View Full Version : Cossacks 2 : Napoleonic Wars: which version?

Hi,

I would like to know which version ( engine version) Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars has on Steam.

Anyone with an installed version can answer this question for me (if unsure, start the game and go the main menu, it should have the version number in the lower right corner).

Is it 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2?

Aswell, could someone tell me the default install path ( full) where the game is installed?

I'm interested for 2 reasons:

- I see many problems on this forum who have been adressed in patch 1.2 ( problems on the 3rd campaign mission,...).

- Modding purposes...

Thanks in advance for an answer.

This is in the corner: 1.1 [B055]
Where can I get patch 1.2 from?

Thank you for your answer.

Now if someone could tell me the path where the game is installed?
C:Program Files\GSC GameWorld\ Cossacks 2\...
or is it C: Program Files\Steam\...?

^^ the 1.2 patch installer will look for an installed version off C2 in the register and I'm not sure if the patch is in a Steam folder it will recognize the game to install the patch.

Thanks in advance for any reply

I would play the game with less bugs.
this is the path
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\cossacks ii napoleonic wars\

Right, thanks for that.

It eludes me why GSC gave version 1.1 to Steam to be distributed, when there is a 1.2 version out there since 2006.

So I went to look on GSC's own Cossacks 2 public files server ( http://xfiles.gsc-game.com/cs2/ )
And indeed it is not there. Only a 1.1 patch.

So I started tracing the origin of the 1.2 patch.

It was initiated by Cossacks2-net.de and supported by CDV and GSC, as was stated on that site, which by now, no longer has a Cossacks 2 section.
It can however be viewed by using the inetarchive machine ( http://web.archive.org/web/20060813162950/http://www.cossacks2-net.de/index.php?section=patch&lang=eng )

It fixes a variety off bugs and improves balance to the game:

The patch itself can be found on a variety off sites;(google is your friend); amongst:

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20997823/C2_PATCH_V1_2.exe

http://cossacksworld.ucoz.co.uk/load/c_ii_patches/45

Again , since the game is installed in a steam folder, one wont be able to install it since it looks in the register for a different install path.

At best one could extract the files and manually place them in the Data\folder, but that could cause problems with steam. Since I dont have the steam game, I can't try it out myself.
I already own 2 legally bought copies of the game , I doubt I'll buy a third.

Ideally, GSC should have steam push this patch trough their update system.

It's not just about the bugfixes and balancing, but steam players with 1.1 can't play with everyone else who have 1.2 and vice versa. It will cause synchronisation errors online.

@ManOwar - LinuxLover: please look into this, it makes no sense to me.
I get people on the cdv forums asking about their problems with their steam version, I get people on my own site asking about their problems with this steam version, which problems on average could be solved with the 1.2 patch.

I shouldn't even be here saying this, but I for one care about the players ability to enjoy the game, rather than whichever, last century bureaucratic policies between companies as to who gets to patch and publish what , are in place. Players don't care.

I hope I dont need to explain that worth to mouth between players can go incredibly fast that the steam version is an 'old' and 'unpatched' version and should be left aside. Give them the most uptodate version, it will do good to the sales off the game trough this platform.

Best Regards

Thank you,
I will try the patch. It shouldn't cause problems with Steam, because the game doesn't have VAC.

I can't install it, it says "No installion of Cossacks II was found"
How can I extract the files?
I can't open it with WinZip neither WinRAR

BfE's version on Steam is 1.3 and I found 1.4 German patch on your site, so I think that is neither the latest version of the game.

Well, if it doesnt have VAC , then it shouldnt be much off a problem.

May I suggest , that you copy your game on to your desktop, see if it runs and then try out things. You dont want to accidently mess up your original game installment. Same goes for mods that are out there, never install them on the original but a copy.

That being said , as I expected the patch installer wont find the game since it looks in the register and the steam version has a different entry. Thank you for trying.

So manually, it requires an extraction off the data files, and as you have experienced already, you cant do this with winzip or winrar. It requires a slightly more advanced tool such as Universal Extractor or a similar program(google it).

Once you got the files, then manually copy paste them in your copy off the game on your desktop.

Maybe one off these days I'll put up an extracted version off the patch , because I know not everyone has the patience to go through this whole process.

As to the 1.4 patch you inquired about, that is a different story. It is not for Napoleonic wars, it is for Battle for Europe (1.3), a different installment. It is also an unofficial patch.
There is a russian, german and french 1.4 patch but for some reason there has never been an english. Unlike the multilingual 1.2 patch, the 1.4 patch only works with the respective russian , german and french version off the game. (and can only be installed on to 1.3) ( 1.2 is for 1.0 and or 1.1)
I'v tried to manually patch it on to the english version off BFE, it just doesnt work.
Just leave the 1.4 patch aside.

I've extracted and installed the files and the game is working with the patch 1.2, but the half of the game is German, maybe I couldn't extract the files properly. (I was a bit confused what extraction I should choose in Universal Extractor I used E_Wise.)

Thank you for your answers.

EbelAngel

So it works, thats good to know.

The installer normally lets you choose a language from the package. It contains, french, english,..and german.

Seems the E_Wise extraction option doesnt split up the language files and goes by default to german. But the english files are there in the Text folder with numbers behind them.

Just tried out the other options, they dont seem any better towards the language issue.

Perhaps, look which .txt files are the english one's, delete the other language files and rename from xxxx.txt.123 to xxxxx.txt(get rid off the number behind the.txt extension)
(If you dont see the numbers and extensions; Control panel->Folder options->View: untick "hide extension for known file types")

It will work.

Yes it works
There are some files which doesn't have English ones I guess this means it fixes something in other languages, so I deleted them.

Thank you again.

There is a problem with the patched game, it doesn't save my profile.
With the unpatched game I don't have this problem.

There is a problem with the patched game, it doesn't save my profile.
With the unpatched game I don't have this problem.

My 1.2 version doesn't have this issue, so I doubt it's related to the patch itself, but I could be wrong since it's a manual install.

It does remind me off a similar problem I used to have, I couldn't save maps in the designed folder.

It's because I was on Windows 7 and the entire game folder was set to "read only". So perhaps right click on the game folder - properties and untick "read only". See if that helps?

I tried it with the unpatched game and it has this problem, too. I said it doesn't, because I remembered I could play the whole campaign in August and September in the game and it didn't have this problem. There was an update on 09-28-2011 on both Cossacks II games, and it've made both games more buggy for me at the game starting and I've finished the campaign, so I didn't play it. There is no description or news for the update on Steam, so I don't know what does it fix.

Unticking "read only" didn't help.

I thought you meant your player profile, but you were talking about the battle for europe campaign that doesnt save your progress, right?
That is not related to the patch.

I have no idea as to what they have updated , what could have changed it, but usually, the clue is in the files, just look at the modified date off the files (when the update happened), maybe it will give you an answer.

No, it is with the player profile, I wanted to say that this problem is not realted to the patch it is realted to the update and I haven't played the game for hours since the update and I even reinstalled the game through Steam multiple times. So I mistakenly said that I got this problem with the patch. I'm sorry about it.

I've reinstalled the game after the update and their dates are almost the same, so they can't give me anything.

I would realy like to get 1.2. Can't seem to navigate to the gamefront site.Keeps navigating away. My Browser which is IE7? Gamefront says they delete files that haven't been DL in a certain time? Also what's a .rar file? How do I extract it even if I can get it. On the positive side I fixed the player profile issue.

Well, IE7 is outdated Nowadays I think. Maybe you should try with Firefox or Google Chrome.

You can also try downloading from MediaFire, I have uploaded it there, too. Here is the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?2yd77aebtuha9wh

.rar file: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAR
You can extract it with a program for example 7-Zip, WinZip or WinRAR.

I have uploaded it in a self-extracting archive version, too. You don't need any programs to extract it. Here is the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?gc8ouh2e4ipbth1
