Game going to force us to get Origin accounts? I plan on buying this game, but if it forces me to get Origins, I'm going to get a console version.
(Apologies if this has been answered already.)

I'll answer your question with a question:

Did the requirement for a Steam account prevent you from playing Half-Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Just Cause 2, Dungeon Siege 3, et al?

Supposedly the Steam version does not have Origin but you will need to login to EA servers to get your day one DLC.

@alex There are many reasons not to like Origin other than the DRM aspect. They are attempting to create a monopoly for PC DLC. If you look at their prices they almost never go on sale and when they do are never as good as Steam sales. Furthmore I don't want my credit card information added to another site.

I bought Batman: Arkham City for $25 when Steam was selling it for $50. Loyalty to huge corporations is for chumps, because they have ZERO loyalty to you.

I have a origin account for BF3...

Several games I have bought on steam that require an EA login show up on Origin as if I bought it from them...

Alice, BFBC2, Crysis 2...

I am assuming this will be the same... making an EA account IS making an origin account...

If you feel the need to have it now then suit yourself. You had a choice. I bought Skyrim from Amazon because I already was a customer and had a credit for $20. I won't support EA creating a DLC monopoly so if they require Origin I'll just buy a used 360 version.

It's an EA account. Which has predated Origin by some time. The same thing you use for Battlefield back to 2142, Command & Conquer games back to at least 3 (may have used Gamespy before that), either Dead Space, either Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, or a ton of games I never played.

Exactly. Nothing new.
People protesting BF3, ME3, or KoA due to Origin accounts probably already have log-ins, and should realize that it isn't too far off from Steam.

Not only that, but any competition to Steam is a good thing. If Valve obtains a near-monopoly with Steam, that's bad for gamers. It means they have no incentive to provide competitive prices or decent customer service. They can do whatever they want.

Honestly, you WANT Origin, Impulse, Direct2Drive, and GOG to succeed. But not that OnLive crap. That can just meet its evolutionary doom.

The game is being published on Steam by a different publisher - 38 Studios not EA - this is shown at the bottom right of the store page (http://store.steampowered.com/app/102500/) for the game under 'Game Details'

An EA login has been included so that people can unlock certain items if they wish to, and be eligable for the ME3 items for playing the demo - as EA provided the demo. However on the Steam version you can click the X to close the EA login and select an opt out button if you wish - as I did.

From this thread (http://forums.reckoning.amalur.com/showthread.php?2167-Reckoning-Available-Now-on-Steam%21) post by Big Huge Games community manager over on their forums

Do I need to register the PC version of Reckoning with Origin prior to play? Does that require the Origin client if I purchased Reckoning on Steam?

All PC versions of Reckoning, except for the Steam version, require a one-time authentication through Origin and the Origin client. If you purchase Reckoning through Steam, you only need to authenticate the game through Steam.

Quote: "If you purchase Reckoning through Steam, you only need to authenticate the game through Steam." Seems this guy is the BHG 'community manager'.

Not clear if the non-Steam version needs Origin running, or just the one-time authentication as Muse stated (see posts later in same thread). If the latter, then non-Steam actually seems quite attractive (no background client, no worries re offline mode).

Edit: Kiya got post in 1st. Oh well.

Have to agree with this. Already feel too dependent on Steam as it is.

I prefere beeing dependent from Steam than having a ♥♥♥♥load of DRM such Origin, GFWL on Steam or having a lot of games separate on 47593475 Client.

And Steam still offer good price with their deal, i'm getting used to buy game shorty after release with a good discount on it.

EA has already stated that Origin will become the exclusive point of sale for all PC DLC. So you will not have any options in that regard.

So, they're competing with Steam. And GFWL. And whoever else sells DLC for their games.

Where can you buy Dungeon Siege 3's Treasures of the Sun for PC? Oh, only Steam? How about the various Just Cause 2 DLC? Steam again.

It's called competition. EA doesn't want to have Steam selling their stuff, and taking a slice of their pie. Valve isn't about to sell Half-Life 2 Episode 2 (or 3, whenever that comes out (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Valve%20Time)) on Origin or Impulse, right?

Their past experience would contradict everything you are saying. Origin is also not competition, they aren't providing competition. EA Games refuses to provide competitive pricing for their DLC via other distributors. So don't be throwing around the "Competition is good for the consumer" when EA Provides nothing of that with specific aspects of their business model. Origin itself is so small and insignificant, it can't be serious competition. Especially for Steam that EA Continues to withhold games so they can continue to be Anti-Competitive with their DLC. Irony at it's best.

Yes, Valve does sell all their games on Impulse. Including all the Episodes, which are not DLC. Maybe you should take a peak at Half Life Complete. With that said, Valve GIVES away their DLC. Valve always has competitive pricing on all their games. You can't beat the pricing on their DLC because it's all free.

Really? So if I go to Stardock.com and look for Half-Life 2 and Episodes 1&2 there, I'll find them? And they won't require Steam to play?

Now you're just trolling.

And other than the original Half-Life (which may or may not require Steam with those keys) they all REQUIRE Steam. They can't be played without Steam accounts, at all.

Just as BF3 REQUIRES Origin even if you buy it at a store, D2D, Amazon, or where ever.

They're all doing the same stuff, you're just firmly attached to the testicle of Steam for some reason.

I don't care if a game is Origin enabled or Steamworks Enabled. I just want the choice to buy where I want.

Monopoly is bad for customers with Steam? You feel dependent?

Weird, that's probably because they had one for ages and it pretty much saved PC gaming. You know, because no one else cared enough to do what they did.

Short memories are short.

Prices are set by the publisher, try to remember this.

Origin is not competition, as Girlpower has already said very well.

If you want the additional demo items, pre-order items, and the content via the online pass an Origin account is required regardless of what platform you buy the game on.

Steam being excluded but so are the pre-order in-game promotional item availability.

Alright that's just fine. As long as I can play the main game, and beat it, I'm just fine. I was just curious, as I do not want to get origins due to ANOTHER place I have to sign up for, and ANOTHER place with my credit information, Just for 1 game.

Also, maybe its too soon to know, but, if I purchase the hard copy for PC, will I be able to register it with steam? I don't buy hard copies of PC games often. So I'm just curious.

I don't believe the retail version is steamworks, if you buy retail I believe you play either drm free or on origin. If you want steam integration you have to purchase it off of steam.

You can read these comments from the Amazon KoA page:

Unfortunately no, all retail copies are being distributed by EA and require Origin
