So steam client update fixed that error
now it wants 1024X768 in 16 bit colour?
seriously my first fat monitor could handle 32 bit at that native and that was windows 98.
i'd think somewhere along the lines, ya'll messed up. i ain't changing this resolution every time i want to stop n start something else, or indeed just alt to desktop and do the other random stuff i do.
so, i'd summise there some sort of overide for it wanting so desperately to be at an archaic resolution. even dosbox fullscreen doesn't mind what your resolution is. wide, thin, short, tall, ANY BIT DEPTH. come on people, its 2012 this shouldn't be difficult if nothing else WINDOWED MODE in a config file? ya know the general coding of such a thing being FULLSCREEN = 0 or 1 OFF or ON.

What do you mean by "it wants 1024X768 in 16 bit colour"?
Is it problematic that the game changes resolution when it goes full screen? If so why is this an issue. Everything should go back the way it was when the game quits or you alt tab.
Or are you getting a pop up telling you the game won't run until you change change res + color depth? This should not be happening. Some of these games are older... but not that old.
What kind of PC are you playing on: dekstop/laptop/netbook? What kind of graphic solution and what native res?

it gives the popup when trying to start the game, starting the game from the primary .exe asked for a game ID not hard to get but yeah it gives yon popup as mentioned. 1920X1020 widescreen flatscreen with HD capable. Avernus 4. seriously i dont think i seen one of these popups since being on 2000 and THAT was a while ago.

here we go word for word
Avernum 4 requires the monitor be set to exactly 16 bit colour and at least 1024X768 resolution.
You can change the resolution yourself by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting properties. Remember Avernum 4 will only work at the 16bit colour setting. Letting Avernum 4 control your monitor itself is highly recommended
seriously... what the hell is this

No idea. Wracking my brain trying to think what it might be.
Go to in game options (assuming you can) and set change resolution to "ask at start up".
If that doesn't do anything try downloading geneforge demo (which use the same engine as avernum 4) from spiderweb and see if it has the same issue. Could also try the avernum 4 demo.

If you are unable to start the game to set it to automatically set the needed resolution and bit depth then you can reset this manually by deleting the file "Avernum4Settings.dat" which can be located in your \documents\Spiderweb Software\Avernum 4 Saved Games\ folder. When you start the game with this file deleted your settings (But not saves) will be reset which should allow the game to start as normal.

A4 the error stems mainly from the games default on resolution
i changed it when it eventually lemme play to CHANGE and to get it to play origonally only requried i set it to 16bit depth on the desktop no need to fondle resolution
after that its fine at desktop default, probably changes for the game itself but thats fine.
as of writing this i just did the damaged abyss trial and now looking for the last one.
