I was thinking today about random ideas that might suit a later version of RotT. (I really need to play it again, I got it with HIB, and haven't seen some of the changes in later versions! So it's possible, though rather unlikely, that any facets of the ideas I'm about to present are implemented. Feel free to shoot me if they are, however.)
Firstly, I think it could be cool, though difficult to balance, to implement a way by which a player could play as the Titans themselves, attacking the different planetary bases. I don't know how you'd balance it because there's no building that the Titans do (AFAIK), no base to protect etc. but if it can be solved, it might make interesting playing.
Secondly, on the back of the first, if you have the ability to play as the Titans, there's no gameplay reason (though plenty of technical ones :() for not implementing 2-player competitive play, one player as the Titans, one as the base defender. Radically different styles of playing (you're not both base building) but could be interesting.
Lastly, 2-player co-operative mode. Make maps about 2-3x bigger than they currently are in each direction (so maps are 4-9x bigger in total), then drop in 2-4 bases. To win, the players simply need to defend at least one base, which provides all kinds of tactical play opportunities.
Do you neglect one base and protect the other? Do you have one player building defences and the other raising cash or something else? Just for fun, you could set it up that the two players have independent cash balances and so are independently responsible for protecting their own bases at the same time, as opposed to tying it together; I would imagine it would work better with a single budget between both players though.
I'm not sure if there wouldn't be huge balance issues to be resolved, though, but I think it could make interesting playing at least...
