Skyrim has this very detailed setup process on how your toon looks. Then you put on a helm a few minutes later, and nobody sees your face.

Other than simply unequipping your helmet, is there somewhere to simply not display it?

Nope:( Tried for ages to find some way to do it. But since my character is so overpowered now, i choose to not use a helmet at all just for the looks. The rest of my gear is enchanted and smithed to such an extent that i don't need the helmet to survive:P

CK can fix this, but for the moment no...
in CK you can just attach all the helms to an invisible mesh that does not replace the head or hair, and problem fixed... but it's NOT FKING OUT YET!!!

WHEN Bethesda WHEN??!!!

I just use a gold and ruby circlet on my thief, and since I invested into smithing with them I can easily get her to near the armor cap with only three pieces of ancient shrouded armor. :p

there's a mod for this, look at skyrimnexus

Edit: scrap that it only works for circlets atm

I just don't wear a helmet.
I do carry a helmet with me for those boss-fights where i need every help i can get.

I've been using this for some time, with no problems.

This. If ya don't mind being less Armored, Circlets are the way to go.

If ya just plain gotta have Armor, then for Light Armor, give Scale Armor (http://images.uesp.net/8/83/SK-item-Light-Scaled.jpg) a consider, & for Heavy Armor, your only hopes might be Orcish (http://images.uesp.net/9/91/SK-item-Heavy-Orcish.jpg). & Steel (http://images.uesp.net/b/bd/SK-item-Heavy-Steel-1.jpg) Armor. If ya get really strong at Smithing, Enchanting, & Alchemy, & Perk them up hard, ya can get these all to the Armor Cap... the Steel Armor will take the most effort to pull this off.

Hope this helps. :)
