View Full Version : How to fix the configuration tool

With Sonic Adventure DX being only 4€ on Gamersgate, I bought it for my little sister, but when I checked the files, it uses the same exact config tool that the Steam version uses, but in the gamersgate version, the tool actually works. I tried to copy it into my PC, which has the Steam version of the game, and in the Steam version it didn't work.
But then I thought of something, what is the difference between the Gamersgate version and the Steam version, if they use the same config tool? The Gamersgate version is installed properly and it creates the needed entries in the registry, while the Steam version doesn't.
The config tool only works if the proper registry entry is there, on the Steam version the config tool doesn't detect that the game is installed.
Now on how to fix it:
Got to the start menu, use the run feature (or in case of Windows Vista or 7, you can use the search feature instead) and write "regedit".
For 64 bits Windows, once the registry editor is open, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then WoW6432Node, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Uninstall.
For 32 bits Windows, once the registry editor is open, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Uninstall.
Inside the Uninstall key, check if there's a key called SEGA, if there's not, right click on "Uninstall", click in "New", and then "Key". Then, name that key "SEGA".
Then, right click the "SEGA" key, create another new one called "Sonic Adventure DX".
Next, right click on the just created "Sonic Adventure DX" key to create a new "String Value" also with the name "Sonic Adventure DX".
To end this, double click the "Sonic Adventure DX" string value in the right window, and in the 2nd box write "1".
Now, the configuration tool will work.
The next picture kinda shows how to do this, at least for 64 bits windows. For 32 bits windows, it goes directly from the SOFTWARE key to Microsoft, there's no "WoW6432Node" Key for 32 bits windows.

Don't know if it happens with all directinput controllers or if just with Logitech ones, but found an issue with those, the Start button is automatically set to the right trigger and the camera rotates automatically.
To fix this, there's the XBox 360 controller emulator.
http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/downloads/list
How to use:
Download it to some random folder (don't put it on the game folder yet), extract it with winrar/winzip, or a similar software, open the program so it creates the x360ce.ini and the xinput1_3.dll files. Close the program and then copy the 3 files into the game folder and configure the controller buttons in the program. You only need to configure the buttons shown in the next picture:
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8259/x360ce1.jpg
After that, open the Advanced tab and select the Device Type as Gamepad, as seen in the next picture:
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/6655/x360ce2.jpg
Then, go to the Options tab, remove the tick from xinput9_1_0.dll and add the tick again, otherwise the config tool won't detect the gamepad as a XBox 360 controller.
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/9026/x360ce3.jpg
To end this, save the settings, close the program (after this the controller emulator doesn't have to be opened again), and open the Sonic Adventure DX config tool (that is, if you already performed the fix in the first post). Now the config tool should detect the controller as a XBox 360 controller, configure the buttons as you want, save, and now your controller will work properly, with the start button working as a start button, and the camera not spinning anymore.

It doesn't work with Space Channel 5 Part 2. :/
It should work with the other games as well, but since I only bought Sonic Adventure DX on Gamersgate, I don't know what are the names of the keys for the other games.
For example, for Space Channel 5, inside the SEGA key, a key has to be created specifically for Space Channel 5, and then a string value for that game, but I don't know which name you have to put there.
Most likely it should be the name of the .exe file, go to the steam folder, steamapps, common, space channel folder, check the name of the .exe, and use that name to create the key and the string value.

Yes, I have the same issue as Internetakias. It doesn't work with SEGA Bass Fishing either. It only works for Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure DX

For Space Channel 5 and SEGA Bass Fishing it should be something like this:
First, in the registry go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WoW6432Node\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
If it doesn't exist yet, create a new key called SEGA.
Here create another new key but I have no idea what are correct names for them. My guess is that for space channel 5 it's "Space Channel 5 Part 2" and for sega bass fishing it's "SEGA Bass Fishing", but it could use slightly different names.
Then, inside the space channel 5 key create a string value with the same name as the key, and modify its value to 1. Same thing for bass fishing.
If it doesn't work, it probably uses a different name.

That's exactly what I did. Maybe I should try naming it space channel 5 or something.
EDIT: Nope, that didn't work either. BTW, I'm using a 64 bit PC and I created the folder in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WoW6432Node\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall So, that means I didn't create a folder in the wrong path or something.

Try "Space Channel 5 P2", don't know if that will work, but it's worth a try.
If it doesn't work, post a screenshot of your registry window, since DarthSidious said that it's working for him in both Bass Fishing and Space Channel, it's possible that you could be doing something wrong.

I have no idea then, you did it right...
Or it has a different name, or... When you created the registry entries, have you tried opening the config tool, change the settings, save the settings, and then opening the game to see if the config tool is working? o_o;
Other than that I don't know, especially since it worked for another user.

I looked at your instructions and thought: "This can't possibly work. He's probably talking about some other problem with the config tool." -- but no, I followed the instructions, and suddenly the config tool sees my gamepad. Sega really dropped the ball on this. I have both a Logitech F510 and an Xbox 360 controller with the wireless receiver, and neither of them would work before, even after trying with x360ce. Maybe now I can actually play this game.

Does the config tool detect your controller as a XBox 360 controller?
If not, try this:
The config tool detects the Controller as Xbox 360 Controller for Windows #1, but...
1) when I go to assign controls in the SADX config tool the analog sticks are apparently not seen and cannot be assigned to movement.
2) Once in game, the game was completely unresponsive to the controller in any way despite setting up the controls in the config tool.
Following this, I used the x360ce, which got the controller working in game, but also started the spinning.
Going back into the config tool I set up the controls as best I could given the fact it still wasn't recognizing the sticks.
Upon reentering the game instead of the spinning camera, it now shakes left and right eventually settling on spinning to the right, while still shaking a bit...

So...before using the XBox 360 controller emulator it already detected your controller as a XBox 360 controller?
Then, try deleting the emulator controller files from the folder (x360ce.exe, x360ce.ini, xinput1_3.dll), then, on the Steam library, right click Sonic Adventure DX, go to properties, in the Local Files tab click the "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" option.
When it's finished with downloading everything it needs, open the config tool. The left stick not being detected in the config tool is normal, it happens to me too, just use the d-pad for the "up", "down", "right, "left" controls, in-game it'll still use the left stick.

Sonic Adventure DX Replacer (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2142262)
That explains it then, the "replacer" basically turns the new version of SADX into the old 2004 version, and most likely the config tool that comes in the new version doesn't work properly anymore.
If I'm not mistaken, it's possible to config the controller buttons in-game in the old version, dunno if it's like that with the replacer though.

Yeah, it enables the game to run in 1920x1080 though, the bordered version is just unbearable for me personally.
The in-game controller assignment doesn't work for me in any version of the game, in that it doesn't actually reassign anything, so no go there I'm afraid.
What I recall having to do to get rid of the spinning previously with my PS2 controller was to go into the config.ini file and delete anything related to control.

In the new version it's possible to play without the borders, by setting the resolution at 1024x768, there's no borders. At full screen it just stretches to fit the widescreen resolutions.
The new version does have lower graphics quality though.

If you haven't deleted the registry entries, and if they're named "Space Channel 5 Part 2", try opening the config tool, set the Screen Mode to Window, then open the game and see if it starts in window mode.
Then close the game, open the config tool again, set the Screen Mode to Full Screen, open the game and see if it starts in full screen.
If the game starts in window mode when you set it for window mode in the config, and if it starts in full screen when you set it for full screen in the config, that means that config tool is actually working and your problem could be something else (like a controller not being detected?).
If the game starts always in window mode, or always in full screen, independently of the settings you put, then the config doesn't really work and I can't figure out what's wrong.

hey, thanks for the help. Thanks to the first set of insturctions SADX is now detecting the controller... sort of. I tried going through the instructions to make the game detect it as an XBox controller, but with no luck. The configuration options (before going into the game) show that there is a controller present, but it is called "Standrad Game Controller for Windows #1" (yep, Standrad. I did not misspell that!) going into the game, after configuring the controller, I get various problems. Most commonly, the spinning camera, and the start/pause funtion set to the trigger button. Sometimes, I get no response from the controller at all. And once, I got Sonic walking slowly round and round in circles whenever I wasn't using the analog stick or direction button.
Am I doing something wrong? I've followed your instructions down to the letter, except possibly for where you said to move the x360ce.ini and the xinput1_3.dll files into the game folder. When you say "game folder" do you mean the SEGA\Sonic Adventure DX folder? Or did I misunderstand? That is where I moved the files to. Also, I have tried 3 completely different controllers (PS2 through USB adaptor, Saitek P880, and a controller called 'MadCatz' which a friend gave me to try with the game.) None of these seem to work properly (they work fine for other games) and all are detected as "Standrad Game Controller for Windows #1" by the SADX configuration menu.
Please help if you can!

Are you using the Steam version or the Gamersgate version?
Also, if you are using Steam, make sure to put both x360ce.ini and xinput1_3.dll in: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx, if you run Windows 7 x64 then it will be: C:\Program Files(x86)\steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx.
They have to be in the same folder as the main SADX executable, once they are, start the game, just start it, don't use the config and it should just work but make sure to check the controller mapping in x360ce before transfering the files otherwise you'll only have the same problem but maybe worse.
Hopefully that works for you.

Ok... it IS recognizing the controller, because something is happening. The only thing that seems to work is pressing the button to confirm on the opening menu screen only. (Which is where X would be on a PlayStation controller). Apart from that I don't get any response from the controller whatsoever.

The controller fix isn't working for me. I've followed the instructions and that picture posted above with no luck. Do I need to do the registry edit as well in order for it to work?
EDIT: To elaborate, when I first launched the config tool, it worked (hence why I haven't messed with the registry and would prefer not to), but there was no controller detected. I'm using some Logitech USB controller that looks like a Playstation controller. After following those steps exactly and running the config tool, the dropdown box still remains grayed out.

The registry fixed worked for me, 64bit win7 with a wired 360 controller. The buttons were all mapped totally strangely when I played the game, but this was easily fixed by using the in-game button mapping tool in the pause menu once you start adventure mode. Just need the keyboard to get there initially.
Note that I also used the texture pack and fixes in this thread, including the 360 exe patch further down from the OP: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2497018

The controller isn't detected because the config tool is broken (the registry thing is to fix the config tool), but by using the x360 controller emulator tool, the game itself should detect the controller without you needing to use the configuration tool.

Thanks for all your help, but after doing everything you've said, it's still not working.
In fact now that I've followed the steps it seems the game is only picking up the keyboard and won't pick up the gamepad at all.
And now Sonic 4 Ep1 isn't working either.
This is making me wonder whether some seemingly unrelated issue elsewhere with my computer is causing the problem for me, because i have followed your advice right down to the letter.

I've tried three different controllers, so I don't think it can be that. Besides, it shows the name of whichever controller I am using (or trying to use) in the emulator's interface, so it's clearly recognizing the fact that the controller is there. :\

You either didn't follow the steps correctly, or you could be having a similar problem to another user here:
I found the problem, the configuration tool doesn't like user folders with weird letters, so I renamed my userfolder and now everything's working fine.

Neither is too weak to run SADX, it could be the GPU isn't supported or the drivers are too outdated. I can run SADX on: 1.6GHz Pentium D, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 128MB Intel G series that is NOT meant for gaming at all and that old laptop runs SADX just fine.

Hoping someone can answer this. I've attempted to reconfigure the camera button settings on CE, configuration tool, the ini file AND the in-game control mapping. None of this seems to work, the damn camera just won't work on anything but the shoulder buttons. I just want it changed to the trigger buttons(for convenience sake, it feels weird on the shoulder buttons).
tl;dr: Need the camera left and right controlls changed to either the trigger buttons, or my right control stick. I'm using an Afterglow 360 controller.

X360CE: http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/downloads/detail?name=x360ce.App-2.0.2.158.zip&can=2&q=
Download that, make a profile for your controller, usually it creates one automatically if you go into the Internet Database.
I have an Afterglow PS3 controller and it created my profile perfectly.
Then save the settings, close X360CE and copy all the files in the X360CE folder except for the .exe (More specifically: x360ce.ini, xinput1_1.dll, xinput1_2.dll, xinput1_3.dll and xinput9_1_0.dll) into the game folder where Sonic Adventure DX.exe is located which would be: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx" for x64 Widnows 7 and "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx" for anyone running any x32 copy of any Windows version.
Seeing as our controllers are the same except for which console they work for the control scheme should be the same, mine uses the triggers for camera rotation and the control stick for the first person camera and the rest are their respectful buttons. No need to make a config file this way.

So...I did everything you mentioned to get the controller working, and it works fine except for one thing. The camera controls are set to the left and right bumpers, not the left and right triggers like I had wanted. What's weird, is that if I go to the configuration tool, it will set the left and right triggers just fine, same with the program. But soon as I get in-game, it reverses to the Bumpers. This is confusing T__T
loanstar744
07-11-2012, 06:48 PM
That's okay, just go into the X360CE config tool and swap the bumpers for the triggers, then save, then replace the files in the Sonic Adventure DX folder like you just did to fix it. Problem solved. C:

Some controllers have this effect on SADX, use X360CE, setup your game pad and dump the files next to the .exe of SADX, from what I've seen, the only way to fix it is to trick it into thinking you're using a 360 controller. Mine did the same thing.

Are you running x32 or x64 Windows 7/Vista?
If you're running x32:
For 32 bits Windows, once the registry editor is open, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Uninstall.
If you're running x64:
For 64 bits Windows, once the registry editor is open, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then WoW6432Node, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Uninstall.
Are you sure you followed the steps exactly? Because every version of Windows has that section of registry keys.

Hello. I am glad to have found some help for these controller/camera issues. Thank you for putting some help out there.
However, I am still having problems with my controller and camera in the SADX game. I bought a Dreamcast DVD collection online with the 4 games on it and I bought a non-brand name controller because all the game said was that it needed a 10 or 12 button controller.
Obviously, I've run into all the same issues here. My camera POV tilts up to the sky and spins clockwise. It doesn't have that problem when there is no controller connected.
Anyway. I've gone through the steps outlined in this post numerous times. I can never get the thing to be fixed.
One question I have is at the bottom of my controller emulator there is a count that is running up, a reload number and error number. I don't know if this means there is a problem with the emulator or what.
Another (possibly silly) question I have is in the directions it is stated to copy the 3 files into the game folder. Well, there are 4. I've tried copying the 3 main files, and I've tried copying all 4 files. (btw, does it matter if it's in the SEGA folder or specifically the SADX folder? I've also tried both but maybe it does matter.)
I could try and do a screen grab if needed but the files that I copy and put in my game folder are labeled: x360ce application, x360ce configuration setting (which is 3 kb large), xinput1_3 DLL file, xinput9_1_0 DLL file.
I wish I could get this fix to work but it doesn't work for me. Do you have any suggestions for me?
And another question... I think I've read somewhere that even people with a 360 controller still had issues. I was pondering buying a 360 controller for Windows. So, do they work or not?

I'm assuming your controller is already setup in X360CE, so just copy all the files: x360ce.ini, xinput1_1.dll, xinput1_2.dll, xinput1_3.dll and xinput9_1_0.dll into your sonic adventure dx folder, the same folder that has the "sonic adventure dx.exe" in it.
I'm not familiar with the DVD box set, do the games activate through Steam?
To answer your question; yes, the Xbox 360 controller is a great controller and well worth the money, it's hassle free and they tend to last for years of constant plays, I have two wireless and one wired, all original before the new style and have had them for almost 3 years of constant usage.
I've also never had issues with my Xbox controller in SADX nor have I had issues with my PS3 controller running through X360CE or DS3Tool. But you will have those camera issues when using a non supported game pad.

Start up X360CE with your controller plugged in, on the main page under the general tab that shows at startup, click each button and set it to each button on your controller.
When you startup X360CE it should look like so: ( http://www.mediafire.com/view/?00l80ej647p7p# )
On that page shown is where you edit the controls to how you like them then hit save at the bottom right of the program next to load and reset. Usually the program picks up all kinds of controllers and sets them up automatically. Try going to the "Settings Database" tab ( http://www.mediafire.com/view/?00l80ej647p7p#okfrx6xzsa6866i ) and see if it finds your settings, if not you'll have to setup each control yourself which isn't too bad.
Those files DO NOT come with X360CE they compile from X360CE after you save your configuration. Also make sure all these are checked in the "Options" tab: ( http://www.mediafire.com/view/?00l80ej647p7p#vwocg15bwot0tgx ).
After saving your configuration and controller settings you should have these highlighted files here: ( http://www.mediafire.com/view/?00l80ej647p7p#fcu46c5e4y0yzsc ).
Then place those highlighted files in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx" or C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx" if you're running 32 bit Windows, like so: ( http://www.mediafire.com/view/?00l80ej647p7p#wt40mywg7p39llh ).

Thank you again for answering me.
I'm still having some issues, unfortunately. Let's try to start at the beginning. (BTW, I also did do the regedit stuff that another member laid out in the first post of this thread. Just FYI.)
I have opened up the emulator and configured the buttons as shown in your first picture link.
In your second picture link, regarding the settings database... under the title in the left upper most drop down list it is saying 1. USB Vibration Joystick. (I told you I bought a generic controller! :) ) But I can't click on it or anything, so I don't really know if this is okay or not. I just mean that it is in that light grey text that lets you know it's there but isn't selectable. When you say see if it sees your settings, what do you mean exactly?
Regarding your third picture link in which we are in the options tab... I am unable to select the boxes... oh wait a second. As I went back in there while writing this to you, the first two boxes under Installed Files are now checked. In the grey-out text, meaning I can't uncheck them now, but they are checked. Fine. Everything else in your screen cap is checked in my emulator.
Lastly, I have all those files created that you showed highlighted and I copied and placed them in my C program files (x86)... where I found my game after I opened my SEGA folder, then Dreamcast folder, and finally the Sonic Adventure DX game folder. It asked for admin permission to do this. I then closed everything down.
(Oh, and I just wanted to clarify, you DON'T include the x360ce.exe in the copy and paste into the game folder, right?)
Then I opened my game which is in my DVD drive and under Game Config settings it still says Standrad Game Controller for Windows #1. Nothing else is in the drop down menu.
Also, the game will recognise my controller if I were to assign buttons in Game Config, but once I open the game it will not sense my controller at all.
I know I keep saying this but I really do appreciate people trying to help me here. I know it's a little frustrating that I have very novice skills in all this, so I fear I may not be as helpful in knowledge of what I'm doing. I'm trying my best to give you as much information as possible. I don't know what in the world the problem could be.

Yes, where it says "USB Vibration Joystick" should be grayed out, that's only for if you have multiple controllers plugged in.
Settings Database goes online and finds the controls for your controller and applies them automatically, if you see in this image it shows in green text at the top it received the settings successfully: ( http://www.mediafire.com/view/?00l80ej647p7p#j3dk7ptf22b5ozg )
That's perfectly fine, the top two boxes are supposed to be checked and grayed out.
Do you have to have the install disc in the drive in order to play your Dreamcast Collection games? if so, this could be the problem, it maybe running the .exe from the disc and NOT the folder, which means there is no way to get that emulator to work with it unless you had some kind of no-disc patch, but this is purely speculation as I can't say for sure or not if it's running from the disc. Try running the game from the .exe in the Sonic Adventure DX folder instead.
Also, correct, you do not copy the x360ce.exe, just the other files.
If you could kindly take a snapshot of your screen in the folder you pasted those files, I'd like to make sure that it's not different from the Steam version. You can send a link to the snapshot through Private Message if it'd make you feel safer, some people don't like posting pictures of their desktop.
No worries, I do troubleshooting and tech support all the time, let's just focus on getting that controller working with SADX.

Just bought this game in the steam sale.
I followed OP's post to the letter and it still doesn't work for me. Also when I reload the game, my saves are gone. No matter what I do, when I quit the game, the save isn't there when I relaunch.
Thanks in advance

Hey guys.
Just bought this game in the steam sale.

I could never get the registry edit to work either, the config program would just crash afterwards.
Did you make sure these folders exist: Win7/Vista: "C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\SEGA" and inside should show folders titled for each game like "Crazy Taxi" and "Sonic Adventure DX". Those folders have to be created in order to save your progress, sometimes the games don't create the folders.

I don't understand the text on the picture in the first post. Can you re-upload it?

Well hot damn. Anyone who uses this fix and the Config.exe just crashes, delete the config.ini in "Documents/SEGA/Sonic Adventure DX".
I tried everything and that finally fixed it, apparently there are parameters it can't can't read if you edited yourself and it crashes the config.exe.
Hope this helps at all and if possible, Ezo, could maybe add that to the first post? I know a lot of people were having that same issue and never solved it.
