Fun for a group of friends?

Is this game fun for a smallish group of friends to just jump into and play, or would we have to invest a lot of time to get the cool unlocks and stuff? My friends and I play Minecraft a lot together, but we're kind of tired of it, and are looking for something completely different to play together over the summer.

I say it's fun, but it does take a few days to get the unlocks. THough some people never use the later weapons so you may unlock stuff you like sooner rather than later.
