View Full Version : Game only uses one native DRM method

I've been reading a lot about how this game has DRM on top of DRM on top of DRM. I wanted to clear that up a bit and hopefully inform people of some stuff.

Games for Windows Live in both Batman games is not DRM. You do not have to activate it, you do not have to use it and you do not have to even notice it is there. First, make an offline profile. The default for an offline profile is "Player1" which is what I use. The option for an offline profile can be easy to miss, but it is there. Second, in the settings menu turn notifications to off. Now, GFWL is not DRM and invisible.

Steam DRM is used because you buy the game on Steam. If you do not want Steam DRM simply buy the game elsewhere. I can confirm after purchasing the game on Origin today that it does not require the Origin client to install or play, meaning Origin is only used to download the files, similar to Gamersgate or Direct2Drive. Make sure to have "keep downloaded files" turned on in the Origin settings menu, this will leave a nice install package in the desired directory. Simple copy those files to have a permanent backup and close or uninstall Origin.

The SecuROM DRM is the only DRM native to Arkham City and the only one you will have to deal with when purchasing from a client-free store. It limits you to 5 machines and is generally BS, as stated elsewhere. It does activate after the install process however, making removing it a simple task via patch should the company ever close and want to do so.

I hope this helps.

The game will not correctly run without GFWL (erases your save files if you are disconnected), people who got the game with codes (that's a HUGE percentage of users) must use Steam, and securom is horrifyingly intrusive.

GFWL runs in the background but does not need to be activated or online. Simply make an offline profile on your PC and use that to play. It's the equivalent of an in-game profile system.

I like GFW, I see all the friends on my Xbox and I get gamerscore + steam achievements. I just don't like the Securom limited install garbage.

I have experienced saves disappearing due to exactly this and so have others.

I use this method for all my GFWL games and have never had a problem. They would not offer an offline profile if it didn't work.

You need to use a profile like it says, yes. It can be an offline profile you never activate however. That's the point.

This is a common misunderstanding with GFWL, that when it says profile it means signing in online. It does not mean that.

That's the logic, yet not the reality.

If everything was that simple we'd all be happy after all.

So yeah, i've seen complaints and reports of people losing GFWL saves all the time in almost every game forum to do with a game that uses GFWL linked with offline profiles.

and again, why the ♥♥♥♥ do I need a profile? the game has its own game save system, why do I need to take the time to figure out the ins and outs of some ♥♥♥♥ty 3rd party app? rhetorical question since you seem to be carrying water for GFWL and already know what kind of response I'll get.

Carrying water? I don't like the program either, but that doesn't change the reality that it isn't DRM unless it has a forced activation during install. It doesn't this time.

I'm trying to be informative.

>it isn't DRM unless it has a forced activation during install

I remember the days when "DRM" was "Have the disc in the drive while playing"

GFWL is still DRM either way, it's just marginally worse at its job than most DRM.

I'm trying to be informative.

If you're being informative with inaccurate information then you aren't helping anybody.
