Why?

Why not?

I don't actually own this game. Came here to see what the buzz was about.

The first thing I noticed was the communication of the developer. Which I can appreciate.

Granted, Universe Sandbox does not have a massive fan base and a million threads he still takes the time to talk to the people who do have issues and questions here on the Steam Forums.

So, here's a thread appreciating Dan Dixon and his communication.

Edit: In addendum, he has the perfect name for an appreciation thread. Alliteration is key.

Wow. Thanks. It's been a pretty exciting day with sale which means a surge in posts, questions, and new users.

Because of everyone on Steam who's bought a copy I find myself in a position to dedicate (at least) the next few years of my life to making Universe Sandbox even better.

I've already hired two developers who are much better programmers than me and am beginning the search for an artist and (perhaps) another developer with an astronomy background (who knows more about astronomy than me).

We've already begun on a major rewrite and overhaul of the game which we plan to give away to everyone who's already bought as a free upgrade (edit: the next version will not be a free upgrade - read a full explanation (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3008969)). Look for a more stable game, better graphics, and better collisions sometime next year (edit: also not true - new release date is sometime in 2013.

It's my favorite thing I've ever done and I'm so thankful to everyone for helping make this possible.

Just bought the game.

Reduced the Sun's mass. Earth flew out of orbit. Felt like a God.

Thank you Dan Nixon! :D

Indeed he's awesome, I've seen plenty of other help threads and all of them have gotten their issues resolved without any delay.

Good job!

I came here looking for feedback about the game because it was on sale, it looked cool, and I was tempted to get it. After seeing the way the dev helps people and supports his game the way Dan has, its a no brainer to buy it. I will gladly give my money to a good indie dev vs a one of the big game companies that churn out the games.

Same here, came to the forum earlier to check how difficult the achievment was, I wasn't too sure about buying the game since I have a lot of them that I haven't played. Then I saw how much the developer was involved with the community, that's when I decided to give it a try. This kind of attitude it's what you always expect from developers but you rarely see. I'll check from now on whatever Dan has to offer, consider myself a supporter.

The day I bought this I went out to a bar with some friends when I got a ride home due to being under the influence I decided to play this game. The tutorial was easy to understand and I was simply blown away by what I could all do inside the game.

I prolly watched the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies collide at least a dozen times, and made Jupiter heavier then the sun and watched everything collide. The very next weekend I showed off this game to all my friends with a single earth and 100 moons circulating around it. I then showed them all you could mess with each moons gravity individually. They were sold on the game and bought it less then an hour later.

I love what Dan has given us and I would gladly support any future work from him.

I played the demo and loved it. I finally bought the game during the Summer Sale and I have had plenty of fun with screwing around with the solar system simulation, like altering the gravity of the dwarf planets in order to see what chaos would ensue :p, etc.

I haven't gotten a whole lot of playtime into it, though, mostly due to a huge backlog. I'm looking forward to the new update(s), though

It has been a few months and I'm displeased about this being on the second page.

Dan Dixon is extremely active and helpful to the people on this forum. More appreciation to him.

Have a slice of my appreciation. Devs that listen, let alone re-invest in the way Dan is doing with Universe Sandbox, or as I prefer to call it - 'Me Smash Galaxies Now!', are a rare breed. :)

Yep, it's always awesome when a game developer not only replies to user feedback, but also actually incorporates some of their suggestions in the game.
Looking forward to the new version too.

First thread I read in the forum had him replying to a problem 20 minutes after it was posted. I was impressed and made me all the happier I bought the game, give this thread all the bumps it can get.

I had promised everyone who owned a copy of the current version would get a free upgrade to the major new version of Universe Sandbox, but that was a year ago and many things have changed. The new version has become more complex and costly than originally conceived and the project now employs five people full time. I think the promise has handicapped the long term future of the software and so I’ve decided that the new version will no longer be a free upgrade for existing users.

I hope that everyone will understand this decision. It was made with the best interest of the product in mind.
Please read my full explanation in this thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3008969).
