After a few hours of play, I can firmly state that LoG has more atmosphere and tension around every corner than Skyrim. In addition, it challenges you most of the ride through the dungeons. LoG wants to kill you, Skyrim baby sits you. I am extremely happy to play an Old School game that actually respects you as a gamer. If I had to choose between the two games, you already know the answer.
Of course, it is a personal opinion.

Totally different genres and it's very simple to turn off Skyrim's features like quest markers etc.
This is a fantastic game in many ways, but from past experience I can't see myself getting as much time out of this.

LoG Normal is harder than Skyrim on Master. It's pretty sad.
That's much of the reason I quit playing Skyrim way early on. What's the point of continuing on once you can one-shot anything in the game? The story really isn't all that interesting. Chosen one, blah blah...
Morrowind was better than anything Bethesda is ever going to make again. It's a good thing that their games have great mod tools and mod support, or I'd probably never buy another one. Definitely looking forward to new dungeons for LoG, too, but I didn't need the promise of future content to attract me as a buyer. It's a great game as-is.

Im sorry, but I just HATE when people bring up "did you play on X" for any game.
Having to max out the difficulty does not make that game challenging, just "hard". Everything about the game stays the same its numbers just get bigger or yours cut down. I call that a cheep way to force a challenge or "hard".
A challenging game doesn't need a difficulty setting. Look a the Souls games (Dark Souls and Demon's Souls) for a good example. They are one the best series to test yourself as a gamer if you ask me (or if you're a PC only, STALKER could be used as an example) . I don't call a game a challenge unless there's a chance I wont be able to beat it, instead of just how long it will take.

You know what, I have to agree. While Skyrim is a masterclass in environment design, the story is largely forgettable and the combat is, as you point out, somewhat clunky and repetitive. I would say that in terms of pure atmosphere, Grimrock is right up there with Skyrim's best dungeons.
Also, I'm finding new depths of appreciation for the Grimrock controls and UI in general. Very simple, deceptively so, but it does everything you need without getting in the way. That and the story is pretty damn decent.
I hope the Grimrock guys do more games using their solid RPG rules system, but expanded to the scope of something like AD&D. Maybe something outdoorsy?. Grimrock takes on games like Strahd's Possession and Stone Prophet? I'd be first in line.

I like both games for different reasons. I love the difficulty of the game. I haven't played a challenging PC game in ages. Even classic francises such as Civilization are dumbed down nowadays. You know what's sad? I have a youtube channel where I am doing a let's play of this game. When I look at the demographics for my videos, over 80% of my American viewers are in the 35 - 44 age group. IT seems like the younger people aren't interested in this type of game.
Btw, here is the link to my let's play if anyone wants to check it out:

The younger gamers (for the most part) lack the attention span for an old school dungeon crawl. If they had been raised up on this type of game then maybe, but they are of the era of dumbed down console games, CoD type shooters and online MMO's.
Games like Grimrock IMO just aren't "shiny" enough for them..

Agreed. Skyrim was fun, but LoG is unforgettable.
Nostalgia definitely does play a role, but for a while now TES games have mostly been much of the same for me. The few earlier dungeon crawlers and point and click adventures that I've played, have all been something to fondly remember. Their titles I've completely forgotten though...

Older players had to cut their teeth on things like Battle Toads and worked hard for the right to beat a game. Back then it wasn't when you would beat a game, but IF you could. I miss that.
I will say that we need games that are easy to pickup and play. Without those, gaming turns into work. I LOVE a good challenge now and then, but I also need to sit back and just play.

Agree, don't think it's fair to compare both. Both are good at what their game intend to achieve. LoG is a dungeon crawler with puzzles, Skyrim is a quest base RPG. LoG's environment is limited to dungeon and it's movement is square by square while Skyrim is the normal free movement and it has much bigger area.
While one can say LoG has better tension and atmosphere around every corner of its dungeon, another can say Skyrim has a bigger world to explore and adventure in. Simply because they are different games to start with.

i got bored of skyrim pretty quickly. i'm actually annoyed with myself for buying it now as i knew it would just be oblivion in a different setting.
i really, really hate the engine they use for the elder scrolls games. i cannot stand the way the movement feels. combat is really truly dreadful as well.
as for grimrock, it is fantastic. i've only just got about half way through level3 as i've not had enough time to play it yet. i'm doing it on hard mode with no map. i'm doing the map myself on the graph paper and it is really great fun.
i really recommend trying to do the mapping yourself - it adds a lot to the game and gives you a real sense of achievement. maybe it is just me, but putting little letters on the map and having a key to tell you what they are is really enjoyable.
skyrim is for dummies, grimrock is not, maybe that is the short answer?

GrimRock is a descendent from when games were games, not watered down garbage for the masses of braindead console kiddies.

Have you tated the differnace between an orange and an apple.. WOW and XXX is so much better.
they are both RPG's and that about it.. one is past (and great), and one is the future, and also great.. but as said, 100^ different.

I am a fairly young gamer (won't say age to avoid hate) but I love games with a challenge and ones that take time. I just purchased this game and I am extremely excited to sit down and play it. Almost all of my friends fit your description and they call themselves hardcore gamer just because "I CAN GET A QUICKSCOPE ACROSS THE MAP AND I AM 15TH PRESTIGE!!! DERPA DERP!" Gaming has been brought down by gamers like this in my opinion. I am excited for Dark Souls to be coming to PC but I wish Demon Souls would come as well, because my PS3 copy is just going to sit in the corner while I use my PC.
You are right people tend to hate on games just because they don't look good enough, or they say games that looks like garbage (Skyrim) look amazing. Graphics are not what made a game, it is not what made people play Pacman and Asteroids now was it?
I agree entirely with your post, and I hope games like this do well in the industry.
PS. Grimrock vs. Skyrim
Skyrim was a massive disappointing for me and I thought it was rather poorly done to be honest. Grimrock is a far better game.

I'd definitely enjoying the old-school gaming goodness that is Legend Of Grimrock. :)
I remember Dungeon Master back in the day, so nostalgia adds another big boost. I am very pleased with the modern graphics and animation of the enemies etc. Nice special effects.
We even have critter meat/chunks we pick up from what we kill for eating...raw (large snail?). Picking up rocks and using them as weapons and tools sure bring back memories! :D
I have never played Skyrim although I have a few friends that do. I'll have to mention LoG to them and see what they think. ;) It's always nice to introduce a new generation to remakes of the classics.

I truly hate comments like this. The sheer arrogance, and the supposed superiority just because you think of yourself as an "old school gamer".
First off, how can they have a short attention span AND be dumbed down? Either its too complex in order to sate those with little attention span, or its dumb for stupid people. It isnt both.
And whats admirable in playing a game from a long time ago for an obscene amount of time? First game I played was Digger T-Rock, and it was tough.
And news flash, anything that pits you against other humans is always going to be much harder than a computer can ever be. Game AI is not even close to matching all the angles a human mind can take.
So stop with the crap that because you are old and still willing to play games from 20 years ago, some how you have a great wisdom about gamers.

Sandbox-ish vs. Old school dungeon crawler. Yup I can see a reason to compare these titles!
I think the IQ of the average gamer has dropped into the negative since being a "gamer" became more mainstream.....

I have not played Skyrim but earlier games from that series I have played and I have never liked them so much. I am more about fan of Neverwinter Nights series or games like Lasersquad. First RPG games what I played were Dungeon Masters I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3UdUWU4j1Y) and II and I must say that they came close to my heart in the feeling of dungeons. And then other RPG games like Warriors of the Eternal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix487_MNqvo) what offered Dungeon Master style dungeons and caves.
And now when I saw Legend of Grimrock, I just needed to get it as it is so awesome to have simple gameplay but with deep tactical fights (try to play with 3 enemies in 3x3 grid without getting cornered or blocked) and chases trough tunnels while backing trough them by memory while fighting with enemy same time.
And it is just awesome to hunt those secret objects and secret levelers.
I don't know about how easy this game is in easy mode, as I toke the medium (or was it hard?) level and it gives enough challenge.
And for long time I got scared in video game just by falling trough floor or worried when the dungeons started to shake.
I would say that this game is great tribute to Dungeons Master games (and even that it borrowed the tunnels from Ultima 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFUqtFORKsk), it made dungeons even better with realtime gameplay and physics) and I would argue it is "a must" to be owned by any serious RPG player :D

I have also been known to 'toke the medium' on occasion :p

Do your Old School games normally insult you as you play?
On similarities between the two; I find it difficult to hum the main theme for Grimrock without ending up humming the Elder Scrolls theme...
Oh yeah, and both games have dungeons. and swords.
Have I missed anything? No? cool, well that's this thread finished then. You're Welcome.
EDIT: toke the medium. heheheh.

Mate, you own Farcry 2 and Gotham City Imposters. I reckon Bethesda should have charged you twice ;)
Disclaimer- I also own Farcry 2, but I'm not proud of it. I also own Saints Row 2, because sometimes I just like to wipe my ♥♥♥ with some money.
