I recently posted a video on YouTube basically showing off the graphical capabilities of Dear Esther, I was not very satisfied with it as I just felt the tone of the video was incorrect and the quality of the video and the shots were not good enough to really show off what the game is capable of, so I went back to the drawing board...

I came up with something I am very proud of and would love some feedback on it and would really appreciate your guys opinions.

I loved this everything about Dear Esther from the art direction right down to the tiny details and the story and audio were top notch

Anyway without any further ado here is my video, make sure to watch in 1080P and enjoy it!

Thanks a lot for sharing. Great job! I thought the transitions in your first video were too fast, but this one was much better. Is there any way you could upload the original file somewhere so we could download it?

I agree wholeheartedly and I am going to upload it very soon as a video file for download so once I do I will put the link in here :)

Nice video. Some say the graphics are dated, but I think it looks gorgeous. :)

I have a whole bunch of 1080p screenshots (high quality, including tweaks), in case anyone's interested: http://steamcommunity.com/id/vittau/screenshots/?p=2&filter=app_203810.

Game looks absolutely stunning. I can't wait to get it and revisit it, its been a year or so since I played the mod.

The engine is dated, the graphics far from it, sure if you look at different games with new lighting and shaders it may come up short, but overall as a piece of artistry especially considering the engine it is using, it is one impressive piece of software.

*nice screenshots btw*

Nice work, but to be honest, from the comments and screenshots, I was expecting it to look better. There needs to be some imperfection when trying to create perfection in animation. It's the little things you don't really notice, but when they're there, you subconsciously see them. That's the problem with computer graphics; it's too easy to make things look perfect, and much harder to 'dirty' things up a bit. 'Perfect' just doesn't work.

It may seem like I'm not really explaining what I mean well, and that's the point. That's why it's so hard to achieve. One really has to study the motion of hair, for example, to even come close to know how to make it move in animation. And even then, only a select few can really master it.

Anyway, hopefully this post doesn't come off as an insult, as it's not meant that way. I just went in like a kid on Christmas, with my hopes too high. Otherwise, good work. :)

Not an insult at all, very maturely written and I respect your views, I must ask however is it the source material you are disappointed with or the way the video is edited?

If it is the way I edited it, could I ask for what you feel made it good and what you feel held it back?

Either way I hope you enjoyed it in some form, and in some ways I do agree with what you are saying, I feel the developers are limited with the engine in many respects and what they have achieved with it is in itself a big accomplishment, that being said I understand what your saying, its hard to describe but when something is too "perfect" its unrealistic.

Wow...

I almost cried at the end of the video. I remember the mod. Then, I remember my playthough with the new Dear Esther. It was just a beautiful story...

But your video is wonderful. And the music choice is great (Oh, i over-love Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult), that version is full of sadness and beauty.

I am impressed, truly.

Thanks, really.

Thank you so much for your kind words :).

I love the original song also by far my favourite version but the cover by Gus (which brings back fond memories of a certain early 90`s horror flick, bit of a horror geek one of my favourite movies is the first halloween so I apologise lol) I thought was more suited to this video as it has more of an acoustic feel and is at a much slower pace for intentional purposes.

Anyway I really do appreciate the view and the feedback and I am happy you enjoyed it and appreciated it :)

This is really beautiful, but you might want to note that it contains some spoilers for some of us who haven't seen many of the permutations (my underwater scene was totally different and I had not seen the one in this video). Lovely, lovely work though. :)

The part you are talking about is because I was using no clip, its not a scene I just shot it in a way that it looked like it so it added depth to the footage.

But thank you very much :)

I admire how long that must have taken you to upload but is that not a walkthrough of the entire game?

Walkthroughts are indeed about the same thing... However, all walkthroughts are cut between levels because if some1 only wants a specific level, they can go to walkthroughts instead of having to search it in this video. I intended this to really aprehend it as a video :) can be both if some1 really thinks this is a walkthrought. The thing is that I have already made 4 walkthroughts on Dear Esther (the 4 levels) so that's about it ^^
