Hello
I'm looking for a review of the ST1000DM005 Seagate spinpoint 1tb hdd.
This is the Seagate version of the Samsung F3.

Having just RMA'd my Samsung F3 I'm getting the Seagate version back.

The only info I can find is:

http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=Seagate+ST1000DM005+HD103SJ

I tried searching google but it kept coming back with the Samsung version, the only results for searching by ST1000DM005 are items for sale.

They should essentially be the same as Seagate owns Samsung now, but since you'll be getting one maybe you could do a small review of it.

Yeah this is the problem, all reviews point to the Samsung HD103 drive.

I hope Seagate haven't ruined this line of drive.

I must add I'm impressed with the Seagate RMA process.
I raised the RMA on Monday (a bank holiday).
Posted the drive out Wednesday.
Got an email Thursday saying they had got it and a 'replacement' is on it's way from The Netherlands.

I will post some speeds and other thoughts up once I've received it.

Slightly off topic but I've just RMA'd my first drive, a 2TB WD Green. I sent them a screen shot of the 'caution' from crystal disk info and was given the option of logging my credit card details with them and having a new drive shipped to me, giving me 30 days to return my faulty drive.
It's still working and over half full, so I can just copy everything over before sending it to them. They won't take any money from my card unless they don't get my drive back within the 30 days.
Easier for me as i don't have a box and packing to send my drive in (I can just re-use whatever they send the new drive in) and don't have to cram data onto my remaining drives :D
Interested to know how your Seagate drive performs as I'm thinking of getting the 2TB version to replace the WD.

I'm also interested on your feedback, especially regarding the warranty. I think as all Seagate mainstream models it's only one year but if you're lucky and grab a drive manufactured before 2012 it should be three years like the previous Samsung (definitely a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned).

On a side note there's also the ST2000DL004 which is a clone of the Samsung F4 ecogreen HD204UI, spec wise I don't think they changed a thing, but you'll probably confirm it with this rebadged F3.

Well the drive finally arrived. Silly me got it delivered to work, forgetting I had a couple of days holiday booked off.

The drive is labelled as a ST1000DM005 and as a HD103S and has Seagate and Samsung on it. At this point I'm not sure what I've got as a replacement for my poorly Samsung F3, will have to wait until I get some cables in it.

Seagate know how to pack drive:

Sad thing is it's 'Certified factory repaired' and not a spanking new one. Oh well, I'll bed it in and see how we go.

On the upside I checked the warranty and it expires July 2014 which is about the same as what was left on my broken drive, longer than the 90 days I was expecting.

More to follow once I get it home and wired up.

It was probably a return that had nothing wrong with it in the first place they may have just updated the rom..
Or if the controller was screwed the may have replaced that, there would not have been any internal problems with the drive.

Yeah I didn't think they could do much with platter damage.

BIOS confirms it's a rebadged F3 HD103SJ.
Whisper quiet.
Formatting now.

Will hdtune it later see how much bad sectors were effecting performance on the old drive as access times were through the roof.

@ TeKraken, you mentioned that the warranty is longer than you expected. I've just got back my WD Green drive and before i sent it in, the warranty was to 2014. Now, when i go to register the product on the WD page, it's only 112 days

Is this something you've come across before? Doesn't seem fair to me :(

I was expecting about 90 days minimum... but I'm just looking for where I read it.

It's not something I've done much, in the past they (all brands) have run for years and I've only upgraded for capacity reason.

I would contact support and ask them, it may be easy for them to extend it to the original length as they have the S/N on the system somewhere... don't ask dont get.

Cheers! I've dropped them an Email and I'll post back with whatever reply I get. If they don't extend the warranty to the original length, I won't be buying another WD drive and will probably sell this one and get a new Seagate model.

No one extends warranty's you get what was left from the original purchase date, they would go broke if the gave u a new drive with full warrant every time..

But Doc didn't get that much on his replacement drive.
Original was 2014 = 2 years. His replacement only has 112 days.

Yes that is odd

Hopefully they can just compare both serial numbers on the RMA and adjust the replacement drives warranty date.

I would be pestering them about it if they refused to do it on the first email.

Yes that is odd

Glad you think so too! I was fearing that this might be the normal way of things with replacement drives as I haven't had to send one in before now!

Edit to add, Cheers TeKraken, I'll certainly pester them if they don't adjust it after the first Email ;)

Yeah that's not rite at all may need proof of purchase so if you have it send a copy with the e-mail

I'm glad I have the older Samsung ones. The newer Seagate versions only have 1 yr warranty.

Just a quick update on WD's warranty services for anyone interested or worried like I was!

With a drive that's an 'advance replacement', they routinely ship those with a 90 day warranty. Then when they get the drive you send back in, they verify it's suitable for replacement and then update the drive they sent you with whatever warranty was left on your old drive. Meaning that when they've got my old drive back and processed it, I'll get the remaining warranty on the replacement updated to expire in 2014 :D

2 platters of 500Go vs if I assume correctly it's the new Seagate 7200.14 and its only platter of 1To. Well, too bad that Seagate offers only 1 year on it, definitely no buy even with a great price, it's like buying a disposable device. It's a shame when a lot of ssd's offer 5 years, sign at least of something durable and as their name "solid".

Let's hope WD will offer soon something similar like the 7K1000D or since they own them rebadged it.
