hard and it slide down off the fan clip and gouged the motherboard up nice.
The best thing to do is to try to install a stage 1 gentoo linux install (for those of you that don't know, gentoo is a linux flavor where you compile the whole system. on a dual xeon 2.8GHz it could take you a couple hours to install including the desktop part of it) on an old AMD p75 (socket 7 i think?) took 3 months to install.(not including the desktop part)

i think the dumbest thing i ever did was forget to put arctic silver on an AMD Tbird 1.4 GHz. The fan went on fine but it fried after 10 minutes which was halfway through the Windows install. Luckily it could be RMA'd so was an easy fix.

erm, duh? Not being rude at all, but the E7525 chipset which ties xeons to PCI-E isnt exactly aimed at the gamer market. If you're rendering 3D models in maya etc, ur rig rocks. Gaming, you spent way more than you could have done if you'd bought a decent 925XE board and a P4 5 or 6 series chip. Not Intels fault you bought the wrong gear mate. I've got a twin xeon 2.8Ghz machine here which is used for rendering and its insanely fast at just that, but throw far cry at it and forget it lol.
Second point is, ur not running SLI on that board either, so ur score is what you'd get with one card. The only platform that supports SLI for intel is the NForce4 Intel edition, which supports socket 775, not the xeon sockets. Your effectively just running a second card, albeit an expensive one.
Just my 2 cents, blame not the manufacturer....

i got 2 stories.
I was pretty noob at building comps. But i could still do it. Anyway an old amd k6 was going bad so i took out mobo and put in a new cpu. while it was out i decided to work with it while the pc was on. I think i was changing jumpers and putting my hands inside the case was a hassle. I put it on a foam rubber thing on top of the case... put the power supply in and turned it on. It was fine for a while until it slid off the rubber foam and touched the metal case on the bottom of the mobo. Needless to say after about half a second smoke started pouring out of the last PCI slot and filled the house. My head was spinning and i opened the door. Oh, and there were about 5 other people in the same room as me, that was NOT fun at all lol. I'm not that dumb anymore :p
next; (this was in school) my friends and i had a few hard drives go bad so we decided to play with them. We opened one hdd case and plugged the hdd in and let it spin up. After about a second of that we find this nail on the ground. And we are like "Hey lets grind the hd with the nail!" So we stick on there and let it grind. Well after about a half a min or so the nail touches the end the spinning disk and it gets thrown across the room and hits a girl in the head. She screams and we just bust out laughing. She was so pissed lmao.

i tried taking out my cpu to put on some thermal paste adn well...
it was an athlon XP2000 and any one thats got one or similar will know the clip to get it out is darn hard to unclip,, so with a flat headed screw driver pushing down pretty hard, it slipped and scraped the motherboard..
so i was thinking,, ok ill put it back together adn it will be ok.
bah,, wat a mess, it would boot to windows then shut off, and sometimes not even get passed the POST screen, so i removed the side of the case to take a look and noticed where teh screw driver slipped,, i had actually taken out a 5mm chip out of the board, which unfortunately had many of the curcuit wires running through,, god knows wat they were for.. but they were no more :))
One motherboard upgrade later, i installed the CPu, which by the way,, i never did add the thermal paste, and 20-30 mins later, the CPU fried.. so i went out and bought a p4 3.0, intel mobo, new sound card, gfx card, hdd, c drom drives and case,, and just amde a comepletely new pc,,

i think he meant the little arm you use to lock down the cpu pins after its inserted;
also the best bet for pushing down the retention arm for a heatsink is a perfect sized ratchet head cause it wont slip as easy,
oh yea, last year i tried to make an amp and mistaked a pnp chip for an npn , burned, electrocuted and cut myself at the same time freaked out and dropped the solering gun on my hand, took a week to pick out the resin and i have a permanent shiny spot on my knuckle that wont tan right;

i jammed an amd chip into a p4 motherboard for fun lol. Then i started up the computer it worked fine for a few days (2-3) and then the chip fried lol. Luckly the components were free due to the fact that my school was throwing/selling their old p4's. Since i was studying IPT at that time we got the priviledge of taking a system home or at least salvaging parts for it :D Oh and i didn't bother to put on thermal paste because i was rushing to put the whole system together during lunch which gave me a grand total of 45 minutes.

I had to trim an older mobo down because it wouldn't fit right in my mini-ATX case. I tried using a paper board cutter, and that seemed to work fine. Apparently motherboards need that CPU slot to run, so it didn't go as planned. Thanks for the advice on that one, Steve. >:|

I was OCing and my computer wouldn't reboot so i had to remove the bios battery and put it back in. After that, i kept getting a system disk read failure. Then i just freaked out, thinking i had just fried something. I must of tried everything, boot disks, boot cds (well, maybe not everything) then i checked inside the case again. And i had unplugged that damn SATA plug from the hdd when i had removed the bios battery. XD (Just happened yesterday too)

First computer I went to transfer, from a HP mATX case to my current E-ATX Dragon,
I had no instructions of any kind. Decided to go ahead anyway (this was a 2400+ AXP -- the processor still works too) against what my parents were saying. Put everything in, looks great. Spent about an hour figuring out the front panel as it wasnt clearly labeled. After I got everything all nice and wired, i went to turn it on, boots right up....except that the motherboard doesnt seem to recognize any commands. Detects no mouse or keyboard...but they are plugged in! The only thing that works is the monitor, usb keyboards dont work, nothing. So i take the thing apart, and as i remove the motherboard, a screw falls out from under the mobo. Not only did it short the PS/2 and USB circuts, it decided to crack the motherboard! Being an HP mobo, it was out of warranty and i "had" to get an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe :D

I had a trainee in a computer shop do that also he was there with the owner all night trying to fix it cos it didnt work lmao.
I went in the next day had it all working in a hour (he never lived it down)
I requested some data from an ordering system be placed into a file (just 2 fields into a text file) thought nothing more till my boss got the bill for £23k
I left soon after ;)
i once built a new system plugged everything in and pressed the power button but there was not action so i took it all apart and put it all back together again... still nothing, no sound, no lights, nothing. After the third rebuild i noticed I hadn't turned the power switch on at the wall.

I bought a 60/80mm fan adapter for my heatsink, but it turns out that my heatsink fan is 70mm (AMD) so I bent the fan adapter outwards and only put in the top screws. The weight of the fan keeps it pressed down so I still use it :P

That usually means you have a problem with the house wiring. Maybe the ground and neutral are reversed, one of them is bad or has a bad connection at the receptacle or fuse/breaker panel. They make little testers to check for correct wiring.

well if you used an inverter and had your carputer set up correctly, how exactly does this equate to something stupid that you've done?

if i use really efficient speakers (unlike most car speakers) i won't need much power. 10-20 watts would suffice

there is a limit to how many times you can fold a horn. i'm not sure how that would apply here. i suppose some software would help us design the smallest possible 20hz horn.

well from the way i understand it, the mighty klipschorn uses the room as an "extension," hence its ability to dig so deep.
i guess that's why bass response sucks when its not in corners, or atleast has false corners...
i've been wanting to build my own set of khorns with swiveling tops so i'm not limited by a 45 degree angle. it makes seating arrangement a pain in the ???. i don't think anyone has done something like that yet, or atleast been public about it.

on my computer i use two keyboards 1 wireless and one wired. the reason being that if i have to go into safe mode or anything the wirless wont work until the drivers are loaded in windows. so a few weeks ago i was downloading something and zonealarm popped up saying it had treated win32.silly virus (or something like that so thought nothing of it. a few hours later i tried shutting down my computer but i was unable to click on the button as it was flashing from ok to cancel i kept trying with the mouse to select ok but i was not quick enough. i clicked on zonealarm selected virus scan but was unable to select anything there because it was just rolling through the options. after a few hours i thought bugger it i ll do a fresh install(which dont bother me much because i keep all my programs on a secound hd). formated c: then installed windowsxp when i goto the point of selecting time country date ect same thing again. buy now im fuming with this virus so i thought sod it refomated c: and d: thinking the virus was going back and forth. goto same stage again still no joy. i had wasted about 18hrs of my life with this (i had gone round to my brothers house to see what, when, why and how to deal with win32.silly) then it dawned on my as i sat in front of my computer the wired keyboard had fallen down the side of the case and the tab key was being pushed in. as i said 18hrs of my life and around 120g worth of data gone i could of cried.
