The second game

Can I play the second game without playing the first one and understand what's going on without missing too much info?

Or will I understand it much better if I do play the first one and the second isn't worth getting without the first?

There are lots of references to the first game but i think its mostly just in jokes and such, should not affect gameplay much in my opinion. Since the hero gets hero's amnesia early in the game and has everyone explain whatever is needed.

(making fun of the way sequels tend on dump loads of information on players during the start on what happened in the previous game)
