Everytime I reinstall Call of Duty 4 I've noticed that trying to start multiplayer always lead to a crash with the window "Iw3mp.exe has stopped working". I constantly have to google and it takes a while to remember the solution to this crash, so I thought I'd post it here to make it easier to remember (and hopefully help others with this same issue).
This applies to Call of Duty 4 bought via steam, on Windows 7 64-bit with a Realtek sound card. Not sure if it solves any other combination of hardware/software.
Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Sound -> Manage audio devices. Go to the "Recording" tab, and right click in the blank area in the middle. Select "Show Disabled Devices", and the device "Stereo Mix" show now show. Enable this device.
Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer should now launch correctly. Good luck!
