Can retail users play on steam as well?

now if i get this will it register with steam?

Most of my friends have this game and i want to be able to play with them online.

From my knowledge COD4 isn't steamworks so cannot be registered to steam.

You will be able to play with your friends whichever version of COD4 you buy.

COD4 doesn't use steamworks, you will be able to play with everyone who owns the game, steam or retail

You will have to patch the game first. Then add cod 4 as a non steam shortcut. And make sure you disable the overlay as punk buster kicks you for using the steam overlay.

Just buy it on STEAM if you want to ensure you can play with your STEAM buddies. It's the same price as BestBuy

That's not all of the other CoDs. MW2 was the first one to use Steam. CoD, CoD:UO, CoD2, and CoD4 don't use Steam.

MW2 was when Activision abandoned the franchise on the PC, with no real anti-cheat solution and massive restrictions on graphics settings and servers.

Negative. There is no functional difference between the retail and Steam versions of CoD4. The Steam version updates automatically, that's it. You still have to manually update PunkBuster, and find servers either through the browser or IP address in order to play with your friends. But Steam and retail players use the same servers and join the same way.

well, its 20$ on the store and 20$ on steam. i would advise you to trade for a 75% off cod 4 coupon. trade a 5$ game for it. then buy cod 4 for effectively 10$.

make a thread there asking for a cod 4 coupon and offer a 5$ game for it. im sure someone will accept it. like dead space 2 which is 5$ currently.
