Before I buy myself and two friends The Ship in the winter sale, I'm wondering how active it is anymore, will we be able to find a match or is it practically dead?

Prior to the Steam holiday sale, it was dead. But the game was recently acquired by a different company, and they gave 2 free copies of The Ship to every one who purchased the game in the past. Because of this, many, many people now have the game, and the servers are hopping. To my amazement (have had the game for about 3 years), the game has been revived.

I definitely recommend grabbing it, unless you can trade for a copy floating around (I have an extra copy myself).

This game is a blast. I bought it at launch and loved it. I highly, highly recommend.

The top four servers are Australian, the rest are US, etc. Just look at the "humans" list.

Looking at his pic it shows that the game is region filtered.
I live in Holland and these are the servers for me at 13:46
