Maybe this will help you, but I think issue is on server end. Maybe they ran out of keys because it was on sale for probably the first time.

I believe this is the problem as the same error happens to other games when they run out of keys. Now why they sell games they do not have keys for is another question.

Yeah, but you could save yourself $13.21US if you get the "upgrade" to Black Shark 2. Of course, you still must have BS1 on your system (and activated?) first.

That's what I did - cost me only $25.50AU to get BS2 in the end :)

I'm not too bothered. This happens occasionally (most likely means the sale was a big hit, which is never a bad thing) and Steam pretty much always sorts it out.

The relevant staff is on it. I don't know what the actual issue was, but whatever ED can do to help fix this, they're doing it as we speak. Hopefully it will be resolved soon. (Probably not tonight - it's almost midnight in russia.)

I don't fully understand how the innards of Steam's system works (ask me about the SF system used on ED's other sales channels and I'll know, but Steam is a bit mysterious), but hopefully it was indeed just a case of sales outstripping expectations. Doesn't make any more fun for those of you who were affected of course, but at least I can say you're not being ignored.

I opened a ticket with Steam support about two days ago and I just now got a response.
They pretty much told me I needed to re-install Steam, which I stupidly did.

If they tell you to delete Steam, do not do it because it's not an issue with your computer.

Why can't support people ever actually listen to what your saying and give a real answer?!
Not once has an automated/scripted response resolved my issue.

EDIT:
I was looking on ED's forum and found that apparently they have submitted new keys to Steam.

This is what I got from ED:
Steam version of BS1 is provided without serial number because it doesn't need it.
My advice is to contact Steam and ask them for a refund of copies that you've bought to your friends. Or you can ask them to relink the purchases to another accounts (I think).
Anyway this issue should be addressed to Steam support.
Good luck with solving this problem. We are sorry that we can't help you with this issue.
Best regards,
Eagle Dynamics support manager,
Andrei Ustinovich

I also bought it for two of my friends so we could play together.

Steam is aware of the issue and requested new keys from the publisher, I was told from support. Strange that InTheCatBoxAgin was told there is no key by ED support. Maybe that's only when the disc is purchased directly from ED. Everything on Steam has keys to authenticate I believe.

Generally with tech support until there is enough trouble tickets to generate a red flag they have to assume it's on the user end. But they are in fact aware now.

I think the difference is ED doesn't require keys for Black Shark regardless of format. But that you need a Steam specific key to activate the game on Steam and hence Steam needs to fix it.

EtherealN
02-02-2012, 06:07 PM
Mykpfsu: Incorrect. Non-Steam BS1 uses SF ProActive with keys (but no driver).

I believe the confusion re support is caused by the fact that this is pretty much the first time ED support staff has seen something like this (they have no real power over this system from what I gather, thus I suppose they weren't familiar with it), thus the confusion. Fact however is that new keys have been provided (there was some delay in ED getting notice through channels, from what I gather, but I don't know exactly how that works. They sent them out as soon as the relevant staffer was informed). I don't know what timespan Valve needs to get them into the system on their end, but they have them. So hopefully they'll be able to send them out to you guys ASAP.

The Developer, ED, has already made a move - through giving Valve new keys for Valve's system. Unfortunately, after that, there is nothing more ED can do beyond perhaps complaining to Steam that things aren't happening fast enough. :P

The chain of events, as I have understood them, were this:

1) Steam Sale starts, Steam runs out of keys.
2) It is two days and midnight in Moscow before relevant ED staff were informed.
3) ED issued new keys to Steam the day after that. (Feb 3rd.)
4) At this point I assume someone at Valve has to press a button somewhere to dispatch those keys.

I find the system confusing and may have misunderstood something, but that's my rough idea of what happened and where things are.

This is purely Steam dragging their feet, in a couple ways.

It's nothing new. Surely some of you guys, being Steam customers, have seen this with one or two other games before, as I have. They're not very quick about fixing things, from what I've seen. Be happy you received a copy & paste reply from their CS within a couple days about how they'll look into it (sometime).

They'll eventually get it fixed, just gotta wait their snail's pace out. Eagle Dynamics looks to have been on top of things from their end, once informed, thanks to Ethereal.

Well, charging of cards is an automated system. There's not some guy sitting there processing every single payment manually. The difference is between automated and not automated, and it's a huge difference.

Also, I would just remind you that such trickery with cards is legally classified as fraud and can land you with a year or two of prison time to serve. ;)

Same here, "failed to contact key server".
I don't recommend resetting Steam. They told me to delete everything except Steam.exe and Steamapps folder, then reboot. It took Steam all night to re-check itself! 8(
That might be because my Steamapps folder is 640GB I suppose. Finally rebooted and am still getting the same error. As somebody else has mentioned, this error happened before with a couple of other games, but it didn't take this long to fix.

What mainly gets to me about problems like this is, with all the piles of money that Valve must be making with Steam, they still can't just hire a few people who scout the Steam Forums once a day for possible major showstopper problems.

My point exactly... It´s just plain iresponcible to leave the costumers hanging witout any explanation or feedback and wondering when/wether the product we´ve payed will be available to us.

It´s like buying a car, but you find out, that the key will be perhaps delivered sometime later... maybe - nobody knows, nobody tells, nobody cares. It´was a sale anyway. Was I beeng riped-off?

It was really more of a joke. They could trace the IP to show the transaction came from your house so it wouldn't work anyways (not to mention Steam would remove it from your library). Though its interesting to see how many people think Steam should process stolen credit cards.
Though its no more fraud than knowingly selling a product to a customer which doesn't work. Hence fraud is exactly what Steam is engaged in right now. Being that its over state lines they're engaged in a federal offense.

I'm stuck with the same issue as everyone else here.

I started with DCS A10C in August, and have since dumped around $2k into a new PC, monitor, and Thrustmaster setup (ain't addiction great? :)) and all I wanted to do was give Black Shark a try. The sale seemed like a godsend.

Still not working for me.

Here's my thought for the day however. On DCS's site, the download size for Black Shark is about 2 GB. When I downloaded Black Shark after the sale from Steam, the size was something over 4GB.

The size of Black Shark 2 on DCS? 4.6 GB.

I'm wondering if this whole thing is caused because Steam is sending out BS2 instead of regular old BS?

So, optimist that I am, I'm willing to wait it out and see if Steam accidentally gifted me an upgrade. If this isn't the cause, perhaps a decent way of apologizing to us all is to upgrade us free?

I think the last time I had a problem like this was with F1 2011. They gave me the run around for a couple of days then it was sorted. The only game that I never got to play, at least online, was Shattered Horizons. I eventually got to play the single player game about a year later when they added that feature. I never found out who was to blame, because Futuremark blamed Steam and viceversa.

Well, this time, we know it's on Steam. ED sent 'em a big batch 'o keys, once they found out what the problem was. Nice to know at least someone's watching out for us!

this is not the first, nor the second neither the third SAME situation happens WITH ME... but every time it happened, it took steam like two or three days at maximum and then boom there was my key...

but this is ridiculous, more than a week to give the users the damn key

it sounds so much as a scam that if it wasn't Steam i would have canceled my payment looooong time ago, but since it's Steam, you can't even do it, cuz if you do, you lose your entire account, they suspend it until they got their money back :mad:

I think the only issue I've had in the past was with a FUEL (racing game) sale. Got it solved in less than 2 days though, and that has always been the case (1-3 days at most) with every other issue I've heard of.

7 days is insane.

if i only knew that there was already an existing and long-time-released and non-steam NEW version of Black Shark i wouldn't even dare to buy this old version.

although it was cheap i know, but can't even play it, hahahahhaha, whats the point in buying an OLD-version non-playable version of a game? hahahahha

Galf506

it's not non playable and I think the new black shark offers little difference, except that you can play with owners of DCS A-10C.

It's just a steam ♥♥♥♥ up, the game is fine.

Steam have just asked me to send them a screenshot, so I have. A screenshot of Steam saying "failed to contact key server" WTF!!

This is fairly unprofessional of Steam to have no official response as of yet. They've lost many sales from their lack of communication.

I myself have considered requesting a refund, but then I'd lose the discount on the three copies I bought. :(

If this continues for the rest of the week, I'll be very shocked and disappointed.

I got a response back stating to right click and perform the verfication process....did that about 5 million times and still getting this error....

My response back from support was:

"Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

The \Steamapps\ folder and Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer."

And guess what? It didn't work! I've got 40 games in my STEAM library... but this is by the worst experience I've had with STEAM. They should at least come out with an official statement.

Well Steam, I'm not buying another game until this is resolved. Even if that is never. I got the dough, but there is other sites to get games from. Sorry it has to be like that.

Finally working.

Only took a week.

If it's still not starting up for you, then restart the Steam client.

Excellent news.

If you guys have any other problems with the game, feel free to come over to the ED forums ( http://forums.eagle.ru ), it sees a bit more traffic than the Black Shark forum here at Steam so you might get help a little quicker.

Thanks for helping out Ethereal.

Who knows how long it would've taken Steam to fix this if you hadn't been checking the forums here.

Still not working, no cd key no nothing. At this point I want my damn money back, but they won't even respond to that.If you use several Steam accounts, be sure you are connected to the one from which you bought the game.

If you are using the right Steam account, then contacting Steam Support is the only option. When did you send your ticket?

I have sent three tickets asking for a refund and they keep sending me the same stupid message about right clicking the game and getting the key code. I give up on these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s and there ♥♥♥♥ty customer service. I will never buy another game from them till they give me my refund like I have asked for 3 ♥♥♥♥ing times.
