I downloaded and installed from Steam and logged into GFWL, no key was required.
At which point was it asking for the key?
Did you have a previous beta installed?

1.just go http://www.xbox.com/en-US/ and login with your LIVE account
2.click Buy Game (FREE)
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Microsoft-Flight/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8044d5308d2
3.install and run Games for Windows Marketplace Client
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
4.login to your GFWL account and click downloads tab, select Microsoft Flight from the list and click view keys

It was right after I entered my username and password and no, I've never heard of this title until yesterday.
I followed the above poster's advice and got my product key. Then I went into MS Flight to enter it but oddly, it didn't ask for it after I logged in. I'm confused now...
Thanks though. Everything's fine now.

I downloaded it via Steam and it requested a key too so I went to the GFWL store, logged in and 'bought' it. I guess it saves the key to your GFWL account as the next time I launched the game it didn't ask for the key. I didn't need to download it again.

Steam has seems to have tried to included a way to create your GFWL GamerTag which is required for Microsoft Flight LIVE content, missions, etc. as I guess most of us are finding out the hard way.
it's in steamapps\common\microsoft flight\Setup\GFWLive
Click on the gfwlivesetup.exe and follow the steps on the screen to login or create your GamerTag.

GFWL marketplace program hangs on the splash screen for me every time. Is there no other place to view the product key it's asking for?
I wanted to get the hawaii dlc but I can't because I can't get past this product key check.

If you 'purchased' it on Xbox.com (even though it is free) then you should have a product key automatically assigned to you. You are actually supposed to get a product key assigned to you when you try to log in. If it says you don't have a key, just enter any number. It might say it is invalid, but then should populate with a real key.
You will still need to sign-in with the GFW Marketplace Client however to download Hawaii. So if that won't start then there could be other issues. If it hangs on the splash screen, it sounds like it can't talk to the back-end server to get some configuration data. Check to make sure your firewall isn't blocking it or temporarily turn off your firewall to see if that helps.

I had all kinds of trouble getting this installed. I'm still not sure I have all of the content I'm supposed to get with the key (didn't notice anything and I don't know what we're supposed to get) but I found a way around what's most likely poor connection issues on the user-end. It could just be another trendy Microsoft Application that doesn't, yet, work right...as usual. We should be used to MS stuff not working when it's released, eh? ;)
Here is what I did to get the game installed so it stops asking for the product key:
- Visit the Microsoft Update Website and make sure your computer is up to date. (I was having problems with GFWL Marketplace crashing too. I was missing a few windows updates that corrected GFWLM crashing issues)
* I still can't get the game to install through Marketplace so I still don't know what my product key is but at least I got it to finally complete the download.
- If the game is running, close out of it completely.
- When the download completes through Windows Marketplace you then have a "EHDHGSLJGFAHFLAGFHASGKSAGHGLAHDAG".cab file. Find it. You can find where it downloaded to in GWFL Market Place Settings.
- Use a file extract program like 7-zip (what I used http://www.7-zip.org) to extract the contents of the .cab file onto your computer. You can right click and choose the 7-zip menu and then 'Extract Files...' to do this. Make note of where you're extracting it to.
- When it's Extracted go to that directory, into the Content folder, and run the Game.msi file. This will install the game and include the product key.
* Running the Setup.exe asks for the key.
* I haven't tried running the game through Steam since I got it working this way, these steps install the game as a Stand Alone application. You can always add it as a non-steam game if you want to launch it from Steam.
Microsoft Friends; No, delafina, none of that helped my issues. I still can't get the game to install through Marketplace, so I have no clue what my key is. Help with that appreciated!
Wedge The Jedi, My issue with GFWLM crashing and hanging seem to be at least slightly corrected after making sure my computer was up to date. My issue with getting the download to complete, I guess (?), was connection issues. My problem with getting it installed through GFWLM have not yet been resolved although I do now have the game installed and it's no longer asking for a key.
I'm happy since the game's working! But I'd like to somehow have access to my key. I'm with handsandwich! There needs to be another way to get your key. An alternative download other then through Marketplace would be keen too! This isn't working very well. Why not send an email after the download completes as a backup in case handsandwich and I aren't the only people having the same problem?
People like myself and handsandwich would also need some kind of option that allows us to request the confirmation email to be resent so that if we lost, or didn't get, our key...we can get it.

So does this mean that even though we've procured it via Steam, we have to do it again via GFWL just to get this key?

Yep. The happy ending is once you do all you have to do to get it installed through the other resources, Xbox and MS Marketplace, the updates and everything you've done applies to your Steam installation. Forgive me for not updating my post when I tested the Steam installed launcher.
I haven't and probably won't ever login to MS Marketplace ever again.
...unless I have to for another game.
