Hello gang, thought we should start posting screenshots of our flights here in one place because I'm sure we got some really neat ones around Hawaii.

Since the forums (and the FB page) are so filled with hate right now, I thought of posting something a tad more positive. I do not want this thread to devolve into bashing so leave if you're going to do that please.

P.S. I prefer taking screenshots outside of the plane. That doesn't mean I never fly in a cockpit :P

MY SCREENSHOTS

That's a lot of buildings. Honestly, MS Flight's representation of Honolulu is huge. It makes Test Drive Unlimited 2's Honolulu look like a village. That game's awesome too by the way.

Or d) it's a pain in the rumpus trying to paste screenshots one by one into some graphics program. (I thought we were supposed to have a screen-print capability within the game?)

Um, I guess you're not aware that Steam already has an ingame screenshot function. You can change the button in the Steam options.

This works for non-Steam games you add as well.

227hrs and counting :)
the new F40 is a nice ride too.
my steam name is the same as my forum name, feel free to look a tdu2/flight brother up :)

edit: for anyone using steam for screen shots,
you'll need to reset either the F12 "top down" view in flight, or, as i did - remap your screenshot key to something else.
by default, pressing F12 in flight for a steam screenshot will change view to top down AND take screen shot at the same time, giving only top down pics :(

For those of us without Steam (such as the originals who bought Flight thru Games for Windows Marketplace) the only option it seems is to do a [prt scrn] and paste it into something else.

Or, do as I've done for the past fifteen years. Install a tiny TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) screenshot utility program. I've used Grabber2k.exe because it really is "tiny." It takes just under 2k of system memory.

It is easily configured from the system tray for many file types, although I use .jpg since I won't have to convert from Flight's default .bmp format. It will take full-screen, multi-screen, or rubber-band selection screenshots.

It may be configured to use any key-combination desired. I use the default PrintScreen key since that's what it's for!

It will automatically save all files either as a date/time filename, or an incremented suffix filename, such as SR22T_01.jpg, SR22T_02.jpg, etc.

My mistake then. I just assumed everyone was playing it on Steam since this is the Steam forums. You could also get FRAPS (or some other screenshot taking program) and take screenshots ingame with that (default is F10 but you can change it). Easier than pressing Prt Scrn and pasting it into a paint program.

Someone said Press V though. Does that mean Flight actually does have an ingame screenshot function?

Yes, Flight has a built in screenshot facility, but unfortunately saves only as a .bmp file.

Why is that unfortunate? Would you prefer a lossy .jpg? If so, conversion is trivial.

I appreciate them using a non-lossy image format, since I often do something to the image before using it for anything.

Not that it really matters, for a game screenshot, though.

It's not bad but if you want to upload them online, .BMPs aren't ideal since they have big filesizes and not everyone has the means to convert them to .JPG or something more manageable.

Here's more P-40 fun:

There are lots of conversion programs out on the web that you can download for free, but there is no need for them just to do a conversion: You can open the BMPs files in Paint or Windows Picture & Fax viewer, then save them as JPGs.

Well yes but you know, some people who can't be bothered to DL programs, even if they're free. I remember someone in a forum who wanted to unzip a .RAR file. He had never seen a RAR before and absolutely refused to DL a free RAR unzipper.

Forgot that Windows Picture does that though but then you may get people who are too lazy to open it up to convert an image.

RoboRay

Honestly, if somebody can't be troubled to open the file in Windows Paint and press "Save As..." they're probably not going to make the effort to upload it anywhere then link it, either.

It's "unfortunate" only in the sense that you have no choice. Grabber2k will allow me to choose among many formats, including the lossless, uncompressed .bmp format. I like having options! ;)

RoboRay
04-30-2012, 11:08 AM
Oh, sure! Options are always preferred.

However, that is a 3rd-party utility you're using to get those options. I'm not aware of any games that allow you to select the output format for the built-in screenshot function. Most of them use JPG but, MS being MS, you know they're always going to default to BMP on any software they publish.

When you install flight, no matter where you got it from it will place a file in your Picture Folder titled Flight.

to take a Screen Shot the default keyboard "key" is V.

after your done flying for that session, you can go to your Picture folder on your computer and look in it and find a sub-folder titled Flight which the screen shots that you have taking will be in the BMP format and will need to be converted to a JPEG in some cases to use.

I make a sub-folder by the date of my session(s) which I just drag all the new ones in to there own folder for that day, in those session folders I keep the BPM file in a folder separate from the ones I converted with infranview to a Jpeg for posting.

(Weather) patterns. When they say "storm cells", they mean it.

If you don't know what an airport traffic pattern is, consider reading this Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airfield_traffic_pattern). It'll explain you some of the terms used below.

On base leg at Upolu. Quite a bit too wide, too... (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359661480960/4D219F6B43EA33C9ABC12CE4577C9FB079CAA314/)
... but not something you can't compensate for on final... (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359661467943/B45EFA505C09DF56B1614B7CB0B2A6CFD32B2262/)
... and with 25 knots of headwind, the touchdown is really gentle. (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359661437017/B2C28B91AD85D3C96643ED94CABA032F28412874/)

Another run, downwind leg... (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665919998/083858E09DE29032BCE114F8AE6E64D66C2A8F14/)
... and this time the wind drift is accounted for, and the distances look better... (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665915743/79977CC1EE06C59C7390D05AAD537422418BDB21/)
... and so the turn to final looks as good as I could wish. Or make it :) (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665912175/FE902B69C0D451B2779E102B8350929C74263F4D/)

And then, it's time for lunch:

Approaching Waimea-Kohala. The weatherman says the wind is ca. 25 knots from 70-80 degrees. This is going to be fun. (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665660569/86B79E23C5B9D43FC95F6B5FD7D38B8376828DF8/)
We're coming from west and we'll be landing on runway 04, so we join the pattern on the upwind leg, at the altitude of about 3600 feet. (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665673042/4975000C04EB53874091344B75D3919D1C341C40/)
The runway looks good, there's no traffic, so we can turn to the crosswind leg. (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665687011/DF36D0784C326E5F1D69B8CF3CD7BDC2EE878680/)
The problem is - if you forget about the wind, your downwind leg will be waaay too far from the runway :) (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665804126/44FB1A62A9B5AAEDAD78B6BC3377AEC500204C81/)
And you'll have to cope with it on the base leg. (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665820142/5F7E08BBBB878A4EDF4C1A38440869F063787D47/)
And then cope with it some more - compensating for the wind drift this time. (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596970359665826991/44D97DAFC1EC112A2C61FBAECBF8A5A626E66240/)

OMG! - Flying around under floating trees & houses in a valley near SE coast of Oahu. Double LOL. Totally weird when I tried flying up through them and crashed...hahaha. Any one else seen this sort of thing?

Nice shot through open canopy of RV6 leading edge Micro Vortex Generators that help reduce stall speed. Yes, I know the graphics is not so good - my PC is only mid range performance with most settings on MEDIUM

Another RV6 open canopy shot - sure raises the windrush volume at 150knots - haha - good for dumping excess height in conjunction with massive sideslipping on tight approaches....!

I worked out of that hangar from '92 to '97.

It's still got the rainbow painted on it, but the old P-3 ramp and hangar area is now a Hawaii National Guard tactical vehicle parking area.

My best friend's dad worked there in the mid-80's. He sent me a picture of that hangar and told me to go find it. It was the most fun "aerocache" I've done yet.

Last Wednesday's challenge (http://youtu.be/a8TaRxpquxI) wasn't all that difficult. Or... you guys did mean 'across the outline', didn't you? :)

It's a helicopter assault ship -- so where's the helicopter for it? ;)

It was a new Van's autogyro. You just don't see the rotor from the inside :>

LOL.

I was doing some emergency RV6 "engine fail after takoff" type outlandings and decided to try ditching offshore. After successfully stalling into the drink at about 40kts without flipping, the plane sank without a trace, leaving me to run across water to land.. JESUS LIVES! lol...

Thereupon I spied this cool landscape with awe-inspiring physics, leading me to ponder "Wot planet is this?"

And an Alaskan Panorama I made up using Paint.Net.I just adjusted the lighting and colours a bit but it was only possible because of the great scenery from the Flight team. -

Thanks crusader58. You see lots of amazing sights just from flying around.

Great shots, aussiejeff! Love those Dawn/Dusk effects myself!

None of my non-Flight friends (they don't care for this genre) want to see Alaska in anything but winter. I love the snow too since Hawaii doesn't have the stuff, but I think Alaska scenery looks great in all seasons.
