I've seen a lot of people complaining about the translation, and I agree that is is inferior to the Aeon Genesis translation. It is completely possible to play Cave Story+ with the Aeon Genesis translation, and for those who don't know how, I'm here to to tell you how.

Step 1: Download the translation from here:

Step 2: Unzip it to the following folder:

/steam/steamapps/common/cave story+/data/base

If you might be wanting to go back to the official translation, you should probably make a backup of the base folder before you overwrite the files.

You're now playing with the Aeon Genesis translation! No more Kool-Aid references!


Here are some more things you can do, to (in my opinion) improve the game:

Curly Story Christmas Art fix (Alpha):

Make a backup of the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\cave story+\data\CurlyStory\mod

Download my work here (includes new sprites I handmade):

unzip and paste the contents of the folder in the following location:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\cave story+\data\CurlyStory\mod

Overwrite when prompted.

Curly Story with old graphics:

Go to the following folder
/steam/steamapps/common/cave story+/data/CurlyStory/mod

Here you will need to replace the MyChar.bmp with this one:

Next you will need to replace the new graphics with the old ones.

Download this file:

and unzip it to /steam/steamapps/common/cave story+/data/base, and replace the files. If you will be wanting to play on new graphics at any point, you should back up this folder before you replace everything.

You can also make custom combinations of new/old graphics. For instance you could just replace the /steam/steamapps/common/cave story+/data/base/npc folder, which would leave the HD environments and such intact, but replace all the characters/enemies with their original sprites.

Convert save file from original Cave Story to Cave Story+ (requires use of a hex editor)

Step 1: In Cave Story + make a save file in slot 1 on the difficulty you would like to play in (normal recommended, since that is what the original cave story was in)

Step 2: Download a hex editor if you don't have one (I recommend this one: http://www.softcircuits.com/cygnus/)

Step 3: Open your Profile.dat from the original Cave Story, and copy the entire data (up to 00000600)

Step 4: Open your Profile.dat from Cave Story+ and paste the data from the original Profile.dat by highlighting up to the fourth "00" on line 00000600

now save the modified Profile.dat and you will have your old data in slot 1.

Change difficulty of a save file:

Step 1: Download a hex editor if you don't have one (I recommend this one: http://www.softcircuits.com/cygnus/)

Step 2: Open your Profile.dat (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\cave story+) in the hex editor

Step 3: Edit the following lines
00000610 - if your save is in Save Slot 1
00000C30 - if your save is in Save Slot 2
00001250 - if your save is in Save Slot 3

to be "00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00" For Normal Mode
or "04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00" For Hard Mode
or "02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00" For Easy mode

now save the modified Profile.dat and play the game.

Have fun.

Some of the translation differences in this really made me frown, so I'm glad to have the translation that I'm used to.

That only translates the dialog, you could include the items' name etc... that are in other .tsc files
Also the stages names are the same for example, they are stored in stage.tbl on the plus version, you probably can change them with an hex editor or something like that.

I don't want to sound like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but if i just wanted the text files as they are i just would copy them from the free English version.

I hope that someday someone cleans it up (like removing the "="s etc...) and makes a complete good transition. And of course adapt it for the Curly Mode, but that's maybe too much.

Might exist some willing great fan that might do it in the future.

thanks for the heads up MrSomeGuy, I didn't realize that those things weren't translated.
I've edited the stage.tbl file to change Bushlands to Grasstown, if there are any other stage names to change let me know.
The fixed translation is uploaded, and will now change all item names and descriptions, as well as changing Bushlands to Grasstown.

As for Curly Story and the = signs around item names I might edit those myself at some point, it's just kind of time consuming to do because of the clunky tools available to edit .tsc files.

Alright, fixed it from Blood Stained Sanctuary to Sacred Ground and... I removed all the = signs around item names!

Should be fully done now, unless there are other stage names to change.
I may attempt to change Curly Story's translation at a later date.

For some reason it isn't working. I'm moving the file into the correct folder, but I still have the Nicalis translation.

This may sound obvious, but did you unzip the .zip file and overwrite all the files it asks if you want to overwrite?

Well done the save file conversion and it works but when defeating the core for the 1st time achievement did not unlock, using the agp translation you gave... :/ or something I did wrong?

I just wanted to thank you for this. I recently started up Cave Story+ and, although the HD graphics and (to an extent) the music keeps the spirit of the original, I thought the translation was completely haphazard. Maybe it's because I originally played using Aeon Genesis' translation, but this official one seems to have no charm at all. This fixes all that :)

I can confirm "Heart of the Island" cheevement is broken w/ using the translation. I verified my cache to revert to kool aided translation and fought him once again (The 1st core encounter). Then unlocked the cheevy afterwards :) now back to the good translation. Will keep you updated if there's something amiss.

I can't seem to find why "Heart of the Island" won't unlock, I did just upload a new version a few hours before your comment, but I don't think I changed anything that should affect that achievement. If anyone else doesn't get it with the latest version, let me know, otherwise I'll just keep seeing if I can find any mistake.

I'm definitely interested in that. Personally I was thinking I would just keep the new dialogue that was added for Curly, and replace all of the dialogue that isn't exclusive to Curly Story with the Aeon Genesis version, but I take it you're rewriting all of the Curly Story exclusive lines to be more fitting with the AG translation?

Yes, I am rewriting the Curly exclusive lines, but I've often had to restructure or rewrite other parts of the dialogue. Everything is written with Quote's silent requests in mind, and Curly's new lines were just shoehorned in, and typically do not fit in the context.
At any rate, here is the first decent alpha. I'm sure there are bugs; this is unfortunate, but I know little of what I'm doing. I am filling the role of linguist, not programmer. I apologize.

The alpha is free for anyone to do what they want with, including further modification or repackaging. In particular, it would make sense to package with the Quote Story translation, once debugging is complete. If modifications are needed or desired, however, I would be happy to do what I can to change things.

One last thing... I changed the character sprite sheet. I simply get sick of Curly running around with her mouth open all the time. The file (MyChar.bmp) is entirely optional, though.

EDIT: To reiterate, there are a number of bugs at present. They will be fixed as time presents itself.

Can someone explain to me where I'm supposed to find the line "00000610"? The rows don't go up that high, and that string of characters doesn't show up anywhere when I search for them.

You should be able to scroll that far down in a hex editor. Did you already make a save in Cave Story+ to replace with the data from the original? If not, give that a try.
There is also an original to Cave Story+ save converter around the Cave Story fan forums, which will probably be easier for you.

thank you so much! i was on my second gameplay to beat the sacred grounds but i spend my life pot and have 40 health, i've tried at least for 3 hours until now... i think is almost impossible (for me)..
now i changed my gamesave to try again on better conditions

ps.: thank you for translation too, i've changed before begin the second gameplay, is much better

ps2.: i've tried the converter, but not work.. after converted my gamesave was empty

Odd, the instructions should work (although they might be hard to follow). Or perhaps the Christmas update or something may have changed the save file structure?

thank you so much! i was on my second gameplay to beat the sacred grounds but i spend my life pot and have 40 health, i've tried at least for 3 hours until now... i think is almost impossible (for me)..

I'm glad I was able to help you. Beating the Sacred Grounds is a real challenge even with full health + life pot, I can't imagine how hard it would be with 40 hp.

Im betting they added a check to see if the file was changed at all. If i change any hex value, then revert the change, and save, it gives me save corrupted

Ah, that would make sense since you could unlock all the achievements instantly if you abused that ability.

for some reason when I apply the translation change it still gives me the official translation. Is there a way to force it to retain the fix?
