OK, i am Eradan at level 8 on single player on normal (i don't do co-op or multiplayer ever) and i have been killed by this scumbag about 50 times/several hours. As far as i can see, its not possible to win this because the AI die too quickly and there is simply no time to revive them. Then everyone is after me and its impossible to survive. The most I have got is his health half way down, but i've tried everything. Seems to be a single player problem with the AI quite useless in helping me. yes, ive read other posts on this (dodging him etc etc) but for me is simply impossible. Im no beginner (did witcher 2 on insane which didn't rely on useless AI team members!!) but this has beaten me - I've literally come to a halt in the game. Help!!!!!

I played normal/hero and am now on legendary. To be honest I found the ranger to be very useless for me (he was an AI as I played solo). I would check the stats that show up between chapters and he was always the lowest DPS/kills and damage dealt. Since you are only at the first boss and are having a great amount of trouble I highly suggest re rolling the dwarf or elf. You will have a lot more fun overall if you do.

I know there are those on here that like the ranger but as stated he was always the lowest on stats for me. He seemed useless lol

Your other option is to start over and do the easy level. This game will level with you. After you finish easy level, you can go and do normal or heroic mode for your second go around.

The game does get really good with some seriously epic battles!

I too am having trouble with this boss, and am also playing as the ranger. I tried replaying the level with the dwarf (rapidly assigning his stats at the beginning of the fight), but still couldn't beat the fight. I may try Andriel next, but would appreciate any tactics or strategies in using these characters, if the ranger can't make it.

Is this the first boss?

This is where I restarted the game, and leveled up my elven Mage anew, this time going for half strength, and half magic (I went all out magic before, and gimped my character). You also need lots of health and mana pots. At level 17 I'm uneasy having fewer than 30 pots of each. In Mirkwood, I just fought a crazy battle involving six or seven high level orcs at the same time, and went through about 15 mana pots. Just crazy stuff.

That boss IS do-able in single player. My advice: start again, and re-spec your character.

Restart the game, change it to Easy and start from there.

This game is worth sticking around and playing if you do this.

Mirkwood is a blast!!! It has to be my fav zone with my elf. I love AOE'ing all of those spiders :D

Every character's strategy will differ. The basics are to watch the target's movements. He is slow to move and attack but when he lifts the sword over his head ~ WATCH OUT! His special attack hurts a lot so look got that sword being raised over his head. You will need to dodge a WHOLE bunch. Whenever he comes running at you, hit your space bar and go into a roll. This boss has no ranged attack so just keep rolling. You can roll *into* him as well and he won't block your roll. Also, start with the ranged while he is still on the platform. Make sure to aim at his feet or a tiny bit lower (until you get the red target sign). The more damage you can do while he is up on the platform the better! Try not to fight the trash monsters or at the very least fight them off to get away (by rolling) the boss will respawn more fighters as soon as you kill one, its never ending so it just wastes time to go after the others.

My RL friend and I came very close to killing Tharzog, using the Mage as the AI. But, we did not have any health pots and I had switched to 1h and shield when my 2H lost its durability.
We are gonna go back to Bree for repairs and health pots and we should be able to kill him as we came very close.
Had I had a 2H and health pots i would have killed him.
We are level 8 amd 7

I played human dual wield specialization and I kill him in third time. So, no problem to kill him in singleplayer on normal mode.

Was finally able to beat him. I used Farin, and placed skill points that made warcry regenerate health and strengthen armor. I started off firing all of Farin's bolts into the boss, dodging other enemies at the same time. Used a lot of warcries, swoop attacks when surrounded, and finally strong attacks from behind the boss when the bolts ran out. Eventually the fight was won.

I got through it without too much trouble playing as the Ranger. It all depends on your build, as my Eradan has been kicking butt and taking names :)

First of all stoclk up on health and power potions (Health most importantly) OK this is a long post but get it right and you will thank me...

Most common consensus... Tharzog is too OP in SP...

Yes and no, yes if you deal to him as you have with all other minions you will get munted but think about it realistically if he existed a brute that size with thick Armour and a sword that size would either kill you with one direct hit or knock you to within an inch of your life (85%) so enter the cool part of War in the North...heroic mode etc. The secret for this battle lies with legendary sever. As it would be in reality, a fight like this requires a lot of patience. Focus on one minion at a time but not careless and reckless hacking. These guys take 30-50 direct hits to take down unless...

This method will nail a minion in 10 seconds or so...
Atop your target will be a white triangle marker. Hack at your enemy until enough successive hits colors said marker yellow. Right click for a brutal hit enabling heroic mode then repeat (now your swings are a yellowish color and faster with the successive hits being counted. another 5 or so strikes and yellow marker again...Right click for legendary sever and your minion looses 2000+HP and a head or a limb! Easy as when you get that down! As for Tharzog himself, all characters can take care of him but in your case @casinostomper rangers power shot (1) and stun shot are good here just make sure you keep on dodging by hammering the space bar. Lots of running! Run, roll Shoot, Run Roll Shoot, Sever... etc.

Have fun but for what it is worth once I got the sever thing down pat I was able to kick his leathery hide with all characters (I have tried all 3 and once I got the technique down I only upped stamina for HP! on all char's)

Very tough, but absolutely possible. Just defeated him with ranger, 8 lvl. Dual wielding weapons, constantly chaining legendary sever. It took quite a bunch of retries, though -- mostly thanks to the stupid AI companions.
