I beat the first level on the first try but I can't beat the second. I've tried more than ten times, I usually get to the Lady of the Lake boss but can't beat it.

Is there an easier way to beat it? Besides multiplayer.
Is the beam or gunner better for it?

Gunner requires some practice to get used to its special, so beam is your best bet.
Use vaunt when availabe and try keeping it alive by taking more gold. Dont press vaunt again unless to save yourself, as it disables vaunt bar for a while.

I'm having a heck of a time with this game too - this is my first shmup and maybe my last. It just seems that dying after only one direct hit is a bit ridiculous without a save option. I even tried playing with two ships and a mouse in each hand but that didn't go to well - lol...

On most shmups you die with one hit, but only on Jamestown you die if you get hit in the center. And the levels are too short to need to save in the middle of them, trust me.

Its all about practice and learning about how ships work, especially the vaunt feature.

If you use your ship's Vaunt, you can shoot down most of the projectiles that enemies fling at you (depends on the ship. Works with Bean, not with Charge.) Additionally, when you active Vaunt, a protective force field surrounds your ship that will block out nearly everything. Activate it again and you'll get another force field, but lose the bonus damage.

Use vaunt clear a path in front of you, then dash forward to avoid damage coming from the side. Additionally, a full charge on the Charge ship will kill everything but the bosses in one hit. Use it to your advantage and blast through the baddies!

Thank you guys! I really thought I sucked at this game when I couldnt beat chapter 2 on difficult with the charge ship, but now I'm satisfied.

Well if you are having trouble with this game then I you definitively shouldn't try other games in this genre. Usually in this genre you don't have levels that you can retry. You beat the entire game with your one set of lives or start over and try again.

The thing new players tend to mistake when dealing with the bosses is that you want to alt-fire like a mofo. Not only does it massively increase your damage output, it makes your maneuvering that much more precise. Alt-fire with Vaunt active on the default ship rips through phases 1 and 3 of that boss in record time.

Other than that, the tricks to boss 2 are basically using the shadows in the water to pre-judge where the targets are going to appear in phase 2 and (if you're having that much trouble dodging) remembering that you can knock out the green fungus in phase 1/3 to reduce incoming fire.
