Tired of playing Tachyon The Fringe at 1024x768?
Well, I was. But there is an easy way of playing this game in almost any resolution you'd like.
Editing the game to get better resolutions is tricky and buggy, so that's no option. Thankfully Tachyon was released in a time GLIDE was way more popular than D3D. The Steam version only uses the D3D api, which is totally understandable because 3Dfx and GLIDE are long gone. But the GLIDE dll still exists in the game directory...
So why not using a GLIDE Wrapper, which itself can be configurated to almost any resolution.
Let's start:
The follwing steps were done under Windows 7 Pro 64bit with a GeForce GTX 570 and newest drivers:
1) Download the glide wrapper. The newest and by far the best ist nglide.
http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide
2) Open the nglide configuration utility and select your desired resolution.
3) Open your Tachyon The Fringe game directory and open Tachyon.cfg. Change "HW_type=2" to "HW_type=1" (2 is D3D, 1 is GLIDE) and make sure "USE_HARDWARE" is set to "1". Do not open the launcher's video config any more or it'll reset the config file!
4) Have fun playing the game at high resolutions!
This way I'm playing the game @ 2560x1600 (with black bars , so no stretching) with 16x AF, 32x CSAA under Win7 64bit without any problems. It's looking great!
Btw.: Anyone knows how to play the intro ingame? Until now I just drag and drop the tachyon.bik onto the binkplayer.exe (download the RadVideo Tools. It includes a new binkplay.exe, which can play the video in fullscreen). But still, viewing it ingame would give a better experience. And, is there no ending video?? Still need to complete the game...
