View Full Version : Should I buy this game?

I love space/science-fiction games, but I tend to lose interest in games that are full of depth in terms of gameplay mechanics. I know that's appealing to some people, but I like to explore the depth of a game through simpler game mechanics (Like Civilization or Spore) and then lore is always a good touch (Dark Souls style, if you played the game then believe it or not the basic mechanics are still pretty simple.)
Basically, is this game insanely complicated with incredibly deep game mechanics? Or does it contain a lot of features based around a moderate array of game mechanics?

I would say that it has low to moderate depth at this point. But remember that this is an alpha so some things are likely to change along the path to release. It's kind of about the level of Civilization or so, lighter in some ways (depending on which version of Civ you are talking about), denser in others, but still fairly streamlined. I don't know if you will like it or not (I currently have mixed feelings, but it has been growing on me the more I play it).
When you preorder a game, whether it's from a relatively unknown company like this one, or even a more known company with a proven track record, there's always a risk. It won't help me, since I already purchased the game, but maybe there will be a playable demo at some point that can help you decide. I will say that the alpha, for what it's worth, shows a whole lot of promise. My guess is that by the release date, it can be a really fun and cool game. If it were released as-is, I would say it's 'ok' but wouldn't recommend it over any of a few other 4-X space games. But it's still in alpha, so there's some ways to go.

The preorder bonuses and videos have me sold, I'm just afraid I might pay for it and not have enough patience to enjoy it as much as it deserves. Can you compare the depth to Sins of a Solar Empire? I played that long ago and remember not getting too absorbed into it due to growing impatient with it.

It's significantly deeper than Sins (or Civ5). Many more resources, techs, and ways to fine tune everything from your ship builds to system management. If it helps though, the smooth UI and informative tutorial pop-ups make it pretty easy to learn. It is undeniably a very complex game though, as are most games in the 4x genre. Sins and Civ5 are exceptions, Sins is a fast paced RTS hybrid, and Civ5 has been mainstreamed.

So it's a case of, easy to learn, hard to master?

It's perfect for you. There's just enough to do a la MoO 1. And it's all worth doing, a la MoO 1.
