Will there be a group chat feature? I think this is by far the most important question. Just ignore all the other people asking for the beta access. I just want to know this.

Not currently, no.

Might be a memory/resources limitation thing.

That's a shame. Group chat is basically the only reason I was looking forward to steam mobile.

depends on the phone i suppose. i think newer phones would be able to handle it. you can also just purge the older messages. like after 400 messages or so as is done with irc clients.

I also second what pythagoras said. I mostly use steam chatting for the group chat we have with the community.

Here's hoping this gets implemented soon. It was the one feature I was looking forward to the most.

they should put in group chat so you can chat in one of the groups you are in, while you are out and about..

I would agree.

Imagine joining the holiday sale chat at peak hours on your phone. It would literally explode.

Why would you even go there? Or: Why would you even go there on your phone? I usually frequent a normal chatgroup like any other IRC chat would be. 12 people in there chatting up with usually only 3 people actually talking.

I really think it should be added. Give some warning sign or something if don't want to so you can protect people.

All I want is to have a multi-user conversation. I dont see how thats not possible since other IM Apps like Windows Live Messenger are capable of too.
I hope it gets added soon

I know right? IRC programs for android with lots of people chatting in it are not laggy at all and not stressful on my phone either. I don't really see the problem unless it's a steam specific problem because of the special protocol.

I agree on this. Lot of im apps use multi-chat so I think platforms are not an issue.
Of course it's not like I'm getting into wide-group chat at peak hours with the phone, but I could use a chat with 2-3 friends a time.

You can't even invite someone to a group chat on the Steam desktop client if either you or them are mobile.

I don't think this would be a memory issue. Lets say you had 1000 messages in the room that were each 40 characters. If each character was 4 bytes (for Unicode), and each message contained a 2 byte length prefix, that would be using 158 kilobytes of RAM (1000 messages * 40 characters * 4 bytes + 1000 messages * 2 bytes). 158 KB is tiny for any phone.

Only reason I can see why this would be hard to implement is making it look readable in the UI, maybe it could be capped at 5 people max.

How would you show who else was in the group chat, on such a small screen?

I spend most of my time with my friends in one large group chat because we all like to talk to each other, any support for that in the near future?

On a side panel.

Yea something like a popup panel much like the menu. And 5 people is not much. Cap it to 20 or 30. Or why cap at all. Why not just try it without a cap first? Why all the assumptions.

It needs to be exactly like the group chat on steam ATM, no limits, and if you're an officer it needs to let you action people in the app too.

My clan uses group chat to start gaming sessions.

Maybe we should turn this thread into one where you can sign it to show support.

Gtalk for android has an option where you can invite more than 1 friend to a current conversation...

It's just silly to not have group chat in this app.

Other steam apps don't have group chat either. And a beta means most of the functionalities are done but to be thoroughly tested. If it really was a beta then it should've been in here as it is such a basic thing to have. Judging by all the suggestions I don't think it has true beta status yet.

The definition of "beta" varies from company to company.

And administration functions must be implemented.

The definition of "beta" varies from company to company.

But is mostly the same or else it'll be confusing for everyone. Because how should I be criticizing this now? Am I looking at what would be alpha for other companies or am I looking at beta and they just didn't care for group chat?

Besides that I learned in school what I said about beta/alpha and all that.

Not really.

Apple's betas (with the exceptions of Siri and iWork.com) mean "This may do anything from work as intended to wiping all your data and transforming your pets into unicorns. Do not use unless you know what you're doing."

Microsoft's betas mean "It's close to done. Try it."

Google's betas mean "It's done. Use it."

Valve's betas seem to range between "We barely tested it, it compiled. Good luck." through to "This is what we're considering, what do you think?" and now "It's mostly done and going to get better. Have fun."

Bumping this because group chat for steam mobile would be great.

Steam Group chat feature doesn't seem to be added anytime soon.

The problem is
Might be a memory/resources limitation thing.

It most likely related to pretty crazy engine of mobile application, which eats enormous amount of RAM already. I feel like implementing group chat will just make app crash most of the time lol.
As the temporary solution (only for geeks) its possible to find IRC-SteamGroupChat bridge on github, so you can make an "illusion" of group chatting by IRC channel.

Having a group chat feature on a steam mobile might get confusing but would be very interesting to see how it would work out.
