View Full Version : Dustforce makes me feel like a ninja, BUT...

It makes me feel ANGRY too.

I can't hold it anymore. I love this game, I love Dustforce, I love Hitbox. But I'm very angry.

Why ?

Because the controls are a bit unresponsive ! I give you an example :

"I'm on the floor, there's no HOLE, but I can't dash ? I'm in the air, i didn't use my double dash/jump yet, but i can't make it ?"

So, what's the problem ? I have 5 or 6 levels left to SS, but now, when i'm playing the game, after 10 minutes, i do some ragequit.
I can't SS the Concrete temple (my last city one) because of that ! So I'm ready to jump, I dash, but nothing happens, I jump, and, you know what happens after that. No enough speed, fail. It happens to me one time on three.
In that level again, there's a moment when you have to stay in the air to hit the trashblocks, then, you have to dash to pass over the pikes ground.

moefihoifhsefuheozuifhofh^ùpfishf, that was just failed. If I did my double dash/jump, i should have seen it (the animation is different !)

Damn that I love this game. But i'm tired.

I'm too tired. :(

There are a few hidden bugs that are cropping up. If you're certain you should have been able to dash and you didn't, you can record a video and post it for the devs to hopefully fix.

Also, if you're getting that angry and tired and worked up over a game, you may want to play it for 15-20 minutes at a time and take breaks in-between. It'll be a lot less frustrating, and it's easier to improve after taking a break and coming back to it.

hahaha, yeah I know, but with 15-20 minutes on these levels, you don't make a step. :\

I didn't see that problem with the other levels, because they were more easy. But now, I have to be a true ninja, and the problem appears. Damn. Maybe I'll do a video for this problem.

That's bad, because i love this game. I spent 24 hours on it, in total. When i don't like games, i'm playing for 30 minutes and I stop.

:( So i'll take a break, i'll take my vacuum and i'll clean up my bedroom. No pikes, no holes, no problem. Hahahah :D

Two possible reasons:
When you jump from an edge, the game sees it as an air jump so you wasted your air move but since you seem to know what you're doing, here's another reason from personnal experience: your keyboard (if you're using one).
Yes, your keyboard, or atleast mine seem to not respond to certain combinations of keys, ♥♥♥♥ing up some of my moves.
For example, when holding two arrows keys (for diagonal movements or something), I can't press D. Depends on keyboards but it could be the reason.

Damn, maybe this is that.
Yeah, I know i didn't waste my double because I was far from the edge (If we count with blocks, i'll say... 4 blocks from the edge, with that distance, I normaly can make 2 dashes)

So, maybe it's a keyboard problem, I will try with another key config or a pad.

Thanks Krag ! (I know you're french, ahahah.)

This is called key rollover, and is actually a very common problem. Most keyboards will only register a certain number of keys being pressed at once from certain areas of the keyboard. The price of the keyboard does not necessarily correlate with more robust registration, either - even some very expensive, gaming-oriented keyboards suffer from severe rollover problems.

It can be frustrating to do, especially once you have muscle memory already burned in, but you may want to try shuffling your keybinds around. I use WASD for movement, LShift for dash, and the number pad for jump and the attacks, which works very well for me.

ahahaha ya I noticed this so I always do my research before I buy a keyboard.

Here is the board I am using currently:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823109191&Tpk=Microsoft%20sidewinder%20x4

It boasts up to 26 keys held at once without problems.... I've tried to get it to mess up by holding more keys than that, and I haven't noticed any problems.... Although 26 keys is quite a bit, not exactly sure of a situation when I would need more than that.

EDIT: That being said I feel this game was made for use with a controller, so I used my 360 controller.

lol quite a lot Giga finisher in this thread :D

There are a few games where the keyboard rollover can severely hinder the controls, thats why i'm using the 360 controller like Hyakitaki.

Except for a few problems with the gamepad, i'm quite pleased with the experience and im eagerly awaiting the Level Editor and Level Pack to stop my craving for more Dustforce :)

Thank you for the explanation, I did some researches and tests with my keyboard and the ♥♥♥♥ep up combination is two arrow keys and Z (aka W on QWERTY keyboards) plus D or Q(A).
This makes me wonder if it wasn't done on purpose to sell "gaming keyboards" because several games use arrow keys plus WASD like The Binding of Isaac.

I never really ran into issues with rollover on my keyboard personally, but it does come up and because I love keyboard controls and don't want to risk it, I just play on this.

(Hit Box playing Hitbox!)

Same feel, but no worrying about whether or not a button combination will mess up my inputs. It's a pretty game specific controller, but it works with Dustforce just fine.

OK. I'm READY.

Just SS'd Concrete Jungle. This is not a game problem. I think this is a hardware problem. Maybe i'm just too speed for my keyboard, so the dash doesn't count sometimes.

Just played it 20 minutes at this moment, and SS'd my level. Now i'm ready. Beware, dustforce, i'm coming back !
