Make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card?
If that doesn't work, try re-installing, perhaps. Never seen this before. A quick search over at AgeComm shows no posts about this.
What graphics card do you have?

a 6870 2gb. I'll try updating the drivers and see if that helps
{update} just updated the drivers and they didn't help either...

I have the same issue. Whenever I try to change my game resolution I get 'Fatal Error Reported By Game' error message. I downloaded my game few minutes ago. I have gtx460 1gb, latest drivers.

Same problem here, but only in Asian Dynasties. Works(worked) in AOE3.
Have an HD6950 1GB on 64bit Win7.

OK, I managed to solve my problem manually installing directx which is located - E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Age Of Empires 3\directx and then verifying game cache. File name - "DXSETUP". Before doing verify of files I deleted completely age of empires game settings folder located - C:\Users\username\Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3. I'm not sure why steam didn't updated my directx files automatically. Now I can change my resolution and other graphics settings.

I had the same issue however none of the above worked for me.
I did find an alternative solution however, ran the game>> alt+enter for windowed mode(may crash but don't worry)>>run game again(should be windowed now)>>change resolution>>happy dance. I run windows 7 64 bit and this worked like a charm, if you change it to the resolution of your desktop you cant even tell its in windowed mode.
