This is weird. Fight when fine on Normal mode but for some reason in Hard mode I keep running into a bug that makes it essentially unwinnable.
What happens is that for some reason a random minute or few into the fight Adol will stop responding to the platforms rising / falling when Gyalva shoots at them. They'll fly into the air, Adol will stay firmly rooted to the ground. Since you need to ride the platforms up in order to hit the guy there's not a lot you can do when it starts happening.
Dying and retrying will have the platforms working again but it keeps happening.

Yeah it happens sometimes. You can still get plenty of chances to hit him using the fire bracelet though.
It's actually not necessary to use the platforms, in fact I didn't use them at all, since I couldn't get the hang of the timing. What I did instead was wait at the far end until the boss flew down, and then attacked it.

It happened to me as well. Personally, I just kept at it and used the charged wind attack whenever he stops above me, and it would barely hit him (only a couple times) if I triggered the attack at the peak of my jump. It was slow, but I managed to win eventually. Just gotta be extra careful not to take hits.

Yes the fight is bugged in that some times on hard the platforms won't lift you into the air. The other bug I have run into on nightmare is that sometimes the platforms won't turn back over from spike to solid. No matter how many times he breathes or rolls onto one of the rows of spikes, it will simply bounce up and never flip over. Staying all spikes until you die.
This boss in particular is heavily RNG based. You just have to beat him before you hit one of the bugs.

After many Hard attempts I believe the platforms aren't bugged but are part of this crappy boss' strategy. He seems to alternate lifting only the top OR bottom row of "tiles" that form the bridge. Mercifully he always sticks to raising the same row of tiles per pass.
Basically ensure you are definitely standing on either the top or bottom row of tiles and if you arent lifted on that pass, move to the other row and you will definitely be lifted. I've had enough attempts to be 100% sure that this behaviour is consistent.
What screws me over is that he occasionally flies off to do a side to side sweep and sometimes I run to the side that he commences the attack on. Hello, unavoidable 85 damage. But hey, at least he can be damaged in the air with some consistency.
Otherwise, I hate this fight, far too much RNG (your field of vision is way too narrow, and when he goes for a full sweep, you just pray you don't run to the side he decides to attack from) and the fight goes on far too long considering it's game over if you get unlucky twice.
Edit: OK, turns out is full sweep attack isn't random, and the direction he comes from is based on the angle of his previous attack. You live and learn (or in the case of Ys, die and learn...) Still loathe the boss, mind. =p

The platforms aren't bugged. In normal mode the top row and bottom row of tiles are joined together. In Hard Mode and up they are separate. If you aren't being launched in the air you are on the wrong row of tiles.
It's actually not necessary to use the platforms, in fact I didn't use them at all, since I couldn't get the hang of the timing. What I did instead was wait at the far end until the boss flew down, and then attacked it.
The boss does not fly down in Hard Mode. The only time it would ever be at your level is when it does its spinning attack.

Actually, when he does an attack that flips the panels, look for the row that gets flipped over (as opposed to just jumping up). The row that was flipped over will be the row that gets lifted into the air.
No guessing involved at all, just need to have a keen eye. ;)
