View Full Version : My thoughts on SFxT PC since pre-console release

HI everyone, if my username looks familiar, I post on SRK forums too. I picked this up to play with my other PC buds that don't have consoles and etc.

First and foremost, I noticed this is the pre-patched version. Which means there are sound skip issues due to Capcom overtuning the latency for online smoothness via the GGPOesque netcode. It uses a roll back system. This is not the same as SF4/Super SF4: AE2012.

A brief explanation on what GGPO is:
What is it?
GGPO is a networking library that game developers can use to add networked gameplay support to arcade style games. GGPO's latency hiding techniques give each player a gameplay experience that is nearly indistinguishable from playing with their friends locally, even against players around the world.
How does it work?
GGPO uses a peer-to-peer topology to run a complete copy of your game for each player, transmitting controller inputs over the network to keep these copies in sync. Each player's inputs are sent to their copy of the game without having to wait for their opponent's to arrive over the network.

If the simulations diverge, GGPO rolls back to the most recent accurate state, corrects the mistake, and jumps back to the current frame, all before the player can notice. This provides the illusion of lag-free gameplay.

SFxT doesn't use a direct carbon copy of it, but the techniques are very similar. If you experience teleports in game play, the connection peer to peer is simply too laggy. The equivalent of this experience in AE would be SLOW DOWNS. You get teleports in this version because the game and the netcode is trying to "catch up" both peers so it skips frames.

So yeah, the gems are default. I have a small discussion on gem optimization here which may interest you: http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/gem-synergy-optimization.160205/

There is another discussion on standing resets started by Ultradavid on SRK: http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/sfxt-standing-resets.159920/

A brief break from what you should expect here compared to AE...

The timer is the same duration as SF4/AE2012, but you have two health bars to possibly run through.

The flow of combos in this game are usually your own character's 300-400 damage esque BnB's solo or you can tag and deal that much.

Most combos utilizing one meter should net you around 450ish or so damage via tag cancel.

If your character doesn't have natural chains, light to medium chains are good to keep pressure and build meter. 98% of these are tight strings, but you are at a slight disadvantage yet unpunishable for probably 90% of the characters on the roster.

Don't be a hero--watch your health bar and tag out. Raw tags usually mean you can and will get punished, so it's like trading health away to tag out. Rather than doing that, find your team's safe tag cancel by burning a stock of meter instead of trading health.

I have a Youtube for my replays and I have started doing voiced commentary along with them. I think it is more helpful than staring at replays going back and forth without supplement information.

A lot of people have mixed reviews of the game because they have only SF4 or AE to compare to since they are aesthetically similar. I've grinded quite some time with the game so I have a fair of idea that I "get it" with SFxT.

Ask me anything.

Yeah, that's possible. I just need to get back into the grind.

Great to have a fellow console player on the PC. I guess that means PC fighting community can exist and grow.

I too have the PS3 version since release and have been closely following this game. Frankly, I plan to make the PC version my main platform and hope to have it patched ASAP.
