Hey all,

Quick question. So I just got around to installing the new Nvidia drivers on my computer for my duel SLI'd GTX 560s. While the driver was installing, the fans on the cards suddenly got really loud. (2x fans per card, 4 in total.) For whatever reason the driver caused the fans to speed up to what almost sounds like a unhealthy level. They have since slowed back down to normal speed. So I am curious. Is this healthy for the fans to run like this? It seems like it would tear up the ball bearings in them. Has anyone else had this happen? Or am I just now now noticing what is a normal event? Sorry if this seems petty, but I just wanted to make sure that something didn't just go horrible wrong.

Thanks.

I'd of thought they'd be designed to run at full RPM.

Some of the newer video cards have drivers that will even run the fans backwards when you first start up in order to kick out any dust that might have accumulated. If you restart your PC and hear it again that could be what it is.

It's a non issue so don't worry about it. Re-installing drivers sometimes has this effect. When there's no driver to control the fan speed they will spin at 100% and return to a normal level once the driver kicks back in.

And TeKraken is right, fans are rated at a certain rpm for a reason.

I see, I appreciate it.

my ATI HD5770 was the same, it was horrendously loud when I just installed it and it didn't calm down until I had finished installing windows and the drivers were installed (lot of sweating till then I can tell you)

It depends on the manufacturer of the card. Some design the fan to be controlled by the card's bios and others use the drivers to control the fan.

So with one card you get the fans speeding up until the new driver is installed and with another make the bios will keep the fan at around 30-40%.

It'll take a long time for a fan running at 100% for it to damage the bearings so it's not worth worrying about. Its just noisy.

that's sick.

yeah that does sound good, especially if you've just given your PC a clean and knocked a dust bunny into the gpu fan - unlikely but possible.
