View Full Version : Can't start game, the main menu is missing

I'm trying to get this game to work on a friend's Windows 7 computer, and it won't work. We fixed the blue screen problem, but now the Nucleosys opening video appears black (sound still works), and the menu background appears, but the menu itself is missing, so the game cannot be played.
We did not buy the game on Steam, we are used the Director's Cut retail edition from when the game was released.
EDIT: My friend is getting really upset. He has repeatedly yelled at me to uninstall the game because he is afraid it will wreck his computer. I need a solution ASAP.

This is definitely a problem with the video card driver. Just try installing the latest one directly from the vendor (i.e.: ATI or Nvidia).

My friend uses an Nvidia card and an Intel card. I updated the driver directly from the manufacturer website, and it still has the same bug.
Are there any other solutions?

Not sure I understand. It's either an Intel or an Nvidia card. I'll need to know some of your specs (Windows version, exact video card model, desktop or notebook, etc).

The specs are Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 1GB, Intel Core i5-2410M 2.30 GHz, and it's a notebook.
EDIT: I was able to install a copy of the non-director's cut version, which works fine aside from the occasional "scream.exe has stopped working" errors, oddly enough.

DC makes use of more intensive graphics, hence the more tricky requirements. The old version had more bugs but a patch was released.
I suggest you try an older version of your GeForce driver. I'm afraid there's a bit of trial and error involved here due to the extremely poor OpenGL support on Windows :(

Well, the game works fine on my ATI graphics card, so its definitely an NVIDIA problem. I been hearing complaints about those cards not working with older games.
Do you know what lines I can put it in the config file to save my settings? I like playing with slow camera speed and no alternate control, and I was wondering what functions I should use to save my settings every time I start the game, and what other functions are available (I saw "sky detail" in another thread, what does that do?).

You shouldn't need to fiddle around with the CFG file. When you save a game, your latest settings are saved. So, configure the game as you want, start a new game, and save immediately. You should be OK :)
The "sky detail" setting should be used under special circumstances and disables the moving sky effect (and possibly makes the game run faster). If everything is working well, don't bother.
