As a newbie in the game, I don't understand the dilithium exchange. Who is actually selling C-points for dilithium? Dilithium is easy to farm, everything that you can buy with dilithium you can buy better versions with C-points. So who in their right minds would sell C-points for dilithium?

People with a crap load of C Points, People that have already gotten everything the C Store has to offer for the time being, etc etc.

Ive seen people with 16k points, w/e floats their boat.

In any case, you can buy C Points for Dil also, its not just buying Dil for C Points, which buying C Points with it is the main use.

If that is really true, then C-point prices should rocket to the 500 dil per c-point market max with the start of F2P. After all isn't the F2P concept 99% freeloaders? I think that Cryptic is actually injecting C-points into the exchange or else I don't see how it could balance out.

I sold a few points. I would rather pay a few bucks than farm Dilithium for days. It's all about laziness, and I'm pretty damn lazy.

You can only get 8K Dilithium per day. When I want something, I want it now. I would rather trade 100 points for all the Dilithium I need over logging on and doing my dailies.

I think it's a brilliant system and soemthing that every MMO needs. I would honestly still be playing WoW if I could pay someone pennies to grind out my rep and do my dailies ;).

i agree with lexinator, these who buy C coins often do it because its much faster than earning money as F2P, and you cant earn as much dilithium as you can exchanging with C coins. speaking of this, whats the exchange rate exactly?

I think the system is pretty awesome as well. In my case, I'm willing to spend a little money, but if I can get "free" C-store credits by selling my excess dilithium, even better. I tend to advance at a slower pace and have noticed I tend to have more than I really need at my current level, and I don't mind things taking a little longer to get, especially if it means costing me less RL money. :P

Last night when I was on it was around 220ish dilithium per 1 CP.

I'm curious. What are you buying with dilithium?

Honestly, you cannot buy much with dilithium. There are some gear on dilithium store granted but they all pale in comparison against all the end game gear dished out by doing STFs. Currently, dilithium only stands to buy C-points and nothing else.

Though however, you may also buy ships with dilithium, you get a free ship requisition when you rank up (except on Rear Admiral Upper half and Vice Admiral) and most players choose a ship and stick with it than waste dilithium on a ship which has a better version bought by c-points.

Dilithium serves a way to keep players returning to game daily so that they may farm it to buy whatever they want from the store. While store does not contain many goodies, people are mostly content with it.

Lifetime and Gold Accounts get 400 *free* c-points every month.
So yes in a way Cryptic is pumping C-Points into the economy.

There are MANY Ferengis who "game" the dilithium exchange,
buy cheap, sell high, repeat.

you will always see movement in the exchange, alone because of these guys.

The Players without time but lots of *throw away money* will buy dilithium rather than grind the B'Tran daily for the 500th time.
And the Players who LIKE to play the game can sell the earned dilithium if not needed any longer for C-Points.

The fun part is, every C-Point in the System is money that Cryptic already earned.
They don't care if you sell your dilithium to other players and at what price, the very OPTION to buy dilithium is just added incentive to spend $ on the game.
The players who want to grind are the ones who would not buy most of the things anyway.

some more facts:

the dilithium exchange is player driven, so when a new C-Store item is released you can see the exchange rate go up, when there is nothing for a long time the prices go down again (slowly).

but there are Limits in place
you can buy / sell 1 C-Point between 100 - 500 dilithium per c-point

what can you buy for dilithium?
pretty much everything!
for F2Pers most important are the Ships, you have to pay dilithium for your Tier 4 + 5 Ships, and if you want anything more than the default choices you need C-Points.

Also the COMPLETE high end Ship equipment is sold in a dilithium Store.
The Duty Officer System sells you some pretty good DOffs for dilithium. (this is a rather new system, and you have to unlock the different Tiers of the DOff system to unlock access to buy them with dilithium, first you get one free, then you can buy more for dilithium).

Crafting was changed so it has a "dilithium tax" (which is stupid and hopefully will be changed in the future).

...so there are some dilithium sinks in the game, i don't think enough. But that may change with any update.
The whole economy is new and was made only for F2P to work like this, i am sure there will be some adjustments in the future.

And you can be sure that they monitor the cash flow.

Unfortunately that endgame gear requires doing STFs between 5 and 40 times on 2 difficulty levels. STFs are much better now than they used to be, but that's like saying fresh snap peas are better than cooked mushy peas. :p

Unless you have millions of credits to drop in the exchange, or a very generous fleet crafter, the rare/blue dilithum store items are quite good, and certainly good enough to help you survive Normal STFs.

The #1 use for dilith in my opinion is for crafting materials. Unreplicatable Uncommons will always sell on the exchange, and fleet crafters always need them. Other items you can use dilithium on are specific ranks of Duty Officers, which is a big deal for some people.
Two of the best daily ways to grind it out are

http://www.stowiki.org/Mission:_Investigate_Officer_Reports_(Daily)

And to the OP, you shouldn't assume everyone plays video games the same way you do.

I got some free CP with my game purchase and sold a few for easy dil. I use it mainly for the doffs. But some dil gear is pretty damn nice. We must not be looking at the same thing ;-)

Alright, perhaps when I get to end-game I'll see what it's all about. Mean while, I'm hitting the 8k dilithium max in about an hour in ker'rat. With 2 chars, that's about 16k a day, which is more than I could possibly use in the dilithium store so I put most of it in the exchange.

is there anything to spend dilithium on? from what i saw mark X items arent really that costly, unless theres higher unique tiers than that. (with the only other dilithium sink is that 2000 C ship, it seems.)

Cpoints have actually gone way down with the start of F2P.

Most people will change a few over then go and buy something, then later on they've used the store and CBF farming at 220 to 1 ratio so they buy them with IRL money.

Its basically advertising.

Cpoints have actually gone way down with the start of F2P.

The day the game went F2P, I could find C-points for 202 dil each. Then the lockboxes came out, and the price jumped up to 226 and higher.
The past week, I have never seen any offered less than 219.

You are saying they used to be more than 226 each?

When you use the Exchange, don't treat it like a store. If you want to pay less dilithium for CPs. Offer. It's like the real-life stock market in this aspect. The price quoted is for the last sale. It is not the MSRP or the sticker price.

Most players just see '220 - 1' and then buy it at that price. You can put up an offer like '50 points at 200 each' and it will be posted. Probably faster to make an offer at 219 and so on.

PS I think they came close to the 500 per CP limit before.
