What is up with the game not automatically changing characters when you die? Kinda sucks that if you don't have time to change characters then die you lose the round even though your second character is on full health.

Thats how the game was designed, so that ppl will learn how to tag out when they are in danger.

This game is unlike UMvC3 or KOF where your next fighter takes over.

Them's the break. Here's a few tips.

1. Learn to Tag Cancel mid-combo when your point character is low on life (Pressing MP+MK when you've hit the opponent). When you tag cancel certain moves on hit, you can fluidly bring in your teammate to not only finish the combo for good damage, but your character leaving play can now recharge red life.

2. Raw Tag only as a last resort. Raw Tags are almost always punishable on reaction with a big fat combo. If you HAVE to tag out, then get far enough away that they can't stuff the tag-out animation in startup (Stopping you from tagging out) and eat the opening you've given to your opponent.

3. Work in "Cross Rush" into your combo when you've hit the opponent. You can do this by chaining normals together (Example: LP > MP > HP > HP) or connecting with any normal and hitting HP+HK together as the first normal connects to do a manual Cross Rush. Chaining into it is perfectly fine, but don't throw out the Cross Rush if you know it's not going to connect, as all Cross Rushes are unsafe on block.

4. Cross Assault (QCB+MK+MP). This evens out your teammate's life, and despite the CPU controlling your extra character on-screen, the opponent is usually locked down regardless, making it a good option if you have the 3 bars to spare.

If you work these concepts into your game, you won't lose your first character right away. You'll also recover a lot more life, as you can recover a percentage of life lost when a character is tagged out.
