Well.. if this is true. I can't wait to see the buggiest MMORPG in history.

I just knew all these years they were secretly jealous of WoW's success.
If it's true... should be interesting to see Bethesda fall flat on their face with this. :D

I hope it isn't subscription based...I really hope that Guild Wars 2 is a huge success and that they are swayed by that model.

Oh man. The MMO genre is already dead: does anyone care about games which you actually pay-to-play anymore? Isn't that entire ideal finished with? MMOs are so boring these days, they are all the same: no depth, no adventure, no exploration, no difficulty and no fun.

They should make bluz74 the front man so the impact is cushioned by his many chins.

Definitely a MMORPG I'd try and subscribe to for a bit. I doubt anything will ever be like UO, but seeing as WoW is the only other MMO that I keep coming back to every so often (just to find it still just frustrates me after a while, as it always has), I'd welcome something potentially fresh. SW:TOR wasn't it.

The bigger question is if they're going to handle combat the same way they did in Skyrim :/ Gonna be monitoring that projects progress with a wary eye. Most likely gonna be a flop.

If they`re going to use the same engine, I`ll wait 2 years after release before even considering to buy it.

Not sure if serious? I think 10 million wow players would like a word with you. Or the two million who play the old republic...

MMOs are by far NOT dead. Just because you dont lile the genre doesnt mean everyone else hates it to.

I dont really think we needed a TES mmo though. I've played these games since I was ten and enjoyed them for their SP aspect. But I guess I could argue the same point with warcraft aswell.

I just hope this doesnt mean they forget about the original IP like blizzard did.

That attitude is highly negative and leaves no room for any improvement in the genre IMO.

If they make it non-subscription based, seperate servers to reduce over-crowding and create communities, and stick with their current class based system - I think they'll do fine. I think a lot of problems that people have coming from WoW is changing things that shouldn't be changing.

If it did happen, I hope it wouldn't be the end of SP TES. MMO's are more of a chore than they are fun these days, not to mention paid subs as well.

They might be a big deal in the single player arena but there are a lot of MMOs that have had more freedom than TES has ever offered for a very long time. After completely redesigning their mechanics and systems to work in an MMO environment they'd be left with the lore as the only thing that doesn't need changed and it really isn't really special in that department.

If you're interested in this, I'd advise you to approach it with cautious optimism. It's a lot more complicated than just adding multiplayer and being done with it -- by the end of their development of the game it might (and probably, in my opinion) not even resemble and Elder Scrolls title.

That isn't to say whatever comes of it, provided that it's true, is going to be bad. It could still be a nice game in it's own right. They do have a Mythic vet at the Zenimax MMO studio so they're not going in completely without experience. If it's Bethesda creating it themselves, though? I agree with GirlPower there for sure -- you can get by with bugs in singleplayer games, but you're compounding the issue in a multiplayer setting.

Something marvelous could be done with MMOs, but I'd prefer if MMORPGs died a painful death. Grind2win gameplay should stick to singleplayer.

Are you kidding me? Morrowind has ready made MMO combat and gameplay.

Are you kidding me? Morrowind has ready made MMO combat and gameplay.

Combat is literally just dice rolling in Morrowind with a little bit of input from your stats/skills. If it's going to have real time combat ala Oblivion or Skyrim, they're going to run into many issues and I don't see them going backwards in that regard.

What other parts of the gameplay attribute it to being ready to be an MMO? The incredibly easy-to-abuse spell, enchanting, skill, and crafting systems?

Bethesda has created some of the most out of tune systems of any game I've ever played. Sure, you can avoid abusing them in singleplayer, but it'd never work in multiplayer. People will min/max and it'd make the entirety of those systems pointless. They design their games to be about a singular hero and almost every system and mechanic follows that lead. Throwing that into an instant multiplayer setting would be disastrous.

Anyway, a nice short read from just last September. (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112727-Bethesda-The-Elder-Scrolls-Wont-Become-an-MMO) Todd's been asked this question numerous times since Everquest was in it's heyday.

I'd rather have a Coop party mode (A-la Baldurs Gate) than a mmorpg.

Sadly there is no profit in it, hence the standard mmorpg micro-transaction will slam down on this title.

Then there is the f2p route, "Play as a second class citiz- er... up to level 20 for FREE"

I honestly don't see how an Elder Scrolls MMORPG would succeed. The charm of the series is not just in the locale or the monsters, but in the characters, stories, quests, and how your character influences the game.

You lose quite a bit of that in the translation. You no longer feel like you're the one influencing the world when thousands of other players are doing the same things as well.

If anything, we should see a coop mode a la Borderlands, but I don't think I would play that. I prefer going solo.

I've said pretty much the same thing before, concerning their job postings, their IP copyrights, and their domain registries and the fact that they opened a completely new Online Development studio, and no one took me seriously.

EWWWWWW. I hope this is just a nasty rumor. People have been predicting this for over 10 years and it's always been wrong. Elder Scrolls does NOT need to be involved in yet another boring mmo grind-fest "Kill 50 elephants" time sink snoozefest.

Please stick with what you do best Bethesda and don't cave the the multiplayer goons that have to ruin everything lately with tacked on multiplayer in our previously single player games.

This would suck as an MMO, the Elder Scrolls series is a single player experience.

03-17-2012, 11:07 AM
I would prefer it if they made it kind of like the normal Elder Scrolls combined with Free roam mode from Red Dead Redemption, you know, having about 20 - ish people on one server so it won't be madness with cities filled with bunnyhopping people wearing no pants.

KuranesDreamer
03-17-2012, 11:55 AM
I really don't think an Elder Scrolls MMO would be terrible. I think they could do a good job on it, provided it's on an acceptable engine and they take care of their servers.

The only reason they have stuck with single player is because they like that method of play, and they don't also include a multiplayer component because, according to Bethesda, it would take focus off both portions of the game (single and multiplayer) and they would rather go all in and work on one experience rather than rush two modes at once. Because of this attention to detail, a huge open world MMO from Bethesda, be it Elder Scrolls related or not, would be amazing, at the very least, on paper.
