View Full Version : Pings are higher?

I have run CS servers since beta 7 with Counter-Strike I put up my first Source server this weekend. I am experiencing higher pings on this server then I have with my normal CS servers. Is anyone else noticing this?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I have messed with maxrates and minrates with little noticable success.

I am running Fedora Core2 on a Duel 1.5's P4 with a gig of ram. I am not running anything else on this box.

We find our 40 player source server uses less cpu than our 32 player 1.6.

There is a little more bandwidth used though

Well I am really not sure about the CPU usage yet because I have not had it full yet. I used to run all Linux servers with 1.4 then 1.5 I believe the CPU usage went through the roof. So we switched to Windows and the problem was solved with 1.6 CPU wise. I tried Linux with Source because it was my understanding it ran fine under Linux. I hope this proves to be true with CSS. But those pings are higher for some reason. And pingboost doesn't seem to do anything. I am really not sure if that is a valid command anymore. But the pings are about 20 higher then our 1.6 servers. But those are running in Windows.

Not using Windows would be good. I would much rather stick to Linux and am really hoping it runs good. :/

I run on a crappy 384 up connection and I can host a 12 player server with lag only in peak hours. Most of the time people have pings in the 90's to 110's but nobody complains about lag except during peak hour, so unless people are lagging i wouldn't worry about it.

I would imagine that CS:S uses more bandwidth because you have more data traveling to/from players with regard to physics objects in the world. Other than that, it shouldn't be much.

its not an bandwidth issue.
im expecting extremly high cpu load and higher pings.
currently im running a 22 player server on a celeron 2ghz with 1gig ddr 400.

during heavy firefights the cpu is loaded up to 80% while the old cs1.5 only used up to 60% with 32 players.

using fedora core 1.

After tuning my client config i got the same ping as in 1.6 and also the same ping as i see in HLSW.

Using default entries will result in a higher ping ... ~20ms

Give it a try.
