Quick Match and Join Session unable to connect...

Hello fellow MS Flight pilots. I have been having an issue with connecting to various people in MS Flight. This happens with one person I have on my friends list in particular and when I use the quick match feature A LOT. The exact issue is provided in the form of a screen shot below.

I get the Join Host Failed error frequently. I haven't been able to find any documentation on this issue anywhere. As far as I can tell I have all the required ports open. My friend that I currently can't connect to can connect through someone that I am able to connect to. We just can't connect to each other not even for private chat. So I am left to wonder if this an issue on the MS side or not.

There are actually a lot of reasons that would cause that error. So lets try to narrow things down:

What type of internet connection do you have? Are you on wireless, or wired? http://forums.xbox.com/gfw/forum_faq/f/250/t/3047.aspx is an awesome thread that users created on the main xbox LIVE forums.

The reason I ask is that error can be caused when your connection times out with the host of the game. This can happen because of network instability or the host simply quitting when you are trying to join.

The link to the forum didn't apply to me, I wan't having any of those issues. I have a DSL connection through AT&T. I have turned off all firewalls from my modem (it has one, oddly) to my router and within windows. I have made every program ignore Steam and MS Flight for all ports and processes. For testing purposes I have place my computer in the DMZ and will monitor my gaming experience over the next day or two. Are there any ports I should know about for forwarding?

After being in the DMZ and no anti-virus software or firewalls running I am still unable to connect to my friend and he can't connect to me.

http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-live/connecting/network-ports-used-xbox-live These are the ones the xbox requires. It might be worth trying for the pc to see if its the xbox live networking thats the issue.

Well, being in the DMZ puts me in front of all the ports. So everything hits me before it hits the router ports. So by being in the DMZ it excludes any ports that might be conflicting with the game and Live or it should.

This leads me to believe there is a threshold too low and causing the timeouts when connecting to others. I went ahead and forwarded the ports regardless. What next?

Well, being in the DMZ puts me in front of all the ports. So everything hits me before it hits the router ports. So by being in the DMZ it excludes any ports that might be conflicting with the game and Live or it should.

This leads me to believe there is a threshold too low and causing the timeouts when connecting to others. I went ahead and forwarded the ports regardless. What next?

If you are only having issues connecting to one friend in particular, have him post his network information here as well. if he has a strict NAT and you have an OPEN, you will still not always be able to connect to him. Also, use port forwarding OR DMZ, don't use them both together as that can cause further issues.

Are you/he having this issue with anyone else? Do you have the same ISP and physically near each other (same apt building/neighborhood)? One of the things with network setups is that a lot of peoples networks now have routers and gateways, each which could have their own NAT settings, which is why I was trying to get more info about your/his networks. Any chance of them posting their network setup here? Or posting in the Games for Windows - LIVE section of the xbox forums?

I'm afraid it's a lost cause. I tried walking him through port forwarding and all but he just doesn't understand. He lives roughly 1500 miles away and as for the ISP he doesn't know because he is playing at his girlfriend's house.

Bottom line is it has been an ongoing issue on both our ends. I can't connect to some people and he can't connect to some people as well. I wish there was a utility that could check this stuff and pinpoint the issue. Personally the best option is to take live completely out of the picture and allow us to join via a dedicated server or direct connection through an IP Address. Live should really only be used to confirm purchases and register the product. I give up, this has driven me to madness, literally.
