Race Engineers

So I read the newbie starting guide below and hired three race engineers, but when I go to a test run, I'm still showing the gear symbol x 0, and cannot select any of the speed up options. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Do I need to assign the engineers somewhere? I tried hiring more, but it still didn't do anything.

If you cant tell driver to speed up is because of the drivers skill not the engineers.

I appreciate the reply swedewolf, but that doesn't appear to be the issue, as I've tried with several teams and the highest rated/talented drivers available and it still won't work. I even created a pair of drivers with max stats and it still wouldn't work. It sucks because I know this game isn't great by any means, but without being able to speed the drivers up it just flat out sucks.

On one of the driver pages you can set their engineer. The game doesn't even load for me, so I can't check which.

personnel --> drivers --> assign race engineer (next to drivers photo)
