Game keeps crashing during battle to GNR

Hey folks,

I'm trying to reach the GNR building, but the game keeps on crashing at exactly the same point every time. When the Lyons Pride and me enter the first building on the way (looks like a school) it crashes every time I cross the building. Taking different routes thorugh the building didn't help.
This is the only place where the game crashes constantly so far (I'm level 14 and explored about 20 sides already). Any suggestions what to do?

edit: before someone comes up with the general fixes for windows 7 already posted in this forum: I'm using XP.

While trying to fix the issue I noticed that if I use the world map to leave Chevy Chase before entering the GNR plaza I can go on with the game. But when I return there, the game crashes after some time (about 15-20 seconds). Seems like it has to do something with a scripted event there.
