Why do I need to login to play STO? It seems obvious, but I'm already logged into Steam, so that's my account, right? Why do I need to login once more?
Also, can't I try the game without registering for an account? I don't want them to have my private information if the game turns out te be not for me.

because it is not connected to the steam login... it is just providing steam service as an overlay to the game...
Perfect world/cryptic's servers are not remotely connected with your steam login information.

The only games that use Steam's login system to pass information happens to be All Points Bulletin: Reloaded and Spiral Knights. Even with those two, APB:R requires registration outside of Steam anyway to link the accounts.
PWE doesn't provide a streamlined method to log in for any of their games at this point.

Because the servers have nothing to do with steam.
I think Perfect World would just be happy to log in with one of their account, but they seem to feel obligated to allow Cryptic at this point.
I don’t know how long that will last.
Remember that STO is a very different game from Spiral Knights and APB, larger and needs more server space and maintenance.
SteamIDS would only get in the way.

It's not so hard to generate a second database that acts as a second login/password. It's basically a hook used through Steam. "More Space" doesn't make sense as an argument against. Even then, PWE seems more reluctant to do business with Steam these days. (Rumors are Blacklight Retibution isn't coming to Steam.)
