Pure hack n' slash. There's dialogue but no choices from what I've seen - you just get dialogue options to ask questions. It seems like the combat is decent... better than Dungeon Siege 3 (but really, what isn't?). Not impressed with the characters - they all seem very bland. The story is pretty generic. The talent trees seem limited but servicable.

Overall kind of boring so far. For such a high pricetag - I expect better. Seems like a 20-30 dollar game, I suggest waiting for a pricecut/sale. Just my 2 cents.

Thats why I read the reviews. It aint that great.

Lord of the Rings The Third Age was better even though it was a console game.

My first impressions:

This game is a poor man's Hunted: The Demon's Forge. And please don't tell me that this game isn't anything like Hunted, because this game is almost EXACTLY like Hunted in every imaginable way, except that the character movement, whether walking, or running, or engaging in combat, is not nearly as fluid, and there's no cover system.

Hunted is twice the game that this is. Hunted blows this game out of the water. This is just a massive, massive disappointment. I'm trying to find something here to enjoy, since I paid $33 for this, but I'm pretty much drawing a blank here.

This may be one of the worst games of 2011.

Before playing this, I wanted to dismiss the reviews. I guess we tend to do that when we're looking forward to something.

Now that I've actually played it - wow. Just hugely, hugely disappointing.

O how the mighty have fallen. Hard to imagine these guys' old PS2 games can sell for $150 or more. What makes people think they can have success with an RPG (action, casual, or otherwise) in this day and age without a degree of freedom, procedurally generated content (or at least lots of loot), and some variety?

I'm not asking for Diablo III or even Two Worlds III, but a developer with this kind of pedigree ought to at least be up to the standard of its previous games.

I'm hoping all this negative buzz is an overreaction, but I sure as hell don't mean to find out firsthand until the holiday sale.

Here's a quick thought for a new thread: are there actually ANY good new games that have come out worth $50? I mean seriously the last couple years on steam have been !@#!-poor quality games thrown out at our elitist crowd to generate a quick buck. Examples: A Game of Thrones Genesis (Capitalizing on the successful tv and book series), Stronghold 3 (another good concept after M&B but fail quality) and Terraria (at least that one didnt cost much lol). I suggest everyone stop impulse buying, and sit back and let these companies actually WORK for our money!!

You guys are Harsh! - This game is not bad, the person who compared it to hunted or dungeon siege, it's that style. If you like those types of games it's 100% fine to play, especially with other people. I played several hours, the stories from a book and its LOTR - not sure how you call it bland. It's supposed to be linear but then again I really enjoy linear games. It's not as bad as you are saying. Compared to its self - it's a good game, not great - but worth the time to invest 40+ hours in like I did hunted.

Well, his opinion is weak at this point until he puts in a few more hours, and that’s at least a few hours at best.

Me personally, I’m loving this game. It’s not game of the year, but you know what? I don’t care. All I care about is that it’s got Coop and its Lords of the Ring. And it’s a hell of a lot of fun. Defiantly worth buying!!!

I'm really enjoying it too. Has a lot of nice features (separate inventory bag for each item slot is cool, for one) and the co op is pretty seamless. Looking forward to playing start to finish with the same crew )

steam (digital distribution in general) is part of the problem in this regard... We buy a digital version that we're stuck with, good or bad. It does not cost the company anywhere near as much to create a digital copy of the game, yet we initially pay the same as the store bought copies. Yet they get to return them in many cases -- or at least swap/trade. So a $50 gamble might recoup $40 in a week or so.

Buying digitally, we're stuck. If we love it and finish it. We're stuck. if we hate it and never play again. We're stuck.

Definitely wait until sales and the game comes down to a reasonable price that's more in line with the product we're receiving.

I think you're being way too easy on this title. I was expecting something almost great here - not something utterly mediocre.

Is it bad, bad, bad? No. It's not Catwoman, say. But it is very, very mediocre. It could have been SO much more.

The actual combat is pretty fun.. its too damn expensive though. Should be 20-30 USD and I would give it a 9. Hack and slash mostly, it's fun but dont expect any depth really.

I can only speak for the 360 controller, and the controls are very clunky. It felt bad as soon as I started playing. I mean, even 'steering' the character while out of combat feels sluggish.

My controlled character is too far from the camera, and doesn't stay focused on the NPCs. I'm constantly battling the camera and the controls, not to mention my own computer controlled party members who are constantly in the way.

I've been trying to get into this game, and just have fun, but all I'm seeing is flaw after flaw. Honestly, nothing depresses me more than buying a title day one that sucks. The vast majority of titles I buy, I love (at least for the first week) - but this ain't one of them.

I don't buy steam games from steam any more as STEAM charges to much for Australians and EURO, unless they are on special for say 5-10 bux..

All I can say Mikey is that your first mistake was trusting in a Console game to deliver a good experience.

On the PC the controls are flawless, I’ve had no issues at all playing the game or moving around. The games been pleasantly good. Can’t really say much more than that.

Um, I'm on the PC. I have a GTX 480 SLI setup. Clearly, the game was designed with the controller in mind. And I can assure anybody reading this that the controls are far from flawless. There isn't even a walk toggle.

This game has got console port written all over it. One of the biggest turds of 2011. I'm sorry, but this game is just bad... really bad.

There isn't even a walk toggle.

Its not really the type of game that needs a "walk" feature.

I did try playing with a controller though myself, xbox one, didnt really like it. Keyboard and mouse felt better. But thats from playing it on ONLIVE, which isnt a very good experience for any game.

I can enthusiastically confirm that War In The North gets miles better a couple hours in. I had to restart, because I pumped all my points into magic, and ended up gimping my character (the elven girl actually needs strength and health, since she'll be going melee with her staff, like it or not).

I've gotten to the Barrow Downs, and the game is becoming somewhat addictive now.

So yeah, my opinion of this title is changing the more I play.

Yeah, this sums it up for me.

If I had known my thread would attract so much attention - I would have put in more effort. I just wanted to post something for ppl on the fence so they didn't waste their money if pure hack n' slash wasn't what they were looking for - which is the one thing I could tell from my limited time playing the game.

I've played it some more and while it's not a bad game, it's certainly outclassed by many, many great PC titles out there and with Skyrim on the horizon I would suggest saving your money.

Well, it depends what you like to play, style wise. But I didn't feel ripped off buying the recent Fallout titles, or Borderlands, at full retail.

On the gripping hand, Diablo III is the next game I'm actually planning on buying when it first comes out at mucho dinero.

I buy, mmm, a quarter or so of my games after they take the big price drop after six months or so. Aside from the thin handful of must-haves, I buy the other three quarters on DEEP discount, like the Steam Winter & Summer sales.

But then I am a cheap bastid.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but if you buy a $50 game, especially one without a demo, on day one....

Well, at best you KNOW you're taking a chance.

Lol you play for 1/2 hour and you know how good the game is.. says it all. Then we have those that read that and BAM! They also know why they should not buy the game. Then we have those that read some review and DUH the person doing the review is 100% giving a unbiased review.. haha

For ME and I am honest if I can't find a demo I download the game and try it.. if I like it I buy it. As I did this one. I love the game. Just not alot of games that look AWESOME in Nvidia 3D as this one does. But please I plaid $44 ..wow who cares

Now that I've spent two nights playing War In The North, I can say that I was too harsh on it. I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit now.

But Hunted: The Demon's Forge is underrated. Best archer character ever, in my opinion. If only Bethesda could have slipped Elara into Skyrim. She also makes Garett's marksmanship skills look like child's play.
