View Full Version : Are There Any Good Engine Mods for Wolfenstein 3D/Spear of Destiny?

So I'm pretty familiar with downloading user-made game engines for older games like Doom and Quake, but I was wondering if anything like that has been done for the old Wolfenstein games. I don't have time to do an in-depth search tonight, but when I did an initial search on-line, it didn't seem like there was much out there. Basically, I would like to run it in a more modern engine; the extremely jerky animation puts me off of playing it in a DOS emulator in its original incarnation. I'm not looking for a total conversion or highly updated graphics or anything, just something to run the game in to where the animation is smooth and things play more like they do in the original Doom, for example. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Newwolf. There are texture packs too but I don't think the whole trilogy has been finished. The 1st episode is completely done but it doesn't play the ending animation properly. It looks great though.

I was finally in the mood to give NewWolf a try, and it works great. It was exactly what I was looking for; I've played through several levels on Wolfenstein 3-D now. I did run into a curious bug, though: My character is stuck in Always Run mode, so I have to hold Shift down to get him to walk. (Ha, I just found that you have to use the console command "allwaysrun off" to fix it; no, that's not a typo, the developer misspelled "always".) Anyway, thanks for turning me on to this mod, it works almost flawlessly.

Okay, so as I continued using NewWolf, I discovered that it is not even possible to complete Spear of Destiny properly since none of the story transitions work. I didn't realize that the final stage was supposed to transition immediately into the final battle, without a final elevator. As such, I got stuck after defeating Death Knight.
The only way for me to proceed to the final battle was to use the cheat "map 21" to skip to that level and then use "goobers" to give myself the keys and weapons I had from defeating Death Knight. Of course, once I finally defeated Angel of Death, I couldn't watch the ending (I found it on YouTube).
Having to view the end-of-episode stories on-line in the original game was one thing, since you apparently have to start a new game each time you finish an episode like you do in Doom, anyway. But not even being able to finish Spear of Destiny legitimately because NewWolf won't transition to the final battle was super annoying. (As far as I'm concerned, I beat it; I only used cheats to compensate for that horrible bug.)
Since NewWolf is no longer being developed, are there any other engine mods for the Wolfenstein series that DO progress properly? If I play the games again in the future, I would rather not have to deal with that again.
