I downloaded the demo and see if it was worth if for the daily deal, but the demo was not working.Logo wasn't visible, only the intro video and after that black screen.Alt tabbing would let me see the menu but it is like a screenshot.Clicking the options would make a sound, like it is changing but i do not see any change.Only alt tabbing would let me see the menu, again like a screenshot.
So I buy the full game thinking they have patched the game but still the same.

+rep for trying a demo first. Now I'm going to check it before I buy as I have a similar system.

The demo works fine for me. I have a 5850 also, with a Core i7 860 clocked at 4GHz, 4GB RAM on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.

So far so good, except whenever I get an achievement or Shift-Tab to the community overlay, the screen goes black. This is annoying, and could potentially pose a problem as the game is still going on while I stare at a black screen.

Any ideas?

 been testing the same configuration and it worked. Did you update drivers?

Are you using multiple screens?

Nope.

LE: Found the issue. It appears Fraps is conflicting with the game so exiting fraps made the game work.
LE 2:It also appears the Steam overlay is conflicting with the game, so when someone is playing something the screen will go black until the notification disappears.

Nice you've found it.

It also appears the Steam overlay is conflicting with the game, so when someone is playing something the screen will go black until the notification disappears.

I understand that the conflict appears when Fraps is on, right? Cuz normally Steam overlay is not influencing the game, at least in 99% of cases...

When Fraps is turned off, it conflicts with the steam overlay.Shift tab for the overlay will make the game screen go black(as the overlay is transparent you can see behind it), receiving notifications will also do this.

LE: It seems i'm not the only one http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2243796

(I merged the threads, so there's this minimal work I do to keep the Anomaly-Steam-forums at least a little clean)

OK, let's try to track the bug. What hardware do you use guys?

What else do you need?

Well, you wrote your PC's specs, so I'd need TheSagetEffect's hardware details. I'm trying to find out if he/she is having the same GPU or something.

I'm having a HD4890 / Phenom II X4 955 / 16GB RAM / Win7 x64 and haven't noticed any oddities while using Fraps both in standby and recording mode. Steam Overlay opens fine (always, even when Fraps isn't running), no black screens, no flashing, nothing. Everything works as it is supposed to work.

Thought I'd post that to clarify that this doesn't seem to be a general issue with Fraps or the game itself.

LE: Found the issue. It appears Fraps is conflicting with the game so exiting fraps made the game work.
LE 2:It also appears the Steam overlay is conflicting with the game, so when someone is playing something the screen will go black until the notification disappears.

I'd rather guess the problem is somewhere on your end - most likely a software-side problem. If the Steam Overlay really would conflict with the game then surely a lot more people would have that problem and a lot more people would be reporting it / asking for help here.

Did you try running the game with no other stuff running in the background? Like, starting Windows, closing all unnecessary processes and only having Steam running? This would probably be the easiest way to find out if maybe another program interferes with the game.

Other than that it might be worth a try to do a complete (!) uninstall of your current graphics drivers and downgrade them to a previous version and see if the problem persists.

@TheSagetEffect
So, are you using the same card, processor etc. as x_elx?
