Hello SOL fans!

The beta version of the SOL v1.12 update is now live and we'd love any feedback you may have.

To get the beta update, please follow these steps:
Exit Steam and ensure it’s actually dead (kill tray icon and ensure it isn’t running in task manager)
Find your main Steam executable (not the SOL Exodus executable) shortcut in the start menu or desktop; right click and select properties
Append the following to your shortcut "Target" (if your shortcut is in quotes, place this outside the quotes): -beta c@lh0llund
Save shortcut then launch that shortcut, login to Steam
Beta update should begin downloading.

Once the update is done and the game launches, the new things you should see:

New "game settings" options screen which offers virtual joystick mode, game difficulty selection and cockpit view
Difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, and Hard.
* EASY: No collision damage, escape pod activated, and reduced damage from enemies.
* NORMAL: Collision damage, no escape pod, increased damage from enemies.
* HARD: Increased collision damage, no escape pod, greatly increased damage from enemies.
Your ship now takes damage when colliding with ships and environmental objects on normal and hard difficulty levels.
Checkpoints: within a mission, you can now reach checkpoints during the mission, and if you die, you restart at the nearest checkpoint. If you quit the mission prior to completing the mission, you will have to restart from the beginning at your next playsession, however.
New cockpit view should be on by default, but if for some reason it is not, you can enable it in the game settings.
Various other smaller updates, balance tweaks and fixes.

Please take a look and let us know what you think. We are particularly keen to make sure there are no bugs with the checkpoint system, so if you happen to find anything that fails to function after restarting from a checkpoint please let us know immediately.

You can post the bugs directly in this thread.

Thanks!

Dan

Just to state this explicitly: this update is still IN BETA and unexpected things could happen while using it. If you're not comfortable testing pre-release software, please don't download this update.

Thanks!

Had a brief look last night - looks good! Still need that 'toggle slide' though :)

Today I logged in to Steam without using the beta shortcut command and Sol started updating (another beta? Or is it trying to revert to the last non-beta?) I then re-logged in to Steam using the beta command and Sol is still trying to update (about 800MB). I've chosen to go with the update. Please let me know if I should cancel the update.

Great work!
Cheers,
Nick

These steps make no sense. All this does is renaming the Steam executable. Nothing happens on re-launch. Why can't we just enable "beta" for Sol exodus in Steam?

Would be nicer to enable beta within Steam, because current method leads to question of "should I now only run Steam using the target parameter?"

I created a shortcut to the Steam.exe with the "target" box:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -beta c@lh0llund

Upon logging into Steam using this shortcut, Steam immediately began downloading the beta update.

However, today I see another Sol update... but I've a suspicion that it's trying to 'update' to the last non-beta (i.e. revert) because I accidently logged into Steam without using the above shortcut.

What? Where in Dan's instructions did he say to rename the Steam executable?

Just APPEND -beta c@lh0llund in the Target field. Don't delete the whole thing.

I think that you might've missed the "right-click, Properties" bit there my friend.

Sorry - I forgot to start Steam using the target parameter, and Sol got reverted to pre-beta! (I thought it was another beta coming through).

I did play one beta game; it played brilliantly :)

Not sure the cockpit is for me (personal taste).
Difficuly levels - great! (some missions were very hard).
I think the missiles were faster - great!

Really could do with the 'toggle slide' option please :)

Excellent game - looking forward to the next update.

Regards,
Nick
