I'm curious about this game, and I'm disappointed that there hasn't been much said about it here. I enjoy fantasy/role-playing/strategy games, but I'm hesitant to drop $39.99 on it. I bought KoA:R when it first came out, and I've regretted that purchase ever since. It was fun at first, but became quite boring and repetitive too quickly. I don't even want to finish it! I ended up putting close to 40 hours into it because I wanted to feel like I wisely spent my money.

So, anyone have any thoughts? Reviews?

I've written pretty extensively about it in this forum, but to sum up I'd give it a solid 78... just misses being a B effort due to some menu clumsiness, unrefined pvp, and occasional pathing difficulties. You've got to be into tactics games, though.

Well, my interest was mostly killed by the activation limit, which I feel is nonsensical for a Steam game. Before I'd consider buying, I'd want the reassurance that this will eventually be patched out.

Yikes, there is activation limit.
It's not like we play this game forever.
2012 and they think activation limit boost sale.

That is an excellent question. People said you had better like tactics games, but in reviews it looks like it plays similar to Dragon Age Origins. Which sounds awesome to me. I watched a gamespot review that gave it a six which means it's not a bad game, but no good. In the middle.

I see this thread got hijacked by the whole activation limit thing. Too bad, I was hoping to find some real information here. Not that Spattercat failed to disappoint in that area.

How is the story in this game? I don't care about activation limits and the such, but give me a good story and decent gameplay and I'm happy.

I didn't find the story very compelling, to the point where I haven't picked it up for awhile. I'd like to go back to it, because it does have a lot of merit, but the story in the outset was pretty standard. It's based on the boardgame, and apparently has a lot of lore, so you could probably get a good idea of the story/setting from reading up on that.

i wouldn't say the fighting is very similar. In dragon age you didn't really have to use your skills all that wisely in most fights and if they were difficult it was generally because you were fighting far greater numbers of enemies. In this 3v3 or even 4v3 fights have to be taken seriously. Also you can't just use all your skills as soon as their countdown is over. The amount of stamina/mana/faith points each use is generally very high so you have to choose 2 or 3 per fight to use (unless the fight goes long and your points replenish)The use of buffs/control/debuffs is vital which also can't really be said of many other games. The inability to quaff potions when things are going badly also makes fights far less forgiving. It's probably the most difficult fighting I've come across in a rpg since the Pool of radiance remake.

I got banned from gamespot for some constructive criticism of their review. It probably is the worst review I've ever read. The person complained about no loot making the game boring but that clearly is just her opinion (a person who looking at her previous reviews had never reviewed a rpg before). Each character has specific weapons and skills and I don't see that it would make sense to be wandering around and for example find a great sword of awesomeness +10 (or have it fall out a dragons belly) and the likes and then have to decide which character to give it to. The Witcher also didn't have you finding axes, spears, bows etc because The Witcher used swords and no one complained about that!

She also hinted that choosing which characters to use in your party was the only strategic decision you make. In fact deciding which skills, attributes, weapons and armor to upgrade and in the case of weapons and armor in which way, also plays an important part. The same character might play very differently in your game to mine, depending on how you've done things.

This being said I still think the game is a bit overpriced considering the specials you can get on steam. The graphics aren't great. Battles can be a bit tough to follow at times when the units bunch together. The pathfinding and targetting issues have been mentioned in every review so no need to do so again.

They've also made the codex outside of the main game so you can't look up what skills enemies have during the missions. Seems a bizarre choice seen as how important it is to know what to expect. It would also be useful if some text came up when an opponent used a skill. It's pretty silly to have to pause and look through enemy characters every few seconds to see if any have given themselves buffs...you also then wouldn't have to do the same to see which debuffs your characters have been hit with. At the moment you can just see instantaneously that they have got something affecting them- with a different colored circle for buffs, debuffs, control.

I thing 6.5/10 for the game might be harsh but not sure I'd go as high as 7/10...not without a decent multiplayer.

Wow, 50% off in less than a month. How much this game must suck?

Needs a demo.

Being discounted soon after release isn't a sign that a game did poorly, FYI.

Maybe not, but it definitely raises some questions as to why it is discounted so soon.

You never see a successful game lop 50% off the price in a month after release either.

Maybe it's a decent game that just got no publicity which resulted in poor sales and this is a way to get back some of the costs.

My guess is it did in fact sell poorly.

I agree with it needing a demo however.

Seven weeks two days actually, but it's still fast to discount so heavily.

Rage went on sale *very* soon after its initial release.

(Though that had to do with 2005 YU55.)

Haha I am watching this video, I do feel bad for the guy.

I like it in the beginning when he sees "I should point out that I knew about about Confrontation before doing this....I don't know why I am doing this...."

Burn this game with fire!

I swear the game has already been on the daily deal at least 2 times before this it seems. I remember seeing it on sale on steam beforehand.
