View Full Version : Voice acting?

Just recently picked up Ys Oath in Felghana and gotta say, one of the most fun RPGs I've played in a rather long while although one minor complaint I have is the lack of voice acting.

I have heard that this game had Japanese voice-overs and was wondering if there's any particular reason they weren't kept. A lot of the emotional scenes could have benefited a lot from them imo.

Also, is there a possibility of future Ys localisations having the original Japanese voice (if there is any)?

Finally, thanks Xseed for bringing us English speakers these great games :D

The PC versions (the ones present on Steam) never had voice acting.

Yeah, the voice-overs were added for the PSP port in 2010. The PC game you played was originally released in 2005, and never contained any voice-acting at all -- and for a variety of reasons, we found it impossible to reinsert the existing acting into the PC version for its Steam release.

Sorry!

As for future titles retaining Japanese voice-acting, that's something that has to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Most companies (ourselves included) generally try to keep the original Japanese AND offer an English dub in every game we release... but for one reason or another (licensing, platform-holder policies, prohibitive cost, etc.), we're often forced to stick with one or the other.

I see. Thanks for the clarification.

I just finished Ys Origin with Yunica on hard and have to say, that was a total blast. Some really good old school fun with surprisingly decent story/dialogue.

On a sidenote, why is Yunica's fire magic > Adol's? She doesn't know how to use magic but gets a blasting death phoenix of doom while Adol get's a crappy fireball. That phoenix woulda saved me some hair pulling on some of the 'weak to fire' bosses in Oath D:

This is the one thing that's keeping me from buying the game.

Having played through YS 1, most of 2 before it corrupted the game files, 3 on the SNES and a remake of the original for PC I'm fed up of having to deal with trying to get it to run and then having content missing.

In future plan for a PC release from the start and grow the fanbase through steam.

Once again, no content is actually missing here. This is the entire original 2005 release of the game -- with *added* content, no less! The only things "missing" from it are things that were added specifically for the PSP version that was released 5 years later. And those things aren't especially backwards-compatible with the original release (nor are we the original programmers, nor are the original programmers even available anymore, so adapting the PSP content is pretty much out of the question!).

This is the complete Felghana experience. Many people even prefer it to the PSP version (I'd even go so far as to say *most* seem to prefer it!). You're definitely not missing anything if you play it, and I really don't think you'd have any trouble getting it to run (especially being a game from 2005).
